Welding shops and hospitals use a lot of bottled oxygen, and reading their safety manuals can be instructive and alarming. For instance, one tells us:"Materials that do not burn in air including fire resistant materials, can burn vigorously in oxygen enriched air or pure oxygen. ... In enriched oxygen atmospheres a common combustible material that most directly affects safety of personnel is clothing. All clothing materials will burn fiercely in an oxygen enriched atmosphere. The same applies to plastics and elastomers." Yikes.At even slightly increased O2 levels, fires don't need much convincing to get started. Another safety manual tells us: "Any air mixture with an Oxygen content of more than 21% is considered oxygen enriched. A content of 23% oxygen in air, only 2% above the normal atmospheric content, has to be considered an extreme fire and explosion hazard. ... Hi! I went through a period of being a pretty big jerk about this. Let me explain why. If you just want the TLDR version, skip down to the next chunk of boldface.I started out life with no religious instruction and no religious belief. I was perfectly happy with that, as were my parents. But some relatives weren't, and I'd occasionally get dragged to church. Even as a kid it seemed weird to me. You're telling me there's 1 (or 3) invisible people in the sky who love me so deeply that they plan to set me on fire if I don't do exactly what they say? And we have to spend every Sunday telling he/them how awesome they are? And part of what he/they want is some ritual cannibalism where we drink god-blood/little cups of Welch's grape juice? What? I didn't want to be there, but I had to go, and I had to pretend to like it.Then, my mom in a stressful period suddenly got religious, eventually marrying a nut who was even more religious. I remember getting extensively interrogated about a video game manual that looked like a spellbook: I was tampering with the works of the devil, you see. And I was forced to have my freshman year of high-school at a small religious school (30 students, K-12). There, a variety of people tried to impose their religious views on me. Guess how well atheists got treated there? Ostensibly because of a missing comma, I received a failing grade for one essay. Actual reason: the teacher didn't like my opinions. Academically, it was a terrible school, but since we were getting our daily allowance of religious propaganda, it was a-ok with everybody.Then I got old enough to start paying attention to politics. Christians had snuck their religion into my pledge of allegiance, and even onto money. They wanted prayer in public schools, because manipulating their own children wasn't enough. They used religion to justify all sorts of laws that they wanted. But despite all the religion, they never struck me as particularly good.For example, they were perfectly happy to see con artists like Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker living lavish lives by taking millions from credulous rubes. I saw a lot of people waving the bible, but very few even trying to live up to core messages like "love your neighbor as yourself" or "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God".Another good example from the time was the Moral Majority. Their goal was basically to bring Christianity into politics. Were they arguing for the poor and downtrodden, as Jesus did? Nope. They were against equal rights for women or gays, and were strongly in favor of a large military and the free enterprise system. With no concern for people who believed differently, they aimed to use the power of the state to force everybody to act in ways that they thought their god wanted. Which, conveniently, was just how they thought people should behave.So summing up, throughout my childhood people tried to cram their Christianity down my throat, and many of those people were rank hypocrites.So was I angry? You bet. I was a jerk about religion for years. Actually, that's not true. I was polite to Buddhists, Jews, Hindus, and Muslims. But Christians, especially of the evangelical sort, brought out the worst in me. I was a scoffer, mocker, and blasphemer, and I was good at it. Few had respected my atheism, so I had no compunction about being frank about what I thought about their beliefs.Over time, I came to realize that there were actually some sincere and thoughtful Christians out there. (For those skeptical, slacktivist is a good place to start.) And eventually I got over my stored-up irritation at Christians. Now I can have a civilized conversation on the topic, but it took me years of hard work.Think this is unfairly put on you?I can see why you'd be bothered that people are taking this out on you. If you'd like to change that:Stop treating atheists like some homogeneous group, like you do in this question. You've noticed a few angry atheists. I'll lay good money that most of the atheists you meet aren't angry at all. You just don't know they're atheists.Speak out against using power to impose religious views. The dominant voice of self-identified Christians in the media is that of people eager to use power to force everybody to do what they want. For example, the school prayer, anti-choice, and anti-gay movements are strongly Christian. If you want people to think that not all Christians are like that, you'll have to show there's an alternative.Discourage nutty evangelism. Those loons with megaphones and signs about burning in hell? Those people handing out Chick tracts? The campus preachers shouting at people trying to get to class? The godbotherers who think it's aces to ring the doorbell first thing on weekend mornings? Those protesters at Planned Parenthood? Ask 'em to knock it off. Or, better, counter-protest.Speak in favor of the separation of church and state. Everybody gets why atheists want this. It'd be nice to hear from a significant number of Christians who want it as well.Encourage your fellow Christians to respect the beliefs of others. Just because you don't go around preaching doesn't mean that a lot of your co-religionists aren't doing it. Bonus points for encouraging them not to indoctrinate children.Basically, if you want to declare yourself a Christian, you're going to have to own some of what your fellow Christians believe and do. That includes what they do to atheists.
