PDF Editor FAQ

Flights: Why would a company pay business class for an employee that costs over $5,000 for one way when for almost any employee that represents a relatively high percent of salary?

Air tickets are a business expense, not a salary component, so comparisons to salary are meaningless. What matters is how much of a difference keeping your consultants in top form makes to your profitability. For deal-makers, investment bankers or C-level executives, the answer is almost always 'a big difference'. For others, this could mean a policy that depends on the duration of the flight, with long-haul flights qualifying for an upgrade since they can take significant time to recover from.Another factor is how niche the skill is, making retention a key focus. Some companies, especially those that are not in the business of frequent travel, find that business class benefits are relatively cheap when amortized over the long periods between occasional travel, but the policy can make employees feel valued despite the sparse opportunities to use it.For consultants, in many cases travel is actually billed to the client and not a part of the fee. Standard contract templates for high-end consulting firms usually include business class travel as reasonable expense. These don't get as much focus during negotiations as the considerable fee. Its not uncommon for such firms to book coach for travel that is not billable.Companies like Google have a novel approach to travel reimbursements. There is a recommended expense level pre-approved for a given route and destination, and whatever you spend below that gets accrued and can be applied against future travel. This could get you an upgrade regardless of your role in the company. Its a great system because it encourages deal-digging, something people rarely do for corporate travel, as a way of funding aspirational travel upgrades, with no impact to the bottom line. That's a win-win.In general, companies are gradually clamping down on business class travel or making them more restrictive, given economic conditions. Airlines are therefore using these to bolster their loyalty programs for highly prized frequent fliers, partnering with hotels, rental car companies and credit card issuers to give them a mileage boost. This means frequent fliers can still do most of their flying in business class using elite status and miles, even if their company doesn't pay for it.

What is a hackathon? What do you do in it? Is it a team event? If yes, what are team sizes?

What is a hackathon? - A hackathon is usually a day long (can be 36 hours, 48 hours, etc.) coding competition where software programmers, developers, designers, etc. come together to build and design something cool.Who can attend a hackathon? - Depends but for the most part ANYONE. Yep, you read it right. Anyone who is interested in computer programming and loves to learn and build cool stuff can attend. If a hackathon targets a specific audience (ex, college students), then obviously only college students are allowed to attend but there are hackathons for everyone. But isn’t hacking illegal? - Haha, my favorite part! The word “hack” has so much negativity attached to it that most people think hackathons are a way to “hack” into something. NOOOO. Hacking is basically building something. It could be anything.Do I need to have programming experience? - NO. You don’t. The organizers usually hold workshops throughout the hackathon for anyone who is new to programming or someone who wishes to learn more about a particular topic. Mentors are also available 24/7. So if you go to a hackathon without knowing what you want to do, that’s totally fine because you will have these mentors at your service to help and guide you.How much do I have to pay to attend a hackathon? - It’s FREE. Almost all hackathons are free of cost. Until now, I haven’t heard of any which charges registration fees. Also, some hackathons provide travel reimbursements. :)Is it a team event? - Yes. So the whole point of forming teams and working on a project gives you the opportunity to work in a real life setting. I mean seriously, that’s how it works in the industry. You have to learn to work with people from different background, different skill set, etc. What better way than a hackathon to get used to it? Teams include a maximum of 4 people. You can work all by yourself but I would highly recommend you work in a team. You’ll learn a lot. If you don’t know anyone at the hackathon, that’s okay. Most hackathons have “Meet-and-Greet” events before the actual event where you get to talk to attendees and look for teammates. Why should I attend a hackathon? - Why not? It’s a win- win situation for you. And here’s why:FREE FOOD.FREE SWAG. (I live for them.)Meet new peopleMeet recruitersNot expensive. Can help land an interview if you are looking for job opportunities.LEARN.What can I hack at a hackathon? - So as I mentioned above, you can build anything. A website, a web app, Android/iOS App, Chrome extension, whatever you want to. Majority of the hackathons do not have “themes” or specific requirements that you need to target. It’s a free environment. you can literally code whatever you want to. But if you’re too focused on one particular theme, say Sustainability or something only related to web development, I’m sure there are themed- hackathons.Trust me, go to one hackathon and see for yourself.New & upcoming hackthons · Devpost and Major League Hacking are good websites to look for upcoming/ past hackathons.Devpost | Apply to software developer jobs in NYC Devpost also has a collection of projects built at previous hackathons. If you don’t know what project to work on, you can take a look at the projects, see what tools they’ve used to build them, etc. That should trigger some thought.Hope this helps. Comment any questions that you might have.I’ll be happy to answer them. :)

How much reimbursement do we get at the time of joining Deloitte as a part of our traveling expense going for training?

Nothing! Unless and untill you are travelling to client place. Based on my experience under deloitte haskins and sells. For your reimbursements it all depends on your tagged manager. Provide the genuine bills and you will get it claimed directly to your bank account. For other expenses like hiring an auto you can fill up an expense form and term under other expense. But traveling from your home to deloitte office there is nothing you will get seperately for travelling.
