I asked the same question to my grandparents.They smiled at each other.Did you hear I call her by name? My grandfather asked me.I replied no. Because I never heard him calling her by name.Same way she also never call him by name!I asked because of patriarchal system?He laughed loud. Then I should call by her name!The reason is entire world call us by our names. Family members younger to us anyway call us by their relation with us.We should have something exclusively only between wife and husband. No one else could call us like that. By hearing itself one should come to know they are wife and husband. So no need to misunderstand or to get confused.Like suno ,ji, ri, yemandi in telugu, so many ways in different languages.No other girl is allowed to call him like that except his wife. Same way no man is allowed to call her except her husband. It's matter of uniqueness and convenience in olden days. Adding to that Husband is always atleast minimum two years elder to her. We don't call elders by name.The other day in a mall we met our friend’s son with some friends. We didn't attend his marriage. We haven't seen his wife. After ten minutes talk also we were under confusion. Later he could sense we are thinking a wrong girl to be his wife, introduced her to us. Because all of them are addressing him in the same way. It happened once with my friend’s daughter also. Till she introduce him we could not recognise her husband.Okay! We are modern people with a brush and many colours in our hands. Depending on our narrow understanding and the colour we want to give ,we paint it accordingly with our own definition. Like ego, male chauvinism, patriarchal etc.Moreover we never call any family members by name. Amma,Papa, naanna, Appa, grandma, grand pa, aunt, etc..like this only we address. It's a way of showing respect to elders.Only outsiders call us by names. It's the way they used to address a person with affection and love and respect in Hinduism.Even an unknown person also we call by relation, Bhabhi, chachi, dada, dadi, tatagaru.. like in different ways in different languages.Now we don't want that uniqueness . We want to live with equality in every thing.Recently I was surprised when an young man was referring his dad as ‘Mr Damodar ' while talking to me.Though nothing wrong calling by name, (after all name is kept for that purpose only.)We become more formal and more modern, to the matter of point.But affection and emotional part would be missing in that.One way we tell we all are a big global family, but won't like to connect with each other emotionally or affectionately.And anything related to Hinduism it attracts entire globe though we are confined to a single country in this entire world. They would be after it with magnifying glass.

Calling girl child as paapa.In both my parent's families there were many girl children.So it is periya paapa for the eldest, nadu paapa for middle one and chinna paapa for the youngest.If there are more than three a lucky middle one gets called by name. In my father's family the second girl child was called by name.
