Tom Baker is probably to this day the actor most closely associated with the lead role in Doctor Who. He held the role for seven years, longer than any other actor (not counting those who were technically still the official Doctor whilst the show was off air).Baker was very aware of his popularity in the role, and after a couple of years cottoned on to the fact he could get a pay raise simply by threatening to quit. So at the end of every production run Baker would go to see the producers complaining that he was tired of the role, and that he wanted a new challenge and that he didn't think he could go on any more. And the producers would respond by begging him to stay and offering him a better deal. Baker would then ‘reluctantly’ accept and go back to the job he was actually very fond of quite a bit richer.In 1980 John Nathan-Turner took over production of the show. Turner had already been working on the show for three years, so Baker had every reason to suspect it was business as usual. Unfortunately, Turner didn't have a particularly good working relationship with Baker, and was only too happy to accept Baker's resignation. So when Baker turned up at his office bemoaning his unhappiness with the role, instead of being handed a cheque, he was politely shown the door.Baker spent a single unhappy year under Turner before the role was handed to Peter Davison. Although he clashed with Turner constantly and was immensely critical of his final season, he later acknowledged he'd stayed in the role too long, and should have left a year earlier and given Turner a clean break. He has for many years now been a genial and enthusiastic spokesperson for the show.So whilst he wasn't quite fired in the traditional sense, Baker was removed from a job he had no intention of leaving because of his own behaviour.

It may be worth noting that Peter Tatchell, one of the UK’s most prominent LGBT rights campaigners, spoke out in defence of Christian bakers who didn’t want to make a cake supporting gay marriage, and said it was the thin end of the wedge and that if firms could be forced to produce publicity material they didn’t agree with, somebody would be able to force a Jewish baker to produce a Nazi cake.

Is it a service that’s open to the public? Like, is there a storefront with pre-made goods, and the baker won’t sell them to Christians? Then the Christian should sue for discrimination. That lawsuit shouldn’t really be a big news story. The hype is what they crave, and people sometimes seek out people they know disagree with their morals for the purpose of creating a media hype. Lawsuits work well without news cameras, too.Or, is the baker refusing a commission to create a product specifically for a Christian ceremony? Then find another baker that will. You can’t force someone to create a product that is specifically for something they have a moral and/or religious opposition to.
