This is a fantastic question.Active vocabulary is all the words that you know and use in your day-to-day life. These are the words that come to you most easily when you’re talking or writing.Passive vocabulary is all the words that you know when you see them, but are very unlikely to use as part of your day-to-day interactions. For example, you might know the meaning of the word “ancillary” but you probably wouldn’t drop it into a conversation. You’d use “extra” or “supporting” instead.If you want to grow your active vocabulary, then here are a few tactics:Use a thesaurus when you’re writing. Focus on the nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in your writing and look them up in a thesaurus. Is there a word that fits the context better? If there is then use that instead. The more you do this, the more you will start to use the word from your passive vocabulary actively. This is a process that many writers go through when they’re editing their writing, because writing that includes words from your passive vocabulary is generally more engaging and interesting. Reading helps develop your active vocabulary because the more you’re exposed to words from your passive vocabulary, the more likely you are to use them actively.Use flashcards. Flashcard tools like Anki have decks of cards that are specifically designed to help you improve your vocabulary. Again, the more you’re exposed to words from your passive vocabulary, the more likely you are to use them. Flashcard apps let you use techniques like spaced repetition that are a very effective way of improving the size of your active vocabulary.Remember that like anything, the key is to do a little and often. Britain’s Guardian newspaper, in 1986, estimated the size of the average person’s vocabulary as developing from roughly 300 words at two years old, through 5,000 words at five years old, to some 12,000 words at the age of 12 [1].The Guardian’s research suggested that it stays at around this number of words for the remainder of most (average) people’s lives—adding that this is roughly the same number of words as those drawn on by a popular newspaper in the course of producing its daily editions—while a graduate might have a vocabulary nearly twice as large (23,000 words). Shakespeare, according to Robert McCrum et al (whose estimate of the average vocabulary is 15,000 words), had one of the largest recorded vocabularies of any English writer at around 30,000 words[2].In point of fact, it’s all but impossible to be sure. Not simply because of the difficulty of estimating the number of words any given individual does use and understand, but because of the difficulty of defining what does or does not represent a discrete “word”. For example, is “hair-dryer” one word or two (“hair dryer”)? Do you include abbreviations and acronyms such as “a.m.” and “p.m.”, “’flu” and “BBC”? Is “haven’t” to be considered the same as “have not”, or is it a separate word? What about proper names, brand names? Do you count slang and regional dialect words?
