Was Friedrich Nietzsche a fun person to be around?

While Nietzsche was not a fun person, he was very formal and very polite with others, especially those whom he did not meet before or did not know. Of course, Nietzsche was sociable with those few of his surroundings, such as his professors or his college students. Other than that, Nietzsche was somehow, humorless, ponderous, and extremely an introvert person. When Nietzsche went to the gymnasium his whole world was overturned. Here boys were no longer mute and hollow vessels, to be stuffed with predigested learning, but human beings whose approach to separate entity was recognized. Teaching became less the administration of a necessary medicine and more sharing of a delightful meal. History does not record the name of the pedagogue who taught Nietzsche at the Naumburg gymnasium, but he must have been one who ill deserved his oblivion. He fed the eager, inquiring mind of his little student and made a new boy of him. The old unhealthy, uncanny embodiment of a fond household’s impossible dreams became more likable and more human. His exclusiveness and fastidiousness were native and ineradicable, perhaps, for they remained with him, in some degree, his whole life long , but his thirst for knowledge and yearning for disputation soon led him to the discovery that there were other boys worth cultivating: other boys whose thoughts, like his own, rose above misdemeanor and horse-play. With two such he formed a quick friendship, and they were destined to influence him greatly to the end of his youth. Once a week there was a meeting, at which each of the three submitted an essay or a musical composition to the critical scrutiny of the others. They waded out into the deep water. One week they discussed “The infancy of Nations,” and after that, “The Demonic Element in Music,” “Napoleon III” and “Fatalism in History.”Nietzsche was a brilliant and spectacular student and soon won a scholarship at Pforta, a famous and ancient preparatory academy not far away. Pforta, in those days, was of a dignity comparable to Eton’s or Harrow’s. It was a place for gentlemen to acquire Euclid and the languages in a decent way, and not an arena for gawky country philosophers to prance about in. But Nietzsche, by this time, had already become a frank rebel and delight in elaborating and controverting the doctrines of the learned doctors. Nietzsche began to believe in his own mental cunning, with a sincerity which never left him, and, as a triumphant proof of it, he drew up a series of syllogism designed to make homesickness wither and die. Thus he wrestled with life’s problems as his boy’s eyes saw them. Nietzsche became a bit too sure of himself and a bit too arrogant for discipline. He pronounced his high curse and anathema upon geography and mathematics and drawings. The result was that when he went up for final examination he writhed and floundered miserably and came within an ace of being set down for further and more diligent labor with his books.. Only his remarkable mastery of the German language and his vast knowledge of Christian doctrine—a legacy from his pious childhood—saved him.The Nietzsche that went up to the University of Bonn was a young man with a touch of cynicism and one not a little disposed to pit his sneer against the jurisprudence of the world: a young man with a swagger, a budding moustache and a head full of violently novel ideas about everything under the sun. In the youth of every man there comes over him a sudden yearning to be a good fellow: to be “Bill” or “Jim” to multitudes, and to go down into legend . This melancholy seized upon Nietzsche his first year at Bonn. He frequented the theatres and posed as a connoisseur of opera bouffe, malt liquor and the female form divine. He went upon students’ walking tours and carved his name upon the mutilated tables of country inns. He joined a student corps, bought him a little cap and set up shop as a devil of a fellow. His mother was not poor, but she could not afford the outlays that those ambitious enterprises required. Friedrich overdrew his allowance and the good woman, no doubt, wept about it, as mothers will, and wondered that learning came so dear. Nietzsche was not designed by nature for a hero of pot-houses and dueling sheds. The old fastidiousness asserted itself-that queer, unhealthy trait which, in his childhood, had set him apart from other boys, and was destined, all his life long, to make him shrink from too intimate contact with his fellow-men. The touch of the crowd disgusted him. The gloomy spinner of fancies triumphed over the university buck. Nietzsche resigned from his student corps, burned his walking sticks, forswore smoking and roistering. The days of his youth—of his carefree, merry gamboling—were over. Hereafter he was all solemnity and all seriousness. “From these early experiences,” says his sister, “there remained with him a life-long aversion to smoking, beer-drinking and the whole biergemuthlichkeit (comfort, coziness).

What is it like to attend West Point?

This is definitely a loaded question and one that you will receive mixed responses based on each cadet’s point of view. There are also several books, magazines, and promo videos that touch on this as well. I will of course give my take on it. I went directly from my public high school in California, with a local Congressional nomination and was not recruited for sports. On the same token, I felt ill prepared when I got there because my peers were all very intelligent and we all came from different parts of the country. There are six typical routes to get into West Point: (1) Legacy where your parent is a grad; (2) Recruited athlete; (3) High school student; (5) USMAPS preparatory school; (6) Prior service enlisted Soldier.Attending West Point, is just about everything I thought and hope it would be. Daily schedules vary based on class rank. I’ll give a quick blurb on each class. Plebes (Freshmen) have by far the most difficult schedule, because they are getting used to the system and are also responsible for doing several duties and do not enjoy the same freedom as the upperclassmen.A PLEBE’S DAYPlebes wake up before 0500 to ensure that they get ready for the day. This involves a slew of duties and responsibilities that include making their beds, shining shoes, cleaning their rooms and wiping their sinks dry. They are also responsible for morning duties broken down by platoons (calling Minutes, laundry, latrines, newspapers) as well as catching up on daily news and trivia to entertain, er I mean educate the upperclassmen during breakfast.Calling Minutes - Basically serving as an alarm clock for the upperclassmen giving them a count down from 10 Min to 2 Min with the uniform of the day.Laundry - Collecting all dirty laundry bags outside of the upperclassmen rooms and bringing it down to the sallyports.Newspapers - Bringing the NY Times bundle up and dropping off a paper in front of each room and cleaning out each trash can that’s placed outside the rooms.Latrines - Self explanatory, making sure the bathrooms are clean. The plebes will go out to morning formation and then march to Breakfast where they will sit at assigned Company tables. At meals, Plebes will provide knowledge, jokes, and news to the upperclassmen. They will also announce and pour drinks memorizing all of the table mate’s ice and drink preference and also cut the famous desserts. Plebes don’t have to sit with company mates at dinners and can choose to eat in their rooms as I often did except for Thursday evenings which was mandatory. Those nights everyone wears Dress Grey which is quite uncomfortable and aside from duties, Plebes are typically expected to put on skits at their table, which is like a very bad version of “Whose Line is it Anyway.” It makes for great stories and laughs though for years to come.During the day, Plebes will attend classes which is sort of like college except they are all mandatory so you can’t skip a class, much less forget to bring your textbook otherwise you will receive “hours.” This equates to dressing up in your best uniform on a weekend and wasting your time parading back and forth in a courtyard while friends get to go to the mall or catch a movie.I forgot to mention that Plebes also take PE which include Boxing, Gymnastics and Swimming “aka Plebe Drowning”. No other school makes these courses mandatory except West Point because it teaches cadets to face their fears. These were the most difficult classes I ever took at the Academy besides Discrete Dynamics Math course. In the afternoons, all cadets are expected to partake in Intramural sports if they are not in a club or varsity sport. On alternate days there is drill to prepare for the upcoming weekend parade. In the evenings, there may be a lecture in Robinson Auditorium, otherwise it’s dinner and homework before lights out.YUKS AND COWSThese are the sophomores and juniors, respectively. Their days looks a lot like the Plebes, minus all of the duties. Their academic classes are more rigorous and they have to worry about term papers and ensuring that their assigned plebes are doing well academically. It’s a great built in system of Big Brother and Big Sister to ensure that everyone succeeds.FIRSTIESThe only difference for the seniors is that they get to carry sabers at drill and they have their cars on campus allowing them to drive off post Friday evenings and the weekend. That in a nutshell is life at the Academy, but no overnight visit or video even compares to actually experiencing it day in and day out. The common thought is that all cadets want to see the Academy in their rear view mirror after graduation. Although I was eager to graduate and start my life as a second lieutenant, I really appreciate the friendships I made and am thankful for the experiences I went through to make me the person I am today.

Comments from Our Customers

Wanted to balance out the negative reviews. I bought music conversion software from CocoDoc. When the software had problems I contacted them and they told me it had been discontinued. Then they gave me a free lifetime license to a much larger and more expensive piece of software that can do the same job (and much more). VERY impressed with their customer service.
