are you single or married, or married with kids? if you’re single, you can be very comfortable living in maplewood, summit, westfield, or warren new jersey renting a townhouse or an apartment. in ct., you could look at stamford, westport, darien, westin, etc, and the rentals there. if there are children in the picture, you’re going to have to select town with good school systems but which are cheaper than the one’s listed above, or you can basically live in some enclave of an impoverished city and put your kids in private or parochial schools. Union, New Jersey is convenient but it lacks a direct train station, like maplewood, summit and westfield do, although there is a 1 seat ride on the nj transit bus to manhattan’s port authority. the public school system is sketchy. if you are willing to commute nearly 3 hours a day round trip on a direct train line and want to be right next to the ocean and it’s beautiful walkway, try Long Branch or Oceanport, New Jersey. Somerville, Scotch Plains, Berkeley Heights, with newer townhouses and apartments, new providence, and Bound Brook, New jersey, once again, right on the train line with good school systems, may be options, but you’ll probably end up in a rental, some garden apartment built in the late 50’s or early 60’s. if you want a stately victorian or tudor for 25% of the price of the same home in other suburbs, consider plainfield, around marlboro avenue or prospect avenues, if not the sleepy hollow enclave, a few blocks from the train station, or, less extreme, the western part of north plainfield, which only has bus service to the port authority, but be aware that you’ll have to place your child in either a private or parochial school, although there are hoards of scholarships to apply to if you’re ambitious enough, or at least pay extra money for them to attend the scotch plains public school district, the green brook school district, or even the prominent watchung school district. farther down is metuchen, right next to a major train station, or south plainfield on the border of metuchen by amboy avenue, which is absolutely divine whilst remaining proletariat, as well.

You do not own the public school system, the local fire truck, the police station, the local municipal building, or any of the public works equipment. You certainly don’t own the teachers, police, public workers.But you (or the majority of the people in your town) have voted over the years that all those services and people are necessary. And you (being a user of those services and a resident of the town) are taxed to pay for those facilities and services.Now, I suppose you could try to move somewhere that has no services at all… just not sure how you would get there as there are no roads.Some interesting history in my town (founded in 1666)… little towns broke off and became independent towns of their own as those groups of people voted that they wanted different taxes and services than the people in the larger town. Imagine farmers in outlying areas not wanting to pay for services in the town center, and people in the town center not wanting to maintain lightly used roads out to the farms. The end result is what we call “donut hole” towns… as one example, Metuchen NJ (the donut hole) is completely surrounded by Edison NJ (the donut), but they are two completely separate local governments. All because over a century ago people asked the same question you just did, and thus was their solution.

this depends upon whether or not you have school aged children. bayonne is sort of a remote hick-town in a geographically urban area. it almost feels as if one is in scranton or wilkes-barre, pennsylvania, architecturally speaking. there are a lot of bone-thin guys on adreneline overdrives who are riding around in late model pick up trucks, although egyptian, pakistani, and indian immigrants are becoming more and more prevalent. there are hosts of brand new luxury buildings being constructed that are a quick walk to the light rail and/or have shuttle services to the train station. mayor jimmy davis has a can-do attitude and has really cleaned it up. the problem is the school system. if you cannot afford a private or parochial school or cannot qualify for a free or reduced scholarship, which is quite possible, your child is going to be around some tough elements after, say, the 4th grade level. that and the fact that the light-rail is such as hassle in that it has no direct service to manhattan, and one seat rides to manhattan are only available on the nj transit bus that goes all the way through both jersey city and union city to finally arrive at the port authority bus terminal, and another merely goes to the PATH station at Jersey City’s exchange place, keeps the prices at an affordable level. bayonne is also relatively safe although it borders on the menacing greenville area of jersey city. edison near the metropark would have direct transportation that would be filled with comfortable seats and passengers, on the whole, of a professional caliber. there are trees without having to go to a park, and it is completely safe with a swell public school system. of course, you’ll pay more in rent or via buying a townhouse or a private home. summit is right on the train line, although you would have to switch trains in newark, within the Penn Station terminal, and it is costly, prominent, as well as being considered magazine country with old money architecture. the schools are swell, as well, but you’ll be paying far more than you would be in Edison. it’s directly on route 78, which is a far easier drive to manhattan than dealing with route 287 in edison, where people and trucks tend to drive at irresponsible speeds. on route 78, your ezpass tolls will also, miraculously enough, be far less than they would be taking route 287 and then the turnpike, in addition, and it adds up. good luck. the city of westfield is a carbon copy of summit, as is the city of kearny or harrison being similar to bayonne, and metuchen or south amboy being similar to edison. good luck!
