PDF Editor FAQ

What was it like to suffer identity theft?

In short: a nightmare. In my case it got so crazy that I agreed to appear on CBS News' "48 Hours" to try to spread awareness about the issue. In 1998 when this happened to me, there weren't any identity theft/internet abuse laws in place yet. Fortunately, now...there are.I was unlucky enough to have an insane ex-husband who (because he'd gone back to living with his mother and had no job) had tons of time on his hands, and knew my SSN, birth date, and mother's maiden name. Here are some of the many things that went on:He applied for tons of credit cards using my information and listing himself as the "authorized user." The only way I found out about this was, I received both credit cards and decline notices for cards I'd never applied for. I had to call each and every company (a chore in itself, dealing with automated phone systems and hold music every time) to explain that the application was fraudulent. The number of inquiries into your credit, and the number fo declines, affects your credit. So not only did this take a lot of time to correct, but it decimated my credit (which took 10 years to re-build). You're allowed to submit a 100-word explanation on your credit report, but, that's insufficient. You OUGHT to be allowed to respond to each and every item on your report, similarly. Instead, you can respond once, to everything, in 100 words. Sucks.I had to flag my SSN with all 3 major credit bureaus, as someone whose SSN is being used wrongfully. This is a flag that can never, ever be removed. So now...15 years later...it's a hassle for me to apply for and get credit because there are tons of extra hoops I have to jump through. This guy was going online and ordering two to three magazine subscriptions a day in my name, and having them sent to my house. In every case, I had to dispute the bill, cancel the account, etc. That was no fun. In the end there were around 100 of these. He broke into my e-mail account (he could, because all Yahoo! needed to release a "lost password" was my birthdate, which he knew) and read all my e-mails, and sent out embarrassing e-mails as me. I was able to get his e-mail address shut off according to Yahoo!'s terms of service. When he used other e-mail addresses, I used my evidence to get his ISP to drop him based on a violation of their terms of service. People kept asking me, why don't you just change your e-mail address. I wouldn't because I didn't think I should have to incur even MORE inconvenience at the hands of a creep. He trolled forums relating to things he knew I liked, waited for me to post, and then would respond publicly with really awful, hurtful, personal, embarrassing stuff. I relied pretty heavily on my internet communities to carry me through that time, so this part was particularly hurtful because I felt like he was trying to ruin my lifeline. Fortunately the admins in every case were sympathetic, but, the damage had been done, in my eyes.It was YEARS before I was comfortable paying bills online or shopping online. I am still skittish about things like direct deposit.I lived in PA, he in AZ; while there were fraud laws and harrassment laws in both places, the local cops wouldn't touch it because he lived in AZ, and the AZ cops wouldn't touch it because I lived in PA. This is why I began to write articles about it, and appeared on "48 Hours." I am pleased to say that my story helped influence my state senator (who has my vote forever, btw) to sponsor an amendment to PA's Title 18 Harrassment Code to include online harrassment as criminal behavior. The guy had a stroke in 2003 and while I wouldn't wish his current condition on anyone, you can imagine I'm very happy knowing that I don't have to deal with these kinds of things anymore. He never would have stopped.

What president made the most change in their first 100 days?

Beyond a doubt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He is the only reason we talk about a president’s first 100 days at all. When you hear a conversation about any President’s first 100 days, this is a direct comparison to FDR. Roosevelt took office nearly four years into the Great Depression, and the American economy was in a virtual state of collapse when he took office, and had been steadily getting worse. Unemployment was at 25% and rising, the Gross Domestic Product of the U.S. had declined by 50% in the previous four years, more than 9000 banks had failed and customers were running to the banks every day around the country to pull their money out; homelessness had risen dramatically and there was a general sense of desperation and fear as these developments had been ongoing, and worsening, for years before FDR took office. His first 100 days changed everything, including our expectations for what a president is supposed to be able to accomplish.During that time, Roosevelt submitted to Congress 15 separate major bills, all of which were passed. He issued over 90 executive orders, including an executive order declaring a national bank holiday, closing all banks in the country until further notice to put a halt to the collapse of the banking system that had been ongoing throughout the first four years of the Great Depression. He passed the Emergency Banking Act and the Glass-Steagall Act, created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to insure bank deposits, created the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to regulate the stock market, passed the Federal Emergency Relief Act to provide federal aid to state efforts to assist the poor and unemployed during the Depression; created the Agricultural Adjustment Administration to aid farmers and the National Recovery Administration to promote the recovery of industry; the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Public Works Administration to start putting unemployed Americans back to work.It was an extraordinary and unprecedented period of accomplishment. It is the only reason any president is judged by what they do in their first 100 days. No one ever talked about this before Roosevelt. And no one since him has ever come close.

I have been frauded. The bank manager is changing the statement every time how the money came in my account and even held me responsible for the money lost. What should I do?

I have been frauded. The bank manager is changing the statement every time how the money came in my account and even held me responsible for the money lost. What should I do?The bank manager can not change your statements. The branch manager can only reprint your corrected statement. You must be given a written notice of the reason for the change. It just does not happen at the whim of the manager. There could be several reasons for money missing from your bank account:You deposited a check that had insufficient funds. The amount of the deposit is reversed and the defective check is returned to you with a letter of explanation. It’s up to you to contact the issuer of the check to make it good.Direct deposit reversed. A company you authorized to do direct deposits to your account, perhaps your employer, has reversed the direct deposit because of an error. Perhaps you were paid too much or not enough. The usual procedure is to reverse the entire transaction and re-deposit the correct amount. Your bank statement should show the transactions and the company that made the transactions. You need to contact the depositor directly for an explanation.Automatic withdrawal. You authorized a company to make automatic withdrawals from your account to pay your bill. Sometimes these companies make errors, make double withdrawals or fail to stop withdrawals after you canceled your service. This often happens with gym memberships. You usually need to deal directly with the company who you authorized to make the withdrawals. DO NOT EVER AUTHORIZE ANY PERSON OR COMPANY TO MAKE AUTOMATIC WITHDRAWALS FROM YOUR BANK ACCOUNT. DO NOT EVER SIGN-UP FOR AUTOMATIC PAYMENT OF YOUR CREDIT CARD FROM YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.DO NOT AUTHORIZE YOUR BANK TO WITHDRAW YOUR CAR PAYMENT FROM YOUR CHECKING ACCOUNT EVEN IF YOUR CAR LOAN IS AT THE SAME BANK AS YOUR CHECKING ACCOUNT.Other possible reasons is you lost a lawsuit and the judge has authorized the Sheriff to remove funds from your bank account to settle the judgment. Once again the bank should be able to explain the transaction.Bank error: The bank teller entered the wrong account number during a withdrawal by another customer. If you do not recognize the withdrawal you have the right to demand the bank document it was you who made the withdrawal. They should have your signature and now banks even take your thumbprint for cash withdrawals.ATM/Debit card fraud: Your debit card was cloned because you used a point of sale machine that had a skimmer. Your bank statement would show point of purchase transactions you did not make. You can dispute those transactions. But your statement should say the time and place of the transaction. It not just going to show money withdrawn without an explanation. Retailers have been photographing transactions for the past 25 years. The retailer must prove it was you.You used your computer at a public WiFi to access your bank. Your login credentials were stolen. The bank will not reimburse you for that. The bottom line is the bank manager must explain every withdrawal from your account that you do not recognize. If you suspect internal bank fraud you should complain to the office of the president of the bank if you do not get a satisfactory explanation from the branch manager. You are in Canada. If you can not get a satisfactory explanation contact the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions to ask if they take reports of suspected bank fraud or if you should contact local police or RCMP.1-800-385-8647
