I recommend you take that first.In my experience, AP Computer Science A will be very difficult for anyone with little exposure to programming. Most of my students had completed a preliminary course we offered, computer science 1-Pre AP, but it was permissible to enroll in AP Computer Science A if he/she was at least a sophomore and had completed Algebra 1. There are some exceptions in students who had on their own done extensive study in a programming language. Sometimes, I notice immediately that a very few students (even freshmen) enrolled in the pre-AP course were clearly prepared for the A class, and I immediately had them transferred appropriately.Some students who have met the prerequisites and have even received a high previous GPA in high-level math classes struggled in Computer Science A. Computer science programming is a different kind of course than most students are used to. In most courses, evaluation is handled by a human teacher who can evaluate close-to answers and give partial credit. While the same is often true in formal evaluation (tests) by the teacher. The real test is evaluated by the computer — there the answer is only either right or wrong and many have great difficulty with that. It depends. Most highly competitive universities have regional admissions officers, and it’s their job to know the rigor of both your high school classes and DE options.Depending on what’s available where you live, sometimes the AP courses are the most rigorous course options and in other cases the DE courses will be more challenging. Typically, if one option is more challenging that “reputation” is known by students, guidance counselors, AND college admissions officers.Where we happen to live, the AP courses are generally more challenging than the DE courses offered by the two closest colleges to our high school, and I don’t know any student from our specific area who has attended a T20 university completing a mostly a DE schedule in high school. However, a huge exception is Georgia Tech (which is located about 35–40 minutes away from our high school) offers two DE classes that are exceedingly challenging - way harder than most AP classes - and only available to students who apply and are accepted to participate. That program has always been virtual learning for high school students, but pre-covid (and maybe it still is, I’m not sure) used to be simulcast live from a college classroom where currently enrolled GA Tech students were attending the same class in person. We know students who took DE classes through that program who later went on to attend GA Tech and also T20 universities Including Ivies, but the majority of their other classes in high school were still through the AP program. I do think that the GA Tech DE classes are fairly well known, and can help with admissions particularly in STEM based programs.Thus, the answer likely varies by the strength of the institution offering your DE classes versus the strength of the AP classes in your specific high school. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely someone on Quora knows the answer for where you happen to live. A decent high school guidance counselor should be able to help you evaluate the best choices for your goals.

Please just take a look at the problem sets of several of the typical Freshman's class materials. Even at the introductory level, classes at MIT tend to be much harder than the typical AP's curriculum. And these introductory courses are often pre-requisite for more advanced courses.MIT has always been a very "rational" place. Getting Advanced Placement means you skip a class, which may be a pre-requisite for the next higher class. Many Freshmen tends to have trouble adjusting to the “fire hose” course load at MIT, and missing the pre-requisite knowledge means they may have a really hard time catching up.IMHO, getting 5's on AP are not the same as mastering the materials taken in the introductory classes. More than 95% of MIT first year students entered Freshman class with 7-12 APs, and so MIT has plenty of experience with evaluating the APs. I personally know a few students entering the Master’s program who had to retake first year undergraduate class to make sure they got the background. And back when I was at MIT, you can always ask to take a test to skip the pre-requisite. MIT would bend over backward to accommodate you, just make sure you pass :-)
