PDF Editor FAQ
How do I report mistreatment by a priest?
That one’s a toughie. If you are an adult, and a priest did something to you that was clearly inappropriate, you’re on your own, hopefully with the self-defense skills to say, “no, thanks man” and maybe smack him a bit. You could tell another priest at the same church/retreat center/institution/seminary/college/etc., but one of two things may be the case: #1 the priest who touched you inappropriately may be an actor of a calibre above those on Broadway, and may have fooled his fellow priests into thinking he’s not only beyond reproach but above suspicion; or #2 more likely, since they have to live with him, they’ll have seen his true colors already, and nod silently, mentally making a tally and wondering how long it will be before he gets in the newspaper for doing something worse. They may tell you to just stay away from him or to report him to the bishop/Cardinal or to his superior. In many cases, they are unable to do anything about him, since whoever is above them (bishop, Cardinal, religious superior) essentially made them live together, whether they liked it or not. Whether anything gets done for or about him depends on the bishop/Cardinal/religious superior. Some who actually believe those under them should be celibate, and they should enforce that, have been known to utilize their own informal sorts of penalties. I am aware of a late bishop who had a religious brother who had admitted to having otherwise normal sex with a consenting adult pretty much doing all the grunt work around his residence for a period of time, then returning him to his religious order. If this is something that happened when you were a minor, and you are now an adult, find out the statute of limitations where it happened, if you choose to tell law enforcement. Keep in mind that I know of at least one Cardinal who has actually actively lobbied the US state he is in not to extend that statute of limitations when it came up before the local legislature! You may also choose to tell the hierarchy whereever the offense occured, if they are offering a settlement deal to people victimized as minors and you choose to accept it. If you are a minor now, or were a minor when it happened, things become a lot more difficult if the hierarchy in the area where it happened haven’t adopted a zero tolerance policy. Generally, most minors would tell their parents or guardians, rather than approaching law enforcement or the hierarchy themselves, depending on their age and circumstances. I am aware, however, that there may have been a lot of parents who didn’t believe it if their children told them about it, or even if they did believe it, perhaps the parents told the Cardinal/bishop/religious superior, and exactly nothing happened. The parent(s) may have approached law enforcement and exactly nothing happened (see the end of this post). Or they may have considered it a solution if the church paid for you to have therapy. Even if you and/or your parents knew that the offender could end up spending months peeling potatoes, scrubbing toilets and grovelling before the bishop, somehow that just doesn’t cut it. Sometimes, it is likely the offender might not even have experienced informal personal consequences of this kind. Having grown up in the New York Archdiocese, I was well aware that “punishment assignments” for priests were a thing. (And not just for those who were sexual offenders of various kinds. It was widely known that those who got on at least one past Cardinal’s shit list also included ideological dissenters and priests who were ethnic/racial minorities.) These punishment assignments usually took the form of the priest in question being sent to a parish/church/institution considered undesirable in some way if you were an average sort of diocesan priest. (In my area, it was a particular late-Victorian church that lacked air conditioning and boasted a large and pious congregation who felt free to ask things of their priests at all hours in a neighborhood that was not rich, white, and other things considered desirable.) To the best of my knowledge, no priests ever engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with minors in my parish, but I heard rumors concerning other priests in other parishes. Apparently, the punishment assignment in an undesirable parish was a not-uncommon tactic of the Catholic hierarchy throughout the world, but the main problem with it was those who offended against minors often offended again in a different setting. I really felt for her when I read an account of a young girl sexually victimized by a priest who told the offender, “I’m going to tell the Cardinal on you!” Maybe she did, not knowing that the Cardinal wouldn’t be likely to do anything other than try to find a less desirable assignment for him. When I watched Spotlight, to me, the most shocking thing came after the movie’s formal ending. When they rolled the credits, they also displayed a list of various places in the world where priests had committed sexual offenses against minors and the number of them who were legally charged. The sad conclusion: every place with a Catholic population has had a priest scandal. You might try telling the Vatican. The Vatican made a gesture, seemingly in the right direction, by creating a department for the protection of minors in recent years. But I have doubts about how much they can actually do from Rome, and have been told by an activist that it was unfunded. My father told me when I was growing up that the way to handle a priest making inappropriate sexual advances was to switch parishes tout suite, “no explanations or goodbyes necessary”. I don’t know how many others were given advice of this sort. On the one hand, if there were ever a priest without an audience, one would think that Rome would realize there was something seriously wrong about him and start looking carefully at his conduct. On the other hand, this may have been one of those things within Catholic culture that kept such offenders off of the radar screen of the civil law enforcement authorities and enabled the priest scandal to reach the proportions that it has. Maybe I should have accounted the opening scene in Spotlight as the most shocking: in a country with separation of church and state, it depicted a police department seemingly in collusion with the Catholic hierarchy; unable or unwilling to arrest priests or engage in enforcement actions against the Church when illegal sexual conduct with a minor allegedly occurred.
Protestant Christians who claim that Roman Catholicism is not real Christianity, what do they think about the Orthodox?
I was raised in a very strict Protestant house. The nearest I can describe it is “Southern Baptist”, although I grew up in Australia and there isn't such a thing here - all the pastors I knew from “good Christian churches” had been trained at some of the leading Southern Baptist seminaries, and to this day there are a lot of things from my childhood that nearly only someone raised Southern Baptist “gets”. Good Christians didn't drink alcohol (that leads immediately to ungodly behaviour), or buy raffle tickets (that's gambling), or dance (too like fornication). Good Christian children didn't read Harry Potter (because it would teach us witchcraft) or watch the Simpsons (because it would teach us to be disrespectful to our parents). And good Christian girls certainly didn't allow themselves to be alone with a guy.We weren't a cult, and for the most part we fit neatly into “mainline” Christianity, but I grew up with a very, very narrow view of what it meant to be a Christian. I knew, of course, that not all Christians were Young Earth Creationists, but it went mostly unsaid that such Christians were only “lukewarm” in their faith. We had just the Bible, and the Bible alone, and our personal relationship with Christ - none of those man-made traditions like some of those lukewarm denominations had. Baptism was only for consenting adults who had been saved and born again.Anglicans weren't even just not “good Christians”, they had their traditions, and their written services so they weren't really worshipping, and they were altogether too much a part of the world (because good Christians are not conformed to the standards of this world). My mother's father was an Anglican priest, and as a child, I was very, very confused by this fact, because I knew he was “an Anglican pastor”, but because he was an Anglican he wasn't a “real Christian”, and I just didn't understand how someone who wasn't a Christian could dedicate his whole life to being a pastor. When I was about seventeen, my mother returned to the Anglican church, and I went with her. I still believed all the things I had been raised to believe, but I loved liturgical worship, and I had to start rethinking some things. Baptism as an adult was all fine and well, I reasoned, if you hadn't been a Christian before, but what about children like me, who couldn't pinpoint a time when they'd become a Christian, but always had been as far as they could remember? Why did we have to be Christians for years and years before we could be baptised? When I voiced this opinion, my grandfather nearly wept - “I'm so happy you've understood this! I was so upset when your parents didn't baptise you!” My father nearly wept, too, but for a very different reason - “Infant baptism is a deception and a heresy which I was delivered from!”And Catholics. Well, if Anglicans and Lutherans were lukewarm, maybe-not-real Christians, then Catholics were at best gullible decieved sheep following a man-made religion, or at worst devil-worshippers. I may personally have withheld judgement as to whether or not the Pope was the Antichrist, but for many around me it was an indisputable fact. Their tradition stood alongside the Holy Bible and sometimes overrode it. They had idols in their churches. They had priests, who stood between God and the common people, even though Christ is the only mediator between God and Man. My position that actually maybe there were some Catholics who were real Christians was not one that could be voiced except maybe, maybe to my mother. Who, being Anglican, was a lukewarm Christian and tantamount to being Catholic anyway. In my first year at university, I attended a Latin mass on campus, and one of the Catholic chaplains gushed about how brave I was to attend a Latin mass, which is intimidating because it's in Latin. I couldn't manage to explain to her that it wasn't the Latin that was intimidating (I'd been to church in languages I couldn't understand before), but getting passed the insurmountable obstacle of it being Catholic. I nearly expected to be attacked by demons during the mass, or for an angel to leap out and tell me I'd just lost my salvation. So what about the Orthodox? I've spent all this time telling you about the cosy little insulated Protestant world I grew up in, and haven't actually answered the question. Well, that's because Orthodoxy did not even appear on my radar. As a child, I might vaguely have been aware of the fact that a Greek kid I knew went to church, but I wouldn't have known that it was any different to the Catholicism of the Italian kid. If I thought about it at all, I might have thought Orthodoxy was just like Catholocism - full of idolatry, man-made traditions, people who had been decieved, and were trapped because of their culture perhaps. As a teenager, I had the vaguest idea of Orthodoxy as a vestigial place where the women covered their heads in church - probably the only thing they got right, I thought. When I left high school, I went to Bible college. It was run by Southern Baptists and fed into Southern Baptist seminaries. We didn't read much of the literature from the early church - it was mostly all the inspiring evangelical preachers and scholars of the last century. Occasionally we dipped into the writings of the Reformers, but even then you had to be wary - Luther might have sparked the reformation, but he was still a Catholic and the church named after him still baptised their babies like pagans. In my final year, I took an elective called “World Religions”, where we spent one week learning about each of the main religions we might likely encounter, visited some of their places of worship to speak to someone, or had one of them come and speak to us. Included on the list was Eastern Orthodoxy. The lecturer described it as “much closer to home”… but still, there it was, on a list of “other religions”.When I did my readings for that week, I remember saying to the lecturer (I had quite a good relationship with him where I felt comfortable expressing my views - I was worshipping in an Anglican church at that point and he was pretty well the only lecturer that didn't find that abhorrent), “It's easy to think they're just like Catholics because they look similar, but when you read about what they believe they're a lot more like us than you think.”We visited an Orthodox church, where the priest himself was a former Lutheran, and my mind was blown by the experience. Not the foreignness and beauty of the worship as so many former-Protestant converts say - as a high Anglican it was all quite familiar to me - but by the way things were explained. Naturally the class asked about icons and about the icon of Mary (idols! Idol-worship!) and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the explanations of both were reasonable, sensible, and arguably Scripture-based. Catholics didn't base their religion on the Bible (or so I believed), so I didn't expect Orthodoxy to be Bible-based, either. But, at the end of the day, I put it all out of my head and just got on with being a good, Bible-believing Christian. Because even if Orthodox did read the Bible, even if maybe they were Christians, even if maybe icons weren't idols, even if maybe Mary was a little bit remarkable and worthy of mentioning now and then… well, Orthodoxy was still foreign. An (Anglo-)Celtic girl like me certainly didn't belong remotely near Orthodoxy, and probably the good probably Christian Orthodox people I'd met would leave the Orthodox church and become a proper Evangelical-type Christian if given the proper opportunity and not bound to it through familial and cultural ties.At twenty-two, I converted to Orthodoxy through Holy Baptism and Chrismation. And that means that at twenty-one, I made a nerve-wracking phone call back home to break the news to my parents.“I see,” my father said. “Well, I'm not happy about this, but you're twenty-one, so I can't stop you. At least you're still going to church, I suppose.”And then, a little bit later - “At least your sister is going to a Baptist church, and that's how we raised her.”He was so proud of me for going to Bible college, being a good, strong, solidly Bible-based Christian. He was so proud of me for remaining a solid, true Christian even after I entered the evil, secular world of university. And now my faith is like a dirty little family secret, only mentioned in game of one-upmanship for disappointing kid stories - the other day, my sister told me that “Well, Rachel is Orthodox!” was brought up in response to someone else's 17-year-old being pregnant - and a few months ago my mother told me that she'd just discovered he'd been telling people I now kissed idols and prayed to dead people. As far as he’s concerned, that wonderful Christian daughter he raised is now a backslidden heretic decieved by a false, man-made doctrine. This answer has been a lot longer and a lot more personal than I intended, but I can't really do the question justice without it being that way. There's a lot more I could mention, about the history of Christianity and Orthodoxy's place within it, but that wouldn't really answer the question - “What do Protestant Christians who claim that Roman Catholicism is not real Christianity think about the Orthodox?”I also want to add the caveat that this isn't representative of all Protestants. I grew up a very strict, very Protestant sort of Protestant, and a lot of Protestants, if they're even aware of Orthodoxy at all, would probably find it a curiosity, perhaps worthy of respect, being such an ancient form of Christianity. But the question was asking about Protestants who claim that Roman Catholicism is not real Christianity, and so that's what I've answered. It's got to be answered by the reactions in a personal story, because most Protestants who don't think Catholics are Christian haven't even really heard of Orthodoxy unless they have a personal connection to it as my family now has. When people I grew up with find out I'm now Orthodox, the reaction is usually befuddlement - I usually have to explain what it is, and those who already have a vague idea usually don't understand why someone who grew up in the light of true Christianity would leave it for someonething different.I also want to make it clear before I finish that I'm very, very lucky, because my family is still supportive of my choice, even my father is to my face, and there are so many Orthodox converts from similar backgrounds whose families don't speak to them any more because of it.
Why do liberals keep generating weird conspiracy theories about Trump?
Among conspiracy theorists Trump and the Republicans are the royal standard.Liberals don’t manufacture many, if any, conspiracy theories because liberals don’t live in fear the way conservatives do so they don’t need to justify their fears with made up stories. It is no surprise they have swamped the Obama administration with them and iced the cake with Hillary conspiracies.I’m going to post a partial list of Obama’s followed by Hillary’s. These lists are far from a complete compilation and I’m not listing the more recent ones that Trump’s campaign has generated:Obama is a secret Muslim: This one began right after he took the stage at the 2004 Democratic convention, with chain emails alleging his "true" religious affiliation. The rumor soon found its way onto the popular conservative online forum Free Republic, and took on a whole new life in the years to come. (It's not.)Obama was funded by a Saudi prince:Another fairy tale courtesy of Corsi: In late-'70s Chicago, Obama secured political and academic funding from a variety of sketchy Arab sponsors, including a Saudi prince. Which may explain why President Obama bowed to the Saudi king when they met in 2009.Obama was born in Kenya: In early 2008, fringe theorists began a push to prove Obama was born on foreign soil and was therefore ineligible to live in the White House.
