PDF Editor FAQ

How do you stimulate curiosity and creativity in adult people who are set in their ways?

Good question. Often when I see clients with a mental illness I ask about their hobbies as it's also a question on my intake form. They usually tell me about what they used to do creatively but have lost the motivation and drive to continue. I tend to see as the client's mood improves and they have more access to their Adult ego state, the Child ego state is less pressured by the Parent ego state and the client starts to pick up hobbies and interests in music, writing, drawing and photography for example.

What has the keto diet taught you?

I did keto a while ago. The concept intrigued me, and I wanted to see exactly how it would feel. After all, I had clients on keto, and I kinda wanted to at least experience it for myself.First few days were fine — actually I dropped quite a bit of water, and appeared more defined. I probably lost 3kg in 3 days. Strength was fine. Work capacity was fine. Sleep was fine.Fine, fine, fine. After about a week of training, I started to run into some difficulties. I became weaker. Weights that I used to be able to do for multiple sets of 8–12 reps I would fail the first set at 6–7 ugly reps. This wasn’t just one lift, it was across the board. I felt lethargic. I would wake up in the morning in a haze, and pass out at night in a daze; in between often I had trouble focusing and remembering. My work suffered.Still, it was an experiment, and I was not going to drop out of my own study.A sample size of one is small, but a sample size of zero is infinitely less useful!Week two really sucked. But…I got through it. I felt small, flat, weak, tired, crappy, irritable…but then…all of a sudden…I felt fine. Then, I started to feel great. My sleep was better. My strength started to come back, though I couldn’t do as much volume as before, I would “bonk”. My muscles filled out slightly, and looked more vascular. Zero hunger. Ever. I had to force food down sometimes. I could go all day without food, and just never think about it. I sometimes had an empty, hollow feeling, like there was a void that should be filled with a meal, but I was never really hungry. I was more productive than usual.Still, I missed carbs. Not really physically. But mentally, a bit.And socially…a lot.Chinese have rice at just about every meal, you see.At a minimum, lunch and dinner, with a bubble tea in between. And most other foods are fairly carb-heavy.It’s possible to do keto in China, but not if you are doing it in Chinese culture, with Chinese people, in the Chinese environment. Refusing a bowl of rice would get you a smack from your mother-in-law.This is part of the reason why the Chinese adult diabetes rate is 13% and rising—they typically have a very high carbohydrate diet, and find those “going low carb” to be absolutely bonkers.“in Asia, starchy foods represent the main source of dietary energy. According to the Chinese Nutritional Guidelines, carbohydrates should contribute 55–65% of the daily energy intake”Almost two thirds! This might be due to tradition, as well as the innate challenges in feeding a billion+ people. Rice is cheap to grow, per calorie. It’s basically established wisdom that carbs are needed, and good. I’ve had it said to me many, many times from locals that a good “weight loss strategy” is only eating white rice and avoiding meat!“Additionally, in prospective cohort studies, high carbohydrate diets were associated with increased incidence of stroke and diabetes in Chinese individuals, but not in Caucasian or American subjects.”While I don’t think keto is the answer, perhaps it’s worth taking a fresh look at lowering carb intake, particularly in populations that seem at risk, however large they are.As for me, I slipped out of keto gradually, and am back to eating plenty of carbs. I don’t feel less healthy, don’t miss it, and won’t try it again, but I am glad that I did it and encourage most people to try it, if only to normalize their relationship with carbs and show you that they are in no way needed for a healthy and happy life.Check out my Space, follow me on Instagram for daily diet and training tips! How could a therapist work with a client who had significant prior trauma caused by well-intentioned mental health treatment? How could they prove they were safe when the prior therapists also believed they were acting in the client's best interests?

You cannot and will never be able to for many clients.Therapy is so unregulated and still experimenting. I do not blame the therapist for doing a well-intentioned session fully discussed and agreed upon with the client. I am a rational person who understands that unpredictable things can happen no matter how well planned. I can get over those accidental unforeseen events and I agreed fully knowing it could go sideways (not a lot of clients have that self awareness). I take responsibility for my part in agreeing to something I believed could have helped. After a session like this…..I left and refused to come back for 2 months…..not because of the therapist …..because neither one of us knew how intense the reaction would be to the therapy. Then there are the therapists that say things like…..“Trust the girl in your process group who has broken confidentiality agreements and steals traumas she hears about and claims them as having happened to her”.i responded by asking the nurse to give the girl her newborn baby for the afternoon and let her go play down by the river….I put trust in perspective for her“What holes were penetrated during the assault”?I cried and asked why do you need to know that….he didn’t need to know that and he got talked to about asking me that question…his defense was he needed to check a box on an intake form.“We have had success with co gender and co age patients with psychiatric disorders during inpatient treatment”.This was said after I revealed I was put in at 16 into an adult psychiatric inpatient unit with adult male pedophiles that shared a door to my room….I hadn’t even told them what the one guy did to me.When patients who are already confused and damaged have to go through a bunch of professionals that further damage them, the professionals need to figure out some rules and regulations. Otherwise, how can any professionals be certain about not causing further trauma. You can be a great therapist and still hurt me accidentally. You can be a terrible therapist and hurt me with careless interrogations. You can be a terrible therapist and put me in reach of pedophiles. Therapists have a lot of power to exacerbate situations.Therapy is not the answer for me. No therapist out there can help me anymore. We could have a nice chat about life but I am not capable of trusting another therapist to “help” me.
