What makes you sad about people living in India?
Unpaid Internship !“Bachcha kabil bano, kabil... Kamyabi toh saali jhak maarke peeche bhagegi.”This extremely famous dialogue from the Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots is widely considered a gospel of God by many idiots who think that real life is as simple as reel life. You don't need to be good at something to land that dream job. As a matter of fact, companies are now making potential employees jump through hoops to land half-a-decent job.For many graduates today, being an intern has become an additional step on an increasingly wobbly career ladder. These days, a well rounded CV is one with a good amount of experience. But a company won't hire you until you have some experience. This is a classic case of catch-22. Nobody will hire you until you have the required experience but you won't get any experience until someone hires you.Well, what do you do now? The answer is pretty obvious - internships.Landing a desirable internship at a top company is a distant dream for a lot of students. It's an extremely rocky road if you are to land an internship in the first place.Firstly, you have to convince your parents that you actually need to do internships to do well in your career. After a million stressful conversations over the phone about this being your decision, they might finally give in. Secondly, not a lot of bigger companies offer internships where you learn some valuable industry skills.Source - WordPressIndia is a hard-working country. That's the best explanation for our incredibly high population and the flooding of almost every possible industry. So if a company wants something very basic to be done, they advertise the openings for interns. Once you're there, it makes no sense for the company to pay the interns because if you say no, they'll definitely find someone who'll agree to do it for free.Internships in India are generally not for skill generation. If it's a job that can be done by multiple people, companies use their huge reputation and woo youngsters with the overrated 'certificate' some guys refer to as a Letter of Recommendation.Source - WordPressFor every student who asks for stipend, there is always that one person who is willing to do it for free. And this absolutely destroys any remaining chance of a respectable stipend.Lately, a lot of companies have started using terms like loudest crew, etc to glamorise this bit of exploitation. Students are happy to be a part of this cool hip group and completely miss the point of an internship - getting ready for their field of interest.Using a fancy term for unpaid labour doesn't change the fact that you are, in fact, being exploited.Source - ViceEntertainment and media industry are plagued with this problem right now. The number of event management companies that have popped up recently can be construed as the rise of the Aggarwal sweets of our generation. Same is the case with content websites. Most of the youngsters are willing to work for peanuts and end up ruining the market for everyone else.A popular theory on the internet has brilliantly summarised the plight of interns.Q: What's the difference between a plant and an intern?A: The plant has leaves. The government policy about the same needs to be communicated to every student. The lack of guidelines and the awareness about this topic is a huge roadblock for the Indian youth. If we are to move towards development and a digital India, these topics need to be brought into the limelight.Source - SalonWe don't need hour long debates about an 'offensive' snapchat video or about a PIL filed against imaginary creatures for hurting our feelings. We need jobs and stipend. And we need it NOW!This practise of exploitation can be put to an end only if everyone is willing to take a firm stance. We need to call out the companies who've exploited us and are probably still exploiting numerous students in the name of internships. The Indian youth is our future and what kind of a future are we striving towards by cheating them out of their hard-earned money? The credit goes to- Here’s How Unpaid Internships Are Basically Exploiting Millions Of Youngsters In IndiaPS : Even I did an unpaid Internship for 3 months :((
What is your salary? Are you happy with it?
I am graduated from a decent private college in 2019.My college fee was around 4 lakhs per annum and I was always worried If I could make that money annually after graduation because the average package offered by companies in my college is around 3.5 to 5 LPA that too for Computer Science Branch. This fear always pushed me to work hard and try new things. Always used to talk to seniors and professors regarding trending technologies. Worked on developing multiple projects. After trying a lot finally decided to stick to a technology after the second year break. At that point in time, everyone is talking about Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning etc. I have chosen the same and did multiple courses from Udacity and Coursera. After I felt confident I started doing projects, writing blogs and participate in competitions in kaggle, Analytics Vidya etc. You can find my noob blog here vvr. After the end of the third year, I was looking for an internship in the same field. But I couldn't find a good one until the end of the summer holidays. There was a very successful senior from our college started a startup in Hyderabad and accepted my request for an internship in the month of August. The final year college has already started and companies for placements are slowly coming but I decided to take up the internship as parttime college as the Machine Learning Developer. My first salary for the time of internship is around 15,000. The work was good, our client was a reputed dating app based out of Hyderabad. It’s going well and the CEO told me that he will be giving me a fulltime opportunity after college. And he promised me that he will role out the offer letter only if I don't take any other opportunities as I can negotiate with others and move to another company. I completely believed him and I only wanted to work in Artificial Intelligence. There wasn't any other company that came to placements were looking for the same role. So, I decided to continue to work in the same company. In the last semester of our college, we can do a six-month internship. So, I decided to continue in the same company. He was initially happy with that and accepted it. But before the day I was joining he called me and said that we lost the client and he cannot continue me any more. I was devastated and there is nothing I can to do then. I requested him to offer me an unpaid internship as I have already given the details regarding my internship in the college. He somehow accepted it.I spent 20 lakhs for my graduation which is very high according to the standards of Indian colleges and I am jobless at the end of it. I completely lost my mind and slowly started feeling depressed after a week. His company is working out of 91SpringBoard which is a Co-Working space in Hyderabad. I used to go to the office and tried to work on multiple projects. After 15 days I found there is another company in the same building is hiring for the Computer Vision developers role. Those fifteen days were the darkest days of my life. I applied and luckily got into it. This was the happiest day.It was a six-month internship and really good role. I accepted and started working on Feb 1st 2019. It is a small startup funded by a single founder. My salary was 15000 for the internship period and they offered me a 6 lakhs package after the internship. I used to get around 49,800 take home as we didn't have any PF or other options. I am happiest in this period. 22 years old no strings attached, good pay for single life.Fast forward May 2020, COVID was in its peak and the company I am working wasn't sure about the future. They slowly started laying off people and the time has come. I was asked to resign on May 7 2020. I am in my home town living with parents and I lost the job. I declined an offer that I got a month before and it is too early to switch. Now even that company didn't respond.Applied to tens of companies didn't even receive a single positive response. I was at zero again. Three months passed and my previous boss referred to one of his friend who is looking for a Computer Vision developer for automating his waste management company. It was a blue-collar office where I am the only programmer. I am not sure about joining the company as I didn't see any future in it. But there isn't any other that I could find. The boss is really good and suggested me to work for fifteen days and see if the job fits me. I joined the company on August 17th for the same package but didn't sing the offer letter. The company is 30 km far from the city and there is a bus facility that picks me up at 7 am and drops me back at 7:30 t0 8:00 pm. I hated the job so much.I am defiantly not doing this job, decided after the first day. I received a mail on my third day from HR of a company. It stated that the company is looking for Research Engineer and the package they are going to offer is between 12 to 25lpa. I applied for the job and had multiple interviews and got selected. The package is more than 1.3 times from the previous package.Right now I receive more than a lakh per month which is more than double than the previous salary. All the people around me including my mom is happy. But I am not as happy as the earlier ones. I got used to this cycle now.
