A few years ago I spent 5 weeks traveling, volunteering, and working in Crete. While I was working at a hostel in the northwestern part of the island, I made friends with a group of travelers- two girls from Latvia, one guy from Saudi Arabia, one guy from Mexico, and another from Romania. We took a day trip together to this beautiful beach in the south called Preveli. On the way back, we were getting really hungry and just stopped at the next place we saw. It was dark out, so at the time I thought it was in what looked to be a small village. The restaurant was pretty empty aside from our group. The waitress explained to us how it works: they bring out an assortment of family style dishes, no ordering, no menu, just whatever the chef had cooked for the day.The dishes started.And they kept coming.And coming.And they seemed to never stop. Each one was more delicious than the last. After the 5th or 6th dish I begin to feel worried, because the cost of all this food must be quite expensive. And I know they have yet to serve us the pairing of dessert and tsipouro (homemade Cretan brandy) treated on-the-house by many restaurants in Crete. But instead of serving dessert at this point, which seemed to be a reasonable point to throw in the towel, they brought more dishes.When the bill came- €10 per person. I was in shock. Just absolutely shocked and couldn’t comprehend how I just ate so much delicious food for just €10!!!By the way- the restaurant is called Taverna Alekos located in / near the village of Agios Georgios in the municipality of Rethymno.Photos not my own

This is Exavier. He is a 4 month old Highland lynx kitten, but he’s more like a monkey.He sleeps on a little blanket between my and my husband’s pillows. Around 7 am, when he senses I first wake up, he comes and sleeps near my head, or neck, or any exposed part of my arm. We fuss around for a little bit until we find the right position and fall asleep for a little longer.The morning must do’s are like so:He runs around the living room for a little, finding things on the ground to swat at, then perches on the windowsill to look outside.When I start filling up my small pot to boil water for coffee, he STOPS whatever he’s doing, and RUNS to the sound of the water, to perch his little paws on top of the pot and watch very intently as the water pours out of the filter and into the pot. This is a very interesting event in the day.Then, I make him chase his toy while I drink coffee.He finds more things to swat at on the floor.I feed him. Up until this point, it’s like food doesn’t exist, but as soon as he smells it, it’s his WHOLE WORLD.If I’m doing any computer work and print something, he STOPS whatever he’s doing, and RUNS to the sound of the printer to watch the paper coming out.When I’m making lunch or washing dishes, he’ll be very, very insistent about trying to jump onto the counter and watch everything I’m doing. I have to push the chairs away because he’s getting really good at leaping long distances. Finally, he’ll settle for climbing up my clothing,, sit on my shoulder, and watch with great focus as I do whatever I’m doing. It’s got to be one of his favorite things of the day.Um what are you up to? Am I invited? Pl…pllleee… pleaaaaaseplease?A ride on the shoulder will occasionally make a stop at the dingle dangles. The dingle dangles are really fun. They make a really good noise.I head out for work. When he hears the jingle of my keys, he runs over and tries to sneak out.While I’m gone, Exavier takes a looooong nap on my husband. At this point, I miss them both so I ask for picture messages. They usually look like this:Our evening routine proceeds:Exavier plays with his toy, finds more things on the floor to push around and swat at. He brings us his toy so we can play with him.He plays in the bathtub and climbs the bathtub curtain.He tries to initiate “tag” and chasing game between us. He loves chasing us around the house, back and forth, back and forth, over and over again!!!He climbs up an down his cat tower while growling. He watches whatever we’re playing on the screen and chases his tail a bit. He settles in for an hour nap, and peaks out the top of the tower when he’s done and asks us to help him down. As if he forgot how to get down! At this point he’s recharged with FULL BATTERY and finds more things on the ground to swat at, wrestles with the couch pillows, and finally climbs the curtains in our bedroom while we’re trying to settle in for bed.“I definitely got to get me some curtain climbing time before bed. This is very important if I want to reach the top one day. I am a strong kitten. I can achieve my dreams. I will conquer the curtains one day. I will reach the top. I will.“
