Caution : Mega rant ahead !Hate is a strong emotion. I don’t hate but certainly dislike a particular thing.No, I’m not talking about the infrastructure, curriculum or administration - all of which , I agree, need a massive overhaul.I’m talking of an equally malicious yet shrouded phenomenon, of which almost all of us are guilty of at times (me, included).Through my four years of college, I realized, there are basically two types of students - the whiners and the winners. All of us exhibit various degrees of these two classes.Simply put, the whiners are those who ask what the college is doing for them. The winners, on the other hand, ask what they can do for the college.While you were lamenting the lack of good sports facilities, someone won laurels for us in Inter NIT sports meets. [1]While you were grumbling about outdated class curriculum, few Motis took it upon themselves to teach their juniors Coding/Web Dev/Android/Robotics so that they can build an impressive resume.[2] [3] [4] [5]You crib about the proxy servers going down frequently, someone eased the process for you by designing a server uptime portal.[6]While you complained about delays in exam results from the comfort of your air conditioned home, few boys braved the Allahabad heat to ensure there are no discrepancies in the grade sheet.[7]You bitch about sexism and male chauvinism in college while sipping your coffee, someone actually took the pains to approach the Alumni assoc. regarding the same.[8]You don’t share a KB of data on DC++, while someone has his external hard disk connected to the system day and night.[9]You crib about the falling ranking of the institute, but couldn’t find the time to fill the ranking questionnaire posted on our college website.[10]You whine about MNNITians lacking time and creativity, some students already have their startups up and running.[11]While you protest about the choice of celebs invited by organizers during fests, few students work overtime, often paying from their own pockets, to ensure the show runs smoothly.[12]You moan about the pre -placement talks being soporific, few people worked thanklessly to call those companies on campus. [13]Armchair activists like you talk about child labour and pollution, but can’t lend a helping hand to some clubs striving to bring a positive change.[14] [15]You are ready to run back home at the drop of a hat, while some people spend their weekends over activities like quizzing, dramatics and photography.[16] [17] [18]If you have read so far, please take a moment out to evaluate into which of the two categories you fall.More often than not, the answer is going to be the latter category.If every student pledges to leave Motilal in a place better than the one they found it in, the number of whiners and the reasons for whining will go down substantially.You don’t need to be the Festival Secretary in order to become a ‘winner’, start small, every act counts. Go donate your old rusty cycle (that you never use) to the guard. Try your hand at dramatics to get over your stage fear. Become a mess secretary and change the aloo dish that everyone despises.If you can’t be a part of the solution, at least don’t be a part of the problem.Groom yourself and also the college. There may be problems. I think it just depends on your foreign nationality and life orientation.For me, I had some issues with student diversity in my course (Mechanical Engineering) and the way I was indirectly treated in my faculty and even the university. In my course at the time of enrolment up to graduation, we were only two black african students in my course (and few I can count in the whole faculty) and I think myself and my other fellow national were looked down upon which included receiving not-so-good grades. The faculty staff are bias with grades, there is a bit of racism in the university and the staff usually don’t help undergraduate students well with their course problems. At least my experience with 3 faculty tutors and supervisors shows that they are more concerned about their research grants and work that regularly helping undergrads. The only set of people that benefit so well from their supervision are postgrads and PhD students - I guess that’s the reason why it is a research intensive university and it means you are mostly on your own. The department of Mechanical Engineering had the lowest student satisfaction during my time there (2011–2015) based on an internal survey data of all engineering departments in the faculty of engineering - and this they should improve on. Many of my foreign colleagues left after Bachelors (even when they initially signed up for a 4-year integrated masters degree) and some even pulled out to study another course during the Bachelors phase of the program.Bristol university is a reputable university all over the world but I think what makes them high ranking in university tables is the amount of research they do and also some of the respectable alumni they have produced over the years.Nothing to totally worry about. Just do the best you can in your proposed course to get awesome grades, always liaise with people (say in a group) so as to pull heads together & solve problems and regularly be proactive with staff if you have any subject issues (as they are often unavailable when you need them at certain crucial periods). I know these are obvious but you need to take them so seriously at this university most especially at the engineering faculty.

On the whole it is not true, but in an individual case, it might be.There are some 378 engineering faculty. Some will be very nurturing, others will be less so.I am regularly amazed at how little thought people give to picking their PhD supervisor. You are picking your mentor and your boss for the next few years, and unlike a job, it is very hard and expensive to quit. Therefore, you want to pick someone who genuinely cares, and there are a lot of really dedicated caring faculty at MIT (and most other schools). And yet every school, there are some staff who care a whole lot less.MIT has not established its reputation by trashing grad student education. Indeed, MIT does extremely well on most surveys of grad student satisfaction. However, is it certainly possible to have a really awful experience at MIT (or at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford etc.).
