He eventually decided to return to complete his high school education and was on track to complete all four years in one when he was expelled again for “showing up his teachers.” He was self-taught and worked as an engineer for companies such as Magnavox and Universal Battery. Lear eventually started his own company, Radio Coil and Wire Corporation, out of the basement of his mother’s old house, which he later traded for stock in another company. He went on to invent the 8-track casette, which enjoyed great commercial success in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He founded Lear Developments, a company specializing in aerospace instruments and electronics, and developed radio direction finders, autopilots and the first fully automatic aircraft landing system, among other inventions. He went on to found the Swiss American Aviation Company and later developed the Lear Jet.Mary Carson Breckinridge (1881–1965) was an American nurse-midwife and the founder of the Frontier Nursing Service. Born to a prominant family, she was educated at home by tutors. I went through this with both my young adult offspring. They told me they were passionate about something. I nodded, smiled, encouraged them. I bought them books and videos, I offered to send them to classes, summer camps, and to buy them related equipment. Then I observed their behavior. While they talked the talk, they did not walk the walk. Their childhood fantasy was just that--fantasy. They were searching their identity and trying to figure out where they would fit in. They were not nearly as passionate about their dreams as they thought. How did I know? Because they didn't put time or effort into it. They did not do any work toward a goal. And why should they? There is so much to learn and discover when you are young, and you should be keeping an open mind to possibilities.It doesn't sound you are very keen on the idea of a business career. Don't do it. Take it from me. If you are not into it, it will be hell. Keep an open mind about other fields. Money isn't everything. I love being a father and a husband, and I scrape by. And I am ridiculously happy and poor.While you are not bettering yourself in STEM, have you been doing well or showing an interests in other areas? Are you into socializing? Music? Hiking? Gaming? Recreation? Sports? Travel? Cars? Motorcycles? BMX? Snowboarding? Sailing? Skateboarding? Party planning? Writing? Being a good friend? Being a good listener? Caring for a pet?You have been developing in other ways, not the cookie cutter ways that schools and some parents encourage you in. Give yourself some credit for surviving as a teenager. It is a challenge to find yourself, and I can guarantee, you have a long road ahead of you in discovering who you are and what you are meant to do, if you are like most people. And all of the things you have learned so far will serve you at some time in your life.For instance, my brother-in-law has been a TV, movie, game and popular culture fanatic. Totally useless knowledge, right? When he went to college he tried nursing, journalism and a few other things until he dropped out and went to community college to get his act together. Then, he returned to his college and discovered digital media as a major. He learned game programming, sound engineering, film making, and is now in Los Angeles working in sound production and Foley artist. His encyclopedic knowledge of B-movies, obscure trivia, film casts, names and dates has served him well when he is introduced to some lesser known actor or technical artist at work. He quickly establishes himself as an ally because he knows interesting and little know aspects of their career. He also remembers tiny details about lighting and sound effects and music in films and that knowledge informs his technical work. The gaming and watching TV and pirating movies is paying off for him.My wife changed her major three times. I changed mine once, but didn't finish my final semester for 23 years when I finally got my degree--and I no longer have an interest in pursuing a career in the field I majored in!Why must you be a scientist or technologist to pursue your fascination with planes, space, tech and science? You have blinders on. Take a look at the NASA website or any technology company or any university with an aerospace program or aerospace museum. They hire artists, writers, educators, curators, model builders, craftsmen, photographers, film makers, videographers, web designers, software instructors, etc. Do you realize how many people work in these organizations? They hire in every administrative occupation that a corporation or university hires.You can be a part of the field without being an astronaut, engineer, programmer, or scientist. You could learn to be a mechanic and work on airplane engines. You could take flying lessons and become an amateur pilot. You could build and fly model rockets, airplanes and drones without much technical knowledge. If you are really motivated to get in the space game, find your passion and then focus your job search in the field. When you go to college, don't declare a major at first. Try a variety of courses in things you never heard of. The job market in five to ten years will have new occupations that no one has imagined.Don't worry about aerospace occupations. They will still be there when you graduate. Perhaps in college or later you will discover another passion and aerospace may be your second career (people do go back to school when they are ready to try a new challenge--people become engineers, lawyers, scientists, teachers, as a second or third career).You are not selling out or disappointing anyone except for your childhood fantasies if you don't become an astronaut or rocket scientist. Give that dream up. But even if you find another career you love, you will always have your fascination with aerospace which you can pursue as an avid hobbyist, a tourist, a collector, a reader, a viewer, an adventurer, etc.BTW, my mother was in labor with me as John Glenn was orbiting the earth in Friendship 7. He was my childhood hero. I grew up during the space race and remember when my parents woke me at 3 a.m. to watch the moon landing in 1969 when I was a 7 years old. I (and another million kids of the sixties and seventies) was just like you as a child. I also lost my interest in science and math in high school. I went to music school. I later had a fifteen year career in software training and consulting. Then I became a yoga teacher, too. I have no regrets that I am not an astronaut, a scientist, a skydiver. I still dream of being a pilot, but I'm not too old yet to take lessons! I can still delight in all things space and aircraft.
