What is the best way to use a five year old Dell laptop that works well?

I am a hobbyist programmer and a network engineer (design, implement and maintain IT infrastructure). I use my old laptop for experimenting with technology/software. Like last week, i finally installed Arch Linux on my old laptop, because I have heard many good things about it.I use the laptop just to testing something, browsing internet, chatting and sometimes play old games (nintento, sega), youtube, etc. I use my old laptop like a desktop computer, by plugging the external monitor.Much of the problem of the old laptops is that you cannot run many modern applications on them. But if you use Linux, you can find many lightweight applications. I have two quite old laptops, one is Acer Aspire 3260 I think it’s from 2006 and the other one is HP Probook 4310s from 2009.Acer Aspire 3260 is an Intel Celeron with 2GB of RAM and HP Probook 4310s is a Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM (I had upgraded the RAM before). I installed Arch Linux and use xfce for the desktop application (and midori as browser on Acer). If you don’t have any experience with Linux, i suggest to install Lubuntu (lubuntu | lightweight, fast, easier). It’s a lightweight Linux and you can still enjoy browsing, music, movie from your old laptop. Good luck!
