It never really occurred to me before moving to Britain just how shaky my knowledge of world history is.“Uh, yeah, the first world war… had… uh, mustard gas. And it was caused by that archduke getting assassinated? And there was a draft or something.”That could have summed up the total of my knowledge about the first world war.And as for the second?“It was… Germany… and Japan and… Italy? Against… Britain… and France… and… I think Russia? And then the US came in later… Oh, and the Holocaust, that happened during World War II.”The sad thing is, I knew more about World War II than World War I because I’d done a bit of reading into it. I knew about the Night Witches, and about Virginia Hall, and Dunkirk and the role Dover Castle played in the defense of Britain. I knew about the failed attempt at invading the Soviet Union in the middle of winter.But that was about it. Beyond the most basic knowledge, I knew… pretty much nothing.One of my British friends knows a lot about WWII thanks to the fact her grandparents grew up during the war or even participated. Hell, one of her grandfathers was a firefighter during the London Blitz and she has stories that could make my head spin.It was painful, really, to find out how much I didn’t know. That the world wars had extended into Africa and the Middle East. That Canada had been involved. That a French general had been put in charge of the Allies in World War I. That so many people died pressed into service just to cart supplies to the soldiers on the front lines.I knew nothing.And it wasn’t just me; one of the smartest and most well-read people I know who went to school with me (as in, the class valedictorian) had knowledge about as extensive as mine.Take a look for yourself.APUSH. And the main thing the two of us remember from that class is that our teacher would do her hair at her desk.Once I realized just how little I actually knew, I bought a couple of books and have been reading about the wars in depth. I want to know. I need to know. Because she and I are more educated than the average American, and we were completely ignorant to basic world history.It’s no wonder America’s education standards are seen as a joke by Europe.

Dad really wanted to answer this one.Dad: Elke has loved history since she could read. It’s a passion of mine as well, we both have pored over biographies and histories together, we go to museums and ruins, we love ancient artifacts. History is the greatest story ever told, and it keeps being created. I have read countless books on the history of the world. On my bookshelf, I have one on the American Civil War, one on World War I, one on the Song Dynasty, I love to read history. So does Elke, it’s one of our bonding activities.As for Jewish history, it’s a particular passion of mine and one I’ve shared with her since she was small. I remember when she was around five or six in Israel. My Elke, she likes to talk and she gets bored very easily. And when she got bored, she’d wander and she was very small and very fast.Elke: I will not confirm or deny this.Dad: So I wanted to attend Mincha (afternoon prayers) at the Western Wall, and my wife was seeing relatives and I have no idea how I’m going to get her to sit still for fifteen minutes. Today, I can give my grandchildren an IPAD and they won’t move for a day, but in the good days, we didn’t have that.So I found this historical fiction book series in a store for my Elke called the “Spirit of My People” about the Shabtai Tzvi false Messiah and gave it to her. She devoured it on the chair next to me, I got to pray and she got hooked on Jewish history. Since then, I always had a history book to bribe her into letting me pray and she learned so much.“Ta, did you know that Don Yosef Nasi almost created a Jewish state in the 1500s?” she’d ask.“Ta, did you know that Jews were expelled in 1291 from England? Why did they expel us?”I gave her books on world history and Jewish theology as well, she just learned like a sponge. It was wonderful to share that love I have with my bright little daughter.Okay, back to me.I’ve always loved world history, and Jewish history fascinated me.I got a degree in it since I have a lot of Advanced Placement credits in high school and I wanted to start research for my novel. (Which I did)Not sure why being an atheist has much to do with that.
