I'm a former Catholic who is now Lutheran. There are differences, but also many similarities. My question back would be why are you considering leaving? Pray about this and talk with people and listen to their answers. I changed to pursue a calling in ministry as a Lutheran pastor (I'm currently in seminary for this). Similarities - when you go to a Lutheran service, you'll feel right at home - both are liturgical churches. Differences - there are some theological differences and you can read about many of them online - Justification, sacraments, priesthood of believers, etc. The biggest difference for me has to do with grace - Lutherans emphasize grace - we humans are incapable of doing anything towards our own salvation - it is all a gift from God. It's a perfect message in a hurting world that continually tries to save itself.Ultimately, this is not something that is easy to do - at least it feels that way. You may experience some rejection from people for switching - be aware of that. Pray for guidance and discernment. If you are intellectual, read portions of the Book of Concord (it's big, so look at areas you are interested in knowing about). If you are a relational person, talk with people - a local Lutheran pastor who is willing to listen to you and help you with your discernment. Also, talk with a Catholic priest to share why you are considering this change to hear what he would have to say.Also, please realize that there are variations in Lutheranism. In the US, you have the ELCA, Missouri Synod, Wisconsin Synod, and a few smaller varieties. There are differences within these synods on several things (women's ordination, homosexuality, inerrancy of the Bible, who can receive communion, etc) Some of these are closer to Catholic doctrine than others. It would be good to learn the differences. You can see these differences with some quick google searches and again talking with people from the different synods.I pray for you as you go through this time of discernment.

They are essentially mutually exclusive assertions. Unless you employ strings of special pleading (and other fallacies), they simply cannot co-exist. The Catholic Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church, United Church of Christ and a few others come close to a reasonably logical assertion: the Old Testament is allegory and metaphor. The creation story is a metaphorical story of the creation of the human soul and its fall. Because our minds simply cannot grasp the medium in which our special souls dwelt, Moses wrote the story using imagery that a corporeal mind can grasp. So the perfect place was the Garden of Eden, the devil as a serpent, we were innocent, the fruit of knowledge wasn’t really fruit, but a metaphor of “choice”, etc. But there wasn’t a real garden. It was a place created by God to commune with his very special creations, human beings. Once we fell from His grace, we left the Garden of Eden for the corporeal existence here on the Earth that we know. On Earth, the bodies dwelt. Life evolved. Our bodies evolved as mammals, and the existence of life on Earth fits perfectly within the known science, it’s the soul that God engineered.I don’t totally hate that. I’m an skeptical atheist and one of my rules is to argue against my strong positions more vociferously than I do the things I believe in. It keeps me honest and softens my edges. So with that, I say, have at it. I cannot argue against that assertion. But the assertion that Evolution by Natural Selection co-exists with the current Protestant assertion that mankind didn’t evolve or that life only arrived on Earth <10,000 years ago is one of the most far-fetched, utterly moronic things I’ve ever heard. Only someone brainwashed by religion believes that kind of drivel.

However, neither is the idea that one is saved “by works.”Unfortunately, the gift of salvation is simple but complex when put in writing. Officially, The Catholic belief is that we are saved by God’s grace through the death of his Only Son, Jesus Christ. Of course the doctrine “Faith Alone” is associated with Martin Luther and therefore associated with Lutherans (who do not share uniform beliefs). Depending on how you see the word “Catholic,” there still may be many who believe it because many people are baptized Catholic, but after a lack of adequate Catechism or a bad experience with the Church, some leave to join a Protestant or non denominational church which believes in a Protestant Bible and in the doctrine of “Faith Alone”(not all those called “Protestant” accept the doctrine however).As Christian unity is imperative and this doctrine concerns salvation, it may be of interest to Christians everywhere that the Catholic Church has worked towards, and achieved, an agreement with representatives of the Lutheran Church which makes “Sola Fide” less of an obstacle (at least for some):Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of JustificationUnity between Christians of all denominations may seem like a dream at times, but it is an imperative and will be a reality according to the Scriptures. Jesus will not come back for a harem, but for His “Bride” the Church.
