I was working as a veterinary nurse and getting along great with everyone. This happened about a year after I started working there.Two things. One, I checked a dog’s stool for worms, the stool had worms, the doctor prescribed medicine and I was told to call the client and tell her to stop by and get the dog’s meds. I left a message on the machine. But it was time to go home.So, I put a sticky note on the patient’s file asking my colleague to please follow up and make sure the owner got my message.The next day, the receptionist slaps the file on my desk and said “You should have called the client about this.” I told her that I did. I said “Do you really think that if I know somebody was sick and needed medication I wouldn’t call that person and tell them?” She said yes, she thought I would.I picked up the file and found the Post-it was inside the file and I showed her the note: “Please soandso, Rover has tapeworms. I left a message for the owner but I need you to follow up because I couldn’t reach her.”I showed it to the receptionist and she said I should have put it on the outside of the file and at least told someone. I told her I did both those things and she knows me well enough to know I would never let a dog suffer a minute longer if I could prevent it. The damage was already done.The entire hospital “knew” what I did. When I next saw my co-worker, I asked her what happened. “Oh right, I saw that but I was in the middle of a blood test so I put it aside for later and put the post it inside and forgot about it. So sorry.”She really was sorry. We both went to the doctors and explained the mix up and I took the blame, saying I should have notified someone to notify soandso there was a message, she also took the blame, saying she had forgotten. But that’s not the worst of it. I was so insulted to think my colleagues thought that little of me that I would do such a thing.Second time: So the veterinarians that own the hospital are married. We became pretty close friends and so one night I invited them to dinner. When they got there, they were looking around my house and commenting on this or that.Then, the wife points to a picture and says “Oh my God, Is that a knock off?”Explanation: George Rodrigue is an artist who was known as the Blue Dog artist. His paintings are very, very expensive and at the time you couldn’t get a lithograph or replication of the original paintings. However, as a special favor to the Broward County Humane Society in Fort Lauderdale, he gave them one to replicate. Anyone who donated $200 or more got a lithograph. I had done so and put the picture in a very expensive frame.I told her that story, and she didn’t even blush. No apology for the obvious insult. She didn’t say “Oh I didn’t think you had the money to buy a George Rodrigue painting,” but I know she was thinking it. I think if that were me I would be curious too. But I’d be a lot more tactful and ask “Oh, isn’t that a Blue Dog painting? It’s lovely.” Had she done that, I would have told her how I got it anyway.I didn’t take it all that hard. I mean, our house was modest, worth maybe $300,000 and my husband is a lawyer, albeit a public defender so he works for the government. I guess I can understand why she was confused as to how we could have the money for such an expensive painting. But I did feel pretty bad that she thought I would illegally buy a knock-off. I'm sorry sweetheart I don't know of one place that gives free animal care to owners, particularly now. But perhaps a cat rescue organization can help you by taking it in.You may have to drop your kitty off, though at the Broward County Humane Society near the airport, or Animal Control also close to the airport.Some of the kitty rescue places are no kill shelters if you are worried for your cat's life. Very humane and wonderful volunteers and workers there! Call 211 if you don't know how to reach anyone.
