PDF Editor FAQ

Do you enjoy being a woman?

A2A. No.I think it is a raw fucking end of the deal. If I get pregnant it’s apparently all my fault for being a goddamn slut. At least in Michigan, because I’m obviously a terrible fucking person and thus don’t deserve any sort of insurance for the procedure. ’Cause I’m the worst. Don’t believe me? Here’s the shit you have to go through in Michigan if you want an abortion:In Michigan, the following restrictions on abortion were in effect as of January 1, 2018:A woman must receive state-directed counseling that includes information designed to discourage her from having an abortion, and then wait 24 hours before the procedure is provided.Private insurance policies cover abortion only in cases of life endangerment, unless individuals purchase an optional rider at an additional cost.Health plans offered in the state’s health exchange under the Affordable Care Act can only cover abortion if the woman's life is endangered, unless individuals purchase an optional rider at an additional cost.Abortion is covered in insurance policies for public employees only in cases of life endangerment, unless individuals purchase an optional rider at an additional cost. The use of telemedicine to administer medication abortion is prohibited. The parent of a minor must consent before an abortion is provided.Public funding is available for abortion only in cases of life endangerment, rape or incest. An abortion may be performed at or after viability only if the woman's life is endangered. So, basically, if I really want to have total bodily autonomy, I have to pay more. And thank god I’m not a minor.I could express more explicitly how I feel about this, but I’d probably just get banned from Quora.Tread carefully in your comments. This is not a place to argue with me. You will get blocked and reported. This is your first, last, and only warning.I hate, I hate, I hate being a woman. This is largely why.

What is it like to be a doctor with a disability?

Nine years ago, my two-year-old was convinced he could wield a knife and carve that pumpkin! Eight years ago, I was convinced everything would be alright if I lost my ability to work because I had disability insurance. My name is Dr. Christopher Yerington, a former anesthesiologist, disabled since January 2010 from the loss of use of my left median nerve stemming from a brachial plexopathy. My thumb and index finger on my left hand do not feel much and cannot even pick up a grain of rice from a surface. I loved my career… can’t do it with only one good thumb.I had one excellent private disability insurance policy. I had group policy on top of that, not as excellent and not from a great company. Together they replaced 57% of my previous earnings. Pretty decent financially speaking. There was a price to pay though, all I had to do was never earn a dollar at anything again, ever. The group policy was not clearly written and the company behind that group policy, as a rule, does not answer questions.Sure, you would think attorneys can solve this. They could not and have not to date, seven years later. Finally, I am in Federal Court to determine if I can work and earn a single dollar without losing my benefits. Under ERISA Law, I may not get an answer. I may not be able to earn money without sacrificing more income, but what I can do is educate medical professionals. Speaking with residency programs, doctors and dentists, groups and human resources within hospitals all help me recover from my mistakes and look to my future beyond clinical medicine. The basics EVERY physician should know about disability insurance:1) Get the best private policy you can, given your health and age. Once that is in force, acquire a group policy with your job, group or hospital.2) Place Guaranteed Insurability and Future Purchase Option riders on the policy.3) To my female colleagues, if at all possible, get your private disability insurance before you are pregnant for the first time. Otherwise, future pregnancy-related claims may not be covered.4) Consider a COLA rider (Cost Of Living Increase) rider.5) If your specialty has a patient population that will leave and go to another provider if you are out of work for 12–18 months (this will include 30% of physicians over their careers) or longer than 18 months (this will be 1 in 5 of you, or 20% of physicians during their career), you may also want a Residual rider to bridge the gap while you return to work and rebuild your patient population.6) Should your practice area have a higher psychological disability claims rate, such as anesthesiology, some companies offer riders that may be important when looking at your career in its entirety.7) If possible, attempt to purchase your private disability insurance from an independent broker. Company-specific agents unfortunately have a built-in conflict of interest when proposing disability solutions to physicians. However, if you go with one of the top three companies you will most likely be in good shape.8) Lastly but importantly, pay your private disability insurance with post-tax dollars! (Again, pay your private disability insurance premiums in post-tax dollars out of your personal checking account) This means that the benefit will be paid to you in post-tax dollars and you will not have to worry about a changing federal tax rate in the future. When applying for private disability insurance, the policy issuance guidelines will limit the coverage based on your income and existing coverage. Most doctors get their first disability insurance policy from a group they join or the hospital system they work within. This will be group disability insurance coverage. While some coverage is better than none, existing group disability insurance can limit your coverage when you then go to apply for private disability insurance. Your coverage limit will also be limited by your income. This is why every resident should obtain their personal private disability insurance while in residency.Really consider policies that can grow with your income; those that have a guaranteed insurability and future purchase riders. The Guaranteed Insurability rider ensures that you will be able to buy larger amounts of insurance in the future as your need for coverage increases (i.e. — when your income increases but without having to reapply or go through medical underwriting). A Future Purchase Option is a way a policyholder can increase their coverage over time (as your income climbs, you increase your coverage) but you’ve locked in the rate at a younger, healthier age!By getting the correct private disability insurance policy in place while you are a resident (best scenario) or at least while you are under 45 years old (good scenario); when you change practices, move or form your own practice you will have an outstanding private disability insurance policy in place and in force. Doctors change jobs every 6–7 years on average. That private policy can grow to its maximum with your income and then you will also be able to add a group policy on top of that to maximize your total benefits over your career income.~ChrisDr. Christopher YeringtonColumbus, OhioBio: Retired from clinical anesthesiology by a disability in 2010, Dr. Yerington has turned his love of teaching and service to others to his family, colleagues and community. He speaks and educates medical groups and residency programs about the importance of great disability insurance. Having attended law and business schools, Chris is a perpetual student, currently working on his financial certifications.

What arguments exist for whole life insurance over term?

I’m a “termite” myself after spending over 40 years in the business. But there are a few old basics that term doesn’t offer. If you are young and worry about future purchases of additional insurance due to you future medical condition, you can buy a life insurance policy with a Guaranteed Purchase Option rider. Example: you purchase a $25,000 whole life policy with a $25,000 GPO rider. This gives you the right to buy $25,000 at 3 year intervals to age 40, with no medical questions…it’s guaranteed issue. That can add up to quite a lot of insurability.
