PDF Editor FAQ

What are some interesting things that most people probably don't know about Renee Zellweger?

Renée Zellweger holds a special place in my heart because she’s a native Texan who was born April 25, 1969 in Katy, Texas.Renee is very unique and special for many different reasons.Listed below are some of the lesser known or unknown facts about the blonde actress:Early Life In Katy, TexasZellweger wasn’t a child star. She didn’t come from a family of performers. In essence she was simply a girl from a small Texas town with humble beginnings who decided to pursue a passion and worked hard every day to turn that passion into a living. Her father, Emil Erich Zellweger, is from the Swiss town of Au, St. Gallen and descends from an Appenzell noble family.Emil Zellweger was a mechanical and electrical engineer who worked in the oil refining business. Her mother, Kjellfrid Irene (née Andreassen) is Norwegian of Kven and Sámi descent.Zellweger’s mother was a nurse and midwife who moved to the United States to work as a governess for a Norwegian family in Texas.Zellweger attended Katy High School, where she was a cheerleader, gymnast, speech team member, and drama club member. She also participated in soccer, basketball, baseball, and football. She also ran track.Although she was big into sports and even won Most Valuable Player (MVP) for her playing on the girl’s football team, she was also a girly girl.Zellweger was the Homecoming Queen for her high school in Katy. She also was voted Dream Date or the girl most desired to date.In 1986, her academic paper, "The Karankawas and Their Roots", won third place in the first ever Houston Post High School Natural Science Essay Contest.Zellweger hasn’t forgotten her roots. Recently she returned to her former high school in a surprise appearance to celebrate the retirement of one of her former teachers.Attendance At University Of Texas at AustinAfter high school, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1991.While at the university, Zellweger took a drama course as an elective, which sparked her interest in acting. In Zellweger's junior year, her father lost his job and was unable to support her at college, so she took a job as a cocktail waitress in Austin, Texas.Zellweger work at Sugar’s Go-Go bar which was a topless bar. She was asked to be a dancer but politely refused and only worked serving cocktails.Zellweger learned a lot while working in her job as a cocktail waitress:"I learned a lot. As much as I did in my classes, that club paid for... I learned not to judge people, [and] that things are not black and white."Coors Light CommercialZellweger began getting small parts acting, and earned her Screen Actors Guild card for doing a Coors Light commercial. While still in college in 1993, she did "a bit part ... as a local hire" in the Austin-filmed horror-comedy film My Boyfriend's Back, playing "the girl in the beauty shop, maybe two lines. But the beauty shop [scene] got cut."Her first job after graduation was working in a beef commercial, while simultaneously auditioning for roles around Houston, Texas.Cult Classics - Texas Chainsaw Massacre & Empire RecordsZellweger’s first starring role in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994) was considered a classic slasher film.Zellweger attended the University of Texas at the same time as Matthew McConaughey and two of her first film roles also featured McConaughey—Dazed and Confused and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation.Zellweger and McConaughey have yet to work together in a film since when they did the two previous films, but they were at one point reunited on the cover art for the newly released Blu-Ray of Texas Chainsaw Massacre before being cropped out for legal reasons. Her role as Gina in the film Empire Records in 1995 is considered by many to be a cult favorite.Zellweger waited awhile before heading off to Hollywood to pursue her acting career. After graduation from college she decided to work on her acting craft locally by pursuing jobs in Austin and Houston.Once she had enough experience and confidence, she then decided to make the jump to Hollywood on December 6, 1993, at the age of 24.Before Zellweger’s career took off, after she moved to Los Angeles, her living situation wasn’t the best. Her move to Hollywood was very strategic, but it paid off in spades.Only two years later she booked Jerry Maguire with Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise.Jerry Maquire Was Her Breakout RoleAt one point, she lived in a tiny garage apartment with her dog, Dillon, but that wasn’t even the worst of it.The actress used to work and live in such a terrible neighborhood in Los Angeles that any time she came home late at night she would have to wait in her car for crack deals to wrap up before she felt safe enough to go inside.Zellweger’s big breakthrough occurred when she became widely known to audiences with Jerry Maguire (1996), in which she played Dorothy Boyd, a single mother, and the romantic interest of a glossy sports agent (Tom Cruise). The film received unanimous critical acclaim and grossed over US$273 million worldwide. Her line in Jerry Maquire “You had me at Hello” in the film is considered one of the greatest movie lines of all time.It later came out that Zellweger didn’t quite understand what the line meant and initially struggled with how to say it in the film.It was Cruise who personally chose her to play his love interest and later credited her with "revealing the core humanity of the movie".She was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.Zellweger has reported that she had imposter’s syndrome throughout her time on the set of Jerry Maguire because she had never taken acting lessons and worried she was way out of her element. The actress hit it off immediately with her co-star Tom Cruise and they became life long friends. The two actors are still friends all these years later. Zellweger has revealed that Cruise still sends her birthday presents every year. When Renee Zellweger won the 2020 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for her starring role as Judy Garland in Judy, she gave a special thanks to former co-stars Vincent D’Onofrio, “for showing me how to work and the seriousness of work so that it can matter more,” and Tom Cruise, “for your example of professionalism on set and striving for excellence and generosity and unconditional kindness.”After the release of Jerry Maguire, in 1997, Zellweger landed on Vanity Fair’s list of Hollywood’s Next Wave of Actresses alongside other acclaimed actresses like Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron and Claire Danes.A Flop With A Price Above RubiesIn the religious drama A Price Above Rubies (1998), Zellweger starred as a young woman who finds it difficult to conform to the restrictions imposed on her by the community. The film flopped at the box office, but Zellweger was applauded by some film critics such as Ebert, who, once again impressed by her, stated that she gave a "ferociously strong performance.Working With Meryl Streep And William HurtZellweger starred in the 1998 drama One True Thing, opposite William Hurt and Meryl Streep, as a woman forced to put her life on hold in order to care for her mother who is dying of cancer. One True Thing took in a modest US$23 million in the US, but had a positive critical response.Variety magazine's Todd McCarthy stated about Zellweger:"Projecting gravity and impatience that she hasn't shown before, Zellweger is outstanding as the smart young woman who resents the interruption to her life's momentum, but ends up growing in ways she never would have expected."The BachelorZellweger played the female lead opposite Chris O'Donnell in the little-seen romantic comedy The Bachelor (1999).Although the film didn’t win rave reviews, it showcased Zellweger’s gift for comedy on the big screen.Me Myself & Irene With Former Fiance Jim CarreyZellweger starred in the Farrelly brothers comedy Me, Myself & Irene (2000), with Jim Carrey. She played a woman on the run for what she believes is a false accusation set up by her mob-connected ex-boyfriend.The film was a commercial success, grossing US$149 million worldwide.Zellweger started dating her co-star Jim Carrey and they eventually got engaged to be married. They called off the engagement before the marriage took place.Nurse Betty And First Golden Globe AwardThe actress starred in Nurse Betty (also 2000), a black comedy directed by Neil LaBute and alongside Morgan Freeman.Zellweger played a Kansas waitress who suffers a nervous breakdown after witnessing her husband's murder.San Francisco Chronicle found the actress to be "a performer who emanates kindness and a pure heart".Variety remarked: "Few actresses can convey the kind of honesty and humanity that Zellweger does here — it's hard to imagine the film without her dominant, thoroughly credible performance".She won her first Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, but she was in the bathroom when future co-star Hugh Grant announced her name.Zellweger later protested: "I had lipstick on my teeth!"Bridget Jones In 2001Zellweger gained the prized lead role of Bridget Jones, opposite Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, in the British romantic comedy Bridget Jones's Diary, based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Helen Fielding.Winning the role initially brought her a lot of criticism because she was British and didn’t have the same type of body as the main character she was going to play.Based on the best-selling novel by Helen Fielding, Zellweger made her onscreen debut as the titular character in Bridget Jones's Diary in 2001, followed by Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason in 2004 and Bridget Jones's Baby in 2016.Zellweger took the criticism to heart. To make sure her British accent was so good people would think she was actually British, Zellweger took a job as a PR assistant at Picador, which happens to be the company that published the Bridget Jones’s Diary book. She was apparently an ideal employee who took her job seriously and acted professionally, even when her job consisted of clipping out articles about the movie, which mostly consisted of negative thoughts about her casting.According to co-star Hugh Grant, her accent started off rough but in the end became, “the best American doing English that I’ve ever heard.”The actress also gained 17 pounds for the role by eating a lot of pizza, desserts, and protein shakes in order to acquire the same body as Bridget Jones. This role won her a second Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and her first Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominations for Best Leading Actress. Bridget Jones's Diary was a major commercial success, earning US$281 million worldwide.Zellweger’s work in Bridget Jones diary placed her on the top actress earner’s list.Due to her time in England preparing for the various Bridget Jones roles where she perfected her accent, she became a true fan of the Chelsea Football Club and attended a game in disguise during a break in filming. In 2007, Zellweger popped up on the highest paid actresses list thanks to multiple paydays of $15 million for movies like Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and Cinderella Man, and right before taking a hiatus from acting she had a net worth of $45 Million. In a new interview with Vanity Fair (2020), she said she's open to revisiting the lovably messy character of Bridget Jones once again.White OleanderZellweger took on the role of a former actress serving as a foster mother, alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, in the drama White Oleander, for which she received a Satellite Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress – DramaChicago - Roxie HartThe actress also portrayed Roxie Hart in the 2002 musical film Chicago, directed by Rob Marshall and co-starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah, and John C. Reilly. The movie garnered wide critical acclaim and won the Best Picture award at the 75th Academy Awards.Writing for The Daily Telegraph, Tim Robey labeled Chicago as the "best screen musical [since 1972's Cabaret]" and the San Francisco Chronicle commented, "Zellweger is a joy to watch, with marvelous comic timing and, in her stage numbers, a commanding presence".No one, including Zellweger knew she could sing, until she did for Chicago. In order to make sure she was completely prepared for her role as Roxie Hart, she took 10 months of grueling singing and dancing lessons before she started filming in order to be able to give it her very best in her role.Zellweger always prepared as much as possible for films. Not only does she work hard at learning any required accents (Bridget Jones) but she also learned how to play the piano for the film Appaloosa and performed four songs for it.She even prepared to learn the violin for a movie she never ended up doing but did end up learning how to play, according to her, “the best ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’ you’ve ever heard!”She earned her second Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominations for Best Leading Actress, winning her second Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.Salma Hayek publicly expressed thanks to her close pal and fellow actress Renée Zellweger after the two were nominated for the same Academy Award and Zellweger swooped in to help Hayek, who was having dress troubles. It all went down back in 2003 when Hayek and Zellweger were nominated for best actress for their performances in “Frida” and “Chicago,” respectively. Zellweger ended up loaning Hayek a dress from her personal collection after Hayek’s original gown ripped apart at the seams.Cold MountainBefore Zellweger was cast in the movie Cold Mountain she was already a fan of the book, so much so that she even thought about trying to buy the rights to the property.Once Newsweek called it, “the most beautifully written book about the American civil war in the past 50 years” she knew she had zero chance of being able to afford it.Anthony Minghella had heard about Zellweger’s interest, so after he ended up buying the rights and writing the screenplay, he immediately contacted Zellweger to play Ruby.Zellweger appeared in the war drama Cold Mountain, opposite Nicole Kidman and Jude Law, playing a woman who helps a farmer following her father's presumed death.Zellweger is one of only 13 actresses to win an award from five different shows for the same role. This occurred for her work in Cold Mountain. She won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the 76th Academy Awards (Oscar), the 61st Golden Globe Awards, the 10th Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG), Critic’s Choice and the 57th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA)Romance WoesThe actress had a romance with musician Jack White in 2003.In May 2005, Zellweger married singer Kenny Chesney. Four months later the couple obtained an annulment. It was considered a very scandalous marriage and divorce with Zellweger expressing sadness at many of the rumors which swirled around the sudden annulment.A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of FameZellweger was named one of the top 20 entertainers of 2001 by Entertainment News and one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People magazine that same year.On May 24, 2005, 17 years after first visiting the Hollywood (1988) Walk of Fame, Zellweger was awarded the 2,286th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one of her big dreams.Zellweger was one of the highest-paid actresses in the world by 2007 and was named Hasty Pudding Theatricals' Woman of the Year in 2009.The actress was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame in 2011.Zellweger was probably considered for, or lost out on, a lot of roles in her career but the ones that stand out the most are for the movies Moulin Rouge and Nine as the actresses who got those parts—Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz, respectively.Since both parts went on to be nominated for statues, it’s believed that if Zellweger had played the parts she may have added more awards to her resume.Relationship With Bradley CooperIn 2009 she started dating Bradley Cooper after having met him on the set of Case 39. They separated in 2011.When Zellweger was dating Bradley Cooper, the two had a fire scare at Cooper’s mother’s house while watching the Golden Globes. They had to call 911 after the fire in the fireplace made its way into the living room. Luckily, no one was hurt as the fire department arrived and put it out.Zellweger and Cooper had another issue with fire on the set of their movie Case 39 when a special effects fire got out of hand and burned down the entire set, resulting in production being shut down for the day.Rumors in Hollywood indicated the couple eventually broke up when Cooper’s star began to rise and his career became too busy to support their relationship.Zellweger took on the role of a social worker assigned to a mysterious girl in Case 39, a supernatural thriller. The title had a lengthy post-production and was not released in theaters in the United States until 2010.The film was universally panned by critics and only earned US$5.3 million in its opening weekend, leading Indiewire to write that Zellweger "faces an [u]ncertain [f]uture" as she was in "an unforgiving industry that doles out few juicy roles for women over 40.Not only did the film hurt her career, her romance with Cooper also turned out badly for her.High Grossing FilmsTwo of her highest grossing movies are animated, with Shark Tale making $367.3 million worldwide and Bee Movie coming in at $287.6 million. As for live action, Chicago is second with $306.8 million worldwide and then Bridget Jones’s Diary with $281.9 million.Zellweger even set a record for biggest September opening in the UK with $11 million for Bridget Jones’s Baby.Zellweger has proven she can hold her on in any type of acting venue from rom/com to serious drama, thrillers and even animated films.JudyAfter accepting her Golden Globe Best Actress In A Motion Picture - Drama during the ceremony, the Judy actress delivered a passionate speech about Judy Garland being 'one of the greatest icons of our time'.One person not happy about the movie Judy was Garland’s daughter, Liza Minnelli. She made it abundantly clear on social media.Minnelli wrote that she did, “not approve nor sanction the upcoming film about Judy Garland in any way.”Zellweger kept quiet on the matter. At the end of her speech the awards ceremony drowned out the rest of her words about her role in Judy and the actress she played.Ricky Gervais, the host of the 2020 Golden Globes made a comment after Zellweger’s Judy speech was cut off. He said “kill me now.”In a brief interview with Ryan Seacrest before the Golden Globe ceremony (where she won for Judy) on the Red Carpet Zellweger accidentally called Ryan by the name “Brian”.Zellweger recently turned 50, but many of her fans believe she is getting a second wind in her acting career, having recently won The Golden Globe for Best Actress for Judy where Zellweger magnificently portrayed the famous Judy Garland. As of January 21, 2020, Zellweger has won the Golden Globe, Critic’s Choice Award and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) for her starring role as Judy Garland.Zellweger recently won the 2020 BAFTA for her role in Judy. She is the favorite to also win the 2020 Oscar and possibly other key awards.Zellweger landed on the list of Worst Dressed for the 2020 SAG Awards for her slit-cut navy Maison Margiela gown, even though she is usually on the Best Dressed List for her impeccable fashions. It was quire a surprise.A Close Relationship With Her BrotherIn an interview with the media Zellweger shared how her brother, whom she is very close to, helped her get over a very public romantic breakup. While at the grocery store he bought all the tabloid magazines with her and her love troubles on the cover. Then he started laughing so hard, he was actually crying, over the crazy tabloid stories. Then she started laughing too at how ridiculous the entire situation was and was then fine about her romantic challenges.A Six Year Hiatus From ActingZellweger took a six-year hiatus from acting, from 2010 to 2016.Her main reason for the break was exhaustion, as she stated, “I was fatigued and wasn’t taking the time I needed to recover between projects.”She also started to hate the sound of her own voice which is very unique and has helped her with some of her acting roles.Although her hiatus raised eyebrows, in retrospect it was one of the best decisions she could have made for her career since she came back to the acting world with a vengeance.Almost immediately she snagged the starring role of Judy based on one part of the life of Judy Garland which has already won her a Golden Globe and a Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) award and may win her an Oscar.Sometimes taking a break is the best thing an actor can do for their career because it allows them to step back and hone their skills. In Renee’s case it was a brilliant strategy.During her hiatus from acting, Zellweger took screenwriting courses at UCLA and even co-created a TV show with Anthony Tambakis, one of her professors. The show was called Cinnamon Girl and was loosely based on Zellweger’s experience moving from Texas to LA to pursue acting. The show was initially bought by Lifetime and a pilot was filmed but in the end, Lifetime decided not to move forward with the project.Seven Year Relationship With Musician Doyle Bramhall IIFrom 2012 to 2019, she was in a relationship with Doyle Bramhall II, who is a musician, songwriter, and producer.Change In Appearance And Questions About Plastic SurgeryAfter returning from her hiatus from acting Zellweger was criticized for the change in the appearance of her face which many critics complained was the result of bad plastic surgery.Zellweger dismissed the attacks and claimed her face had changed as a result of normal aging. This point in her career Zellweger has to fight the prevailing opinion that an actress may not be able to find good roles after age 40.The actress has already debunked that theory with regard to her career by wowing audiences with her turn as Judy.Dipping Her Toes Into The Netflix World & Returning To The Small ScreenZellweger starred on Netflix in 2019 as Anne Montgomery in a thriller titled What/If.Although the Netflix thriller did not win high marks, Zellweger’s performance was lauded.Zellweger’s starring role in What/If took Zellweger back to where she got her acting start which was in TV movies.What/If was the the first time she appeared on the small screen in 24 years, with the last time being in the TV movie Shake, Rattle and Rock!Known For Her Friendliness To FansEven though Zellweger is a major film actress and star, she is famous for being very friendly to any fans who stop to talk to her or ask for her autograph. Many stories have appeared in the media over the years from people who met Zellweger in random events and were stunned by her sincere sweetness and friendliness.Meanwhile Zellweger’s childhood home in Katy, recently (January 2020) went back on the market for anyone who wants to live where the famous actress grew up.The house, features two acres of unrestricted land with a baseball field in the back yard. She is considered a favorite to win the Academy Award in 2020 for her role as Judy.Best wishes to all.

How would you explain quota system to a child?

With a story, of course. Children love stories, don’t they. Here is one I wrote a while ago.Two little boys & a bicycleThere lived a poor family with 2 boys. The first one was 8 yrs old, the second 5 years - as is the tradition in the family, the kids learn to ride bicycles at the age of 5.The father of the children was in a fix, he did not have money to buy another bicycle. To avoid a sibling fight in the family, he called his children into a room and said, "Dear children, I do not have the money to buy another cycle - so you will have to share the bicycle with each other - 49.5% (of time) for the younger one and 50.5% for the older one."This demotivated the elder child. He argued, "But father, I'm more qualified to make use of the cycle. So far I have been using the bicycle for 3 (000) years. I could buy vegetables from the market for the development of entire family, go to school, practice my soccer only because I have the bicycle. By giving the cycle time to the young one, you are not making 'efficient' use of the resources. He doesn't know how to ride a bicycle. He could drive the cycle into the road - endangering not only himself, but also others on the road. Once he shows he can cycle, I will not have any objection to sharing the cycle. But until then it is not right to provide cycle time to him. This is not fair"The wise father replied, "But son, I cannot afford to get another cycle - however hard I try. You have had a cycle for 100% of time for 3 years uninterrupted. How is it unfair that the younger one gets only 50% of the time ? We have to make-do with what we have during our difficult times with available resources. While it may appear that we are scuttling the development of the family or being inefficient, we are indeed investing in the future of our entire family. Having 2 of you able to drive the bicycle will help the family get more things done in future. You know as much as I do, that learning to drive a cycle will require practice time until the younger one learns to ride the cycle. Indeed, learning to drive has its elements of risk - so was the risk I took when getting a cycle and letting you practice in it. Now it is your turn to teach our younger ones. The faster the younger one learns to ride the cycle, the faster our family will prosper. So please don't think of your brother as a competition. He is a part of the family and deserves as much support as you have had from me."Source: Why not to feel demotivated when you see someone less qualified than you getting better opportunities in life because of the reservation system in India?Discriminatory vs. non-discriminatory reservationsThe moral of the story relates to the fact that the Indian Caste System reserved 100% seats for the men of privileged castes for over 3000 years in education, jobs, promotions, marriages, inheritance etc. without any entrance exams. This is discriminatory reservations. This is the primary reason why the political, economic, educational power remains in the hands of the privileged castes. The current affirmative plan reverses this process by peaceful redistribution of opportunities to all. We need to have proportional reservations to reverse this process. This is non-discriminatory reservations.Where one caste and community get their rightful share of opportunities irrespective of the inequalities their communities faced in the past.Effects of discriminatory quotaDiscriminatory reservations are the primary reason for India’s colonization, poverty and illiteracy.India’s armies were weak simply because the caste system refused to teach skill of war to all Indians. India was invaded repeatedly from Alexander, Ghazni, Mongols and British. They all plundered India. Take Israel for example, has mandatory military training for all[1]. They are small country in a hostile neighborhood and no one messes with them. India had 300M people, there were 100K Britishers who ruled us in India. We could not defend our borders we were colonized.India’s scientific progress was poor during the time when education was limited to privileged castes. Europe educated all its people during the Renaissance movement. More people where educated and Europe flourished and progressed to dominate the world. Great civilizations like India and China became colonies. India became a den for quacks chanting mantra instead of scientific research.India’s economy collapsed in the rapid changes. British conquered the world with the East India Company. Indians would not make West British Company because they would lose their caste status. Read more Kala pani (taboo) - Wikipedia. India from being the richest country in the world blessed with natural resources and abundant sunlight became the poorest countries in the world.Figure: Shows India’s decline due to caste system and progress due to affirmative actionIndia’s caste system and discriminatory quota system is the reason why India is today the home for the most illiterate, ignorant and poor people.Affirmative Action - non-discriminatory quotasThe non-discriminatory quota ensure that all citizens of our country have equal access to all opportunities irrespective of their historic inequalities due to the caste system. The privileged castes have enormous wealth and power because of using 100% reservations for 3000 years. It reflects in the current status listed below.Figure: Showing Wealth inequality in India (Source: India )The Forbes list of Indian billionaires, shows that almost all of them are from privileged castes. As stated in the bicycle story, the privileged castes ride on their privileges for 3000 years. Only now, a small part of the opportunities for education and jobs are given to underprivileged castes Indians.About 49.5% reserved for 69% of the population - which is less than proportional representation that too only in a small section of government jobs. Most of the jobs available in the country is unorganized sector - there is no reservation there.Brainwashing childrenChildren understand the unfairness of this intuitively. The understand the concept of taking turns. If one child gets all the toys for 3000 years, then it is the turn of the other child now. They have a better sense of justice when they get to know the facts about the caste system. However, children are often told many lies about the caste system. They are told that there is no caste system in India. They are told that all Indians go to same schools as themselves and are treated equally. This is clearly not true. They are not told that their fellow SC/ST students are forced to wash toilets because of caste discrimination in India.Figure: Picture shows Dalit children forced to wash toilets in schools.Read news reports of the incident of discrimination of SC/ST students.Arunthathiyar children cleaning toiletsDalit girls clean school toilets in absence of sweepers in JaipurTeachers held for forcing Dalit students to clean toilets, The demon called untouchabilityThey are not told that there are human rights violations in schools of India.India: Marginalized Children Denied EducationAll this results in most of the SC/ST students drop out of schools.Figure: Graphics showing high school dropout rates of Dalits in IndiaChildren are not told that most Indians schools don’t even have working toilets leave alone classroom benches and black boards.Figure: Picture showing poor government schools vs good private schoolsThis is because those who go to private schools don’t know the real status of under-privileged castes in India. Below is a typical statistics of students in good private school in Delhi.Source: School Report CardsMost children understand the unfairness of the caste system and its effects on the SC/ST/OBC once they get to know the real India and Indians. When explained properly with real facts (instead of fiction), they understand what that injustice means and understand why affirmative action is in place. They understand taking turns at opportunity. Now is the turn of SC/ST/OBCs to get educated and become doctors, PMs, IAS officers.Footnotes[1] Conscription in Israel - Wikipedia

Is there any anti-Konkani sentiment in Karnataka, especially in the Bangalore and Mysore regions?

I have to disagree with some things is User-12235930731662850107’s answer. Not every problem and discrimination faced by Konkanis is because of anti-Konkani sentiment. It is important to recognize what is due to anti-Konkani sentiment and what is due to caste discrimination. Also action of fringe elements shouldn’t be generalized to all people.Konkanis have been living for hundreds of years in Coastal and Malnad Karnataka. There is no anti-Konkani sentiment in these two regions. I live in Shivamogga district and have never faced any hostility for speaking Konkani. Konkanis are not strangers in these parts and people know Konkanis is not some North Indian language.Until some 50–60 years ago, Konkanis didn’t move much into inland Karnataka. There were very little Konkanis in Bengaluru 100 years ago. Most of the Konkanis came from Coastal Karnataka in search of jobs from 1960s onwards. Many Bangaloreans and most Kannadigas from other regions of inland Karnataka still have little to no contact with Konkanis. There is a widespread perception in Karnataka that all Konkanis are Goud Saraswat Brahmins (GSBs). This is because most of the famous Konkanis in Karnataka are GSBs. Saraswats Brahmins are known for eating fish, a practice that isn’t followed by any Kannada Brahmins. Hence people think all Konkanis are GSBs and hence all of them are fish eaters. This often comes up as an annoyance to vegetarian Konkanis. But that is easily remedied by telling them that there are vegetarian Konkanis too. This assumption / misconception has often become troublesome while getting houses for rent. But this isn’t due to anti-Konkani sentiment but an issue of vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Those same people won’t rent their house to non-vegetarian Kannadigas either. In fact many vegetarian Konkanis refuse to rent their house to non-vegetarian Konkanis too. One of my Konkani friend’s family in Bengaluru had faced this problem too. Along with some Kannada Brahmins not giving them rent, a Konkani CSB family refuse to rent them too, because they were mashli khattale (Fish eaters). Getting rent is not as difficult now as it was before. As for the MLC Ivan D'Souza being refused the chance to speak in Konkani, here’s what I found from a Daijiworld report:MLC Ivan D'Souza tried to raise topics relating to Konkani language at the Legislative Council session on Tuesday December 16, 2014 in Konkani but had to relent as the council chairman discouraged him from doing so.The council chairman, in reply to Ivan's insistence on speaking in Konkani, noted that others will not be able to understand what he was saying, if he spoke in Konkani. In addition, he also pointed out that the facility of translation was not available. On Ivan's determined efforts to speak in Konkani, the chairman said there was no one to translate what he said. He instead suggested Ivan to provide copy of what he wanted to say in Konkani so that it can be distributed to everyone. He therefore asked Ivan to raise the topics in Kannada.Ivan, who thereafter spoke in Kannada, raised the topic relating to the fact that there is no provision to learn Konkani at PU level in the state. He said that draft syllabus had been handed over to the department of pre-university education, asking them to approve the same, in the year 2012. He said even after lapse of over two years, there has been progress in this matter.Ivan sought facility for everyone to learn Konkani as third language in all primary and high schools in the state, and also make a provision to teach Konkani in PU level. 'All universities in the state should facilitate Konkani study chairs,' he urged.Floor leader of the government, S R Patil, said that he will get information from the department concerned and furnish replies to the government within 30 days.As you can see, the problem was with lack of translators. If he had talked in Konkani without anyone to translate, how will others understand what he is saying? He had to speak in Kannada to get the work done. I am sure Konkanis won’t mind that he spoke in Kannada if his efforts end up helping Konkani.I researched some things about the 2012 attack on Konkani Catholics by Kannada activists to search their motives. What I found is that the attacks were perpetrated by Kannada Catholics belonging to the organisation Akhila Karnataka Catholic Christara Kannada Sangha (AKCCKS). Their demand was to conduct prayers in Kannada. Many churches Bengaluru use Tamil, Malayalam or Konkani. This has been a longtime issue among Bengaluru Christians. Tamil Christians are the dominant majority. Those demanding the use of Kannada in prayers had no courage to demand it from Tamils and tried to violently replace Konkani, thinking Konkani Christians are soft targets. They went so far as to tell Konkanis to go to Goa.On Sunday when the faithful came out of the Saccidananda Chapel, they faced the wrath of about 25 Kannada activists; fully drunk, using abusive language attacked the faithful. The Konkani Catholics totally taken by surprise, put up a tough resistance. In the scuffle that lasted over an hour, two Konkani leaders and a young boy were physically assaulted. The Kannada activists were shouting slogans, “Konkanies go to Goa! There is no place for you in Karnataka.”In a short while, the police arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd. The wounded Konkanis after obtaining first aid at the local hospital lodged a police complaint at the Subrahmanyanagar police station. The local police inspector Somegowda after conducting preliminary inquiry gave assurance that such incidents will not be repeated. FIR has been filed against the activists.According to a local leader, “The pontifical commission that visited Bangalore has given its opinion that while safeguarding the primacy of Kannada, they are in favour of masses in all languages, namely, Tamil, Konkani, Malayalam, Hindi, etc. That is the reason why, the Kannada activists are agitated. They want to stop Archbishop Dr Bernard Moras from implementing this order.”Now the Konkani Associations are alerted, the Konkani Federation has reiterated its stand for Konkani language. Other language groups, such as Tamil, Malayalam and some moderate Kannadigas have promised strong support.Konkani leader Edwin D’Souza stated, “There are over three lac Konkanis in the Archdiocese but how come we do not have even a single mass in Konkani?” as the state government has recognized Konkani as one of the state language and formed Konkani Sahithya Academy and also introduced Konkani as third language in some of the schools.Police conducted an investigation and it was found the was instigated by two Kannada priests over their quest to polarize Christians to increase their power within the Church. Christian organizations sent a letter to Pope Francis detailing this attack and urging for the removal of those priests. Here is the contents of the letter:Source: Bengaluru: Christian Organisations Send Letter to Pope Francis to De-frock Two Priests - Mangalorean.comThese persons have been for years masquerading as crusaders of Kannada in Churches and have been misguiding people by shamelessly causing violent protests, law and order problems, all in the name of getting primacy for the Kannada language in the liturgical celebrations in our Catholic Church. It is no secret that their violence was actually a Mask for making money because, their violent actions have not spared even genuine Kannada Speaking Priests from becoming victims, for example in the Christ the King Church, Yeshwanthpur, which is adjoining the St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, these people have gone to the extent of pouring acid on the then Parish Priest, Fr Lawrence Noronha, obstructing Holy Eucharist at St John the Baptist Church, Vijayanagar, and physically assaulting and attacking Fr.C.Jacob, a Kannadiga priest, while conducting a service in Kannada, in the St.Mary’s Church at Hegde Nagar and several other churches over the past several years, especially and intentionally during the Holy Week Liturgical celebrations preceding Easter or Christmas celebrations. Will anyone fighting for the cause of Kannadigas attack Kannadiga Priests while celebrating a Mass in Kannada? These priests with their anti-social supporters, including those from the self-processed communal forces and anti-minorities organisations, especially Non-Christians such as Kannada writer Chidananda Murthy, Pramila Nesargi, Pundalika Halambi and other busy-bodies like Kannada Rakshana Vedike President Narayana Gowda, etc, have been threatening of holding protests and demonstrations on the streets even after the release of the Circular 131/2015, dated 12th April 2015 by the Arch Diocese of Bangalore, regarding the Promulgation of Particular Legislation based on the latest & final Directives issued by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Vatican – As a Language Policy for the Liturgy in the Archdiocese of Bangalore, which has actually given absolute supremacy and prominence to Kannada in the Churches of the Arch diocese of Bangalore. This has clearly exposed their motive as Not Kannada BUT a deliberate ploy of fomenting Disturbance aimed at Driving Catholics away to Other Protestant denominations. We have authentic and credible information obtained from various sources regarding the so-called widespread fund collections carried out by these priests through several fraudulent means and organizations, which according to our reliable information, runs into several crores of rupees to finance and sustain their sectarian and selfish agenda. It is reliably learnt that it is a conspiracy to intentionally create an unhealthy atmosphere in the Catholic Church, AND to also to divert the attention away from the actual issue only to save the culprits in the murder case. These persons have been unnecessarily creating trouble in the Church and are opposing the latest Circular on the Language policy also, instead of appreciating and welcoming it, (if they were genuinely interested in upholding the cause of Kannada), which has addressed the issue in the best ever possible way, because of the fear that they would also be in jail one day along with their colleagues, Secretary of the Balaga or Association Fr William Patrick, and Fr Elias Daniel, a key activist of the Balaga or Association, for actively Conspiring, Abetting and Aiding the Murder of Fr.K.J.Thomas. They know the truth has to come out one day and this explain their frustration and desperation. It is in public knowledge that the Carmel Seva Sangam-trust which is run by the president of the Catholic Karnataka Kannada Priests Association/Balaga (Fr) A Thomas, receives funds from foreign agencies called FODERVEREIN BEDEN, and ANNAPURNA FOUNDATION Germany. What is interesting is that these funding agencies are according to sources also recipients of funds from amongst others, Billy Graham Evangelist Association, P.O.Box.1270, Charlotte, 28201, 1270 USA (having an Indian Bank Account No.911010024922852 in Axis Bank, Sahakaranagar Branch) and LIVING WORD FELLOWSHIP. 512, Beach Pond Road, Voluntown, CT 06381, Box, 36, USA, who directly take care of AGAPE Ministries India (having an Indian Bank Account No.15334 in Canara Bank, D’Costa Square, Branch) and also PARTNER IN ASIAN MISSION, Box 531011, Birmingham, AL-35253, USA financing AGAPE Bible Fellowship(having an Indian Bank Account No.21638 in Canara Bank, D’Costa Square, Branch). The most shocking/coincidental aspect is that the purpose for all these funding agencies in sending money to India is the same: “Maintenance of Priests/other religious functionaries”. Crores and crores of rupees are flowing for the maintenance of Priests? Which Priests? The Priests of the Catholic Karnataka Kannada Priests Association/Balaga? The usage of the foreign funds for any purpose other than what it was got/sent would amount to a violation under 3.6.1 of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 2010(FCRA 2010) earlier Act of 1976 (FCRA 1976). We have already complained to the concerned authorities in this regard for a thorough investigation and necessary legal action. We also have documentary evidences of police complaints regarding the some of the shameful & unlawful activities, violent incidents and other illegal activities involving most of these priests in different police stations, which would be furnished in due course. The latest bout of creating disturbance in the Catholic Church has been that of bringing in busy bodies again such as Mr.Pundalika Halambi and Mr.Narayana Gowda to oppose the latest circular which has been released by the Arch diocese of Bangalore. These are ‘Hindus’ who have never had the nerve to demand the usage of Kannada in their own places of worship ‘Temples’ or the Guts to utter a word demanding the Muslims to use Kannada in the Mosques, Yet have the courage to speak about the language used in our Churches, because these corrupt and criminal priests have shamelessly brought them to only serve their selfish motive, for causing disturbances amongst a section of Catholics in Karnataka. As can be seen from the police investigation, these attacks are part of quarrel between Catholics and Protestants. It is in no way representative of Kannadigas. To conclude, Konkanis in Bengaluru face some problems, especially regarding rent. Some ignorant people think Konkani is a North Indian language. But these minor problems aren’t any more than the ones faced by other language speakers or those who are traditionally not from Bengaluru. Occasional problems are faced by all minorities. There isn’t any widespread anti-Konkani sentiment is Karnataka. The general attitude towards Konkani and Konkanis in Karnataka is far better than in Maharashtra.Answered for “Is there any anti-Konkani sentiment in Karnataka, especially in the Bangalore and Mysore regions?”.
