I will try to categorize this according to the type of user that the gift recipient is; beginner, intermediate or a connoisseur in the pen world.Beginner: If the recipient is a beginner, i.e. the pen you’ll be gifting is one of the first five pens they own, you can safely bet on one of these pens:Pilot MetropolitanPierre Cardin President. I would recommend buying these from the shop as my experience is that these pens don’t have the best quality control.There are various other pens in this price range but these are some that I feel are more enjoyable than the rest.Before you buy any of these pens make sure that the person does not have the same pen already as these pens are extremely popular and unless the person is completely new to the hobby, he/she has at least one of these.Intermediate: If the gift recipient is an intermediate user of fountain pens and already has their own collection (anything from 5–50 pens) then I would suggest buying a custom pen, or a less widely available pen for them.Kanwrite pens. I would suggest their flex nib pens.Check the fountainpenindia site for handmade pens. These might be slightly above your Rs. 1000 limit, but they’re worth it.This page may also be useful for handmade pens.Connoisseur: For such types of users its best to ask them what they would like best, as they might already have most pens that are available easily. If you can, take the person with you when you go shopping for pens. Otherwise handmade pens that I mentioned above are your safest bet.
