What are the most popular applications using blockchain?

Blockchain is finding interesting use cases in multiple areas. Here are some interesting use cases that I know of -Cross Border Money Transfer - Bitcoins, Ripple, etc.ID Verification - Velix.IDSharing/Rental Economy - ShareRing , RentalCoinsGaming - CryptoKitties , Fair.GameWhile the popularity of each of these blockchain based applications are growing and is expected considering the value that it brings, I was particularly amazed to see blockchain uses for building blockchain based games.Imagine being able to own digital assets like digital land, digital buildings (movie theatres, airports) using crypto-currencies on the blockchain network.Fair City is an amazing city simulation game developed by Fair.Game is easy to play, but a lot has been accomplished. Here you can buy land, develop land, build buildings, and jointly develop cities. In the end, it will be retained as a digital asset leveraging blockchain technology. What is Fair City? The game is played in cities, and each city consists of 500 individual lands. Players need to develop the cities by acquiring lands, exploiting lands and building constructions. After the cities are developed, they will be permanently retained as assets via block chain technology.Once the player gets the land, the player has to develop the it. The initial development resources for the land start with 10 points. As the land is developed each time, the development resources will be reduced. After the development resources are exhausted, the land can no longer be developed. The development of land increases the prosperity of the land, and the degree of its prosperity is divided into 5 levels: far-off, normal, lively, prosperous and very prosperous.Players can't choose the type of building, the building will be automatically built, which is solely determined by the prosperity of the land. The higher the prosperity of the land, the better the building that will be built. Players can choose to demolish the building and rebuild it.Each building has different values, and the landmark building has the highest value. After the construction is completed, the player can choose to keep the land and buildings as their own assets collection on block chain, or sell it to the owner of cities in exchange for high returns.Land and buildings can be traded between players, and players can set the prices freely. All 500 pieces of land in the First City of the Fair City got sold out within 10 mins. A new city will be listed soon as per this announcement -I own my own piece of land and I have built a Food City on it. It earns me FAIR tokens and I can also list on the market to sell it to earn FAIR tokens or ETH tokens. It is fun and it is rewarding :)Here is my Food City in the Fair City -

What are the things I should know before applying for a PhD in the USA?

Being a PhD student in USA myself, I encounter this question quite often from my juniors. I would like to answer this question drawing facts from my own experiences and several of my friends.1. Know what they want: You might be a 'big-shot' in your home university and based on that you might think that you can crack all the top schools of US, but unfortunately things don't work that way. I have seen plenty of high 9 pointers satisfying themselves with second-tier grad schools and at the same time also seen plenty of barely 8 pointers landing up in top ten. So where did the first category went 'wrong' and what 'extraordinary' did the second category do? The answer is most good US universities look for qualities in the applicants which can foster their research. So, unless your profile meets that requirement, even academically extremely strong persons can get rejected. The best indicator of this is having sufficient research/internship experience. A publication or few will make an application really strong. On the top of that, good, detailed and lucid recommendation letters are a must. This is not something directly in the applicant's hand but one may try to develop a very good impression (of research skills strictly!) with their referee from the beginning. Sometimes, the reputation and personal connections of the referee does matter, but a recommendation letter bearing the aforementioned features from a "not-so-famous" referee can also make good impact.2. Know what you want: Be very clear about the area you want to work on in PhD and how it is related to your research/academic experience. If there is an interview, this is typically the first question. Secondly, it is important to know if the university you are applying to is good in that area and whether more than one professors are working on it. Even if you are admitted, it's not guaranteed whether the professor of your choice will agree to take you. So, know your options before you apply. Thirdly, some areas are extremely competitive and some areas are not. If your resume is not so strong but you are interested in a not so competitive area, you can think of applying to some of the high ranked universities. Lastly and most importantly, know whether the area you want to work on will be impactful in the near future and generate enough career/job options. Working on stuff like "physics of black-hole" or "origin of life" sounds cool but at the same time can be very academic under most circumstances.3. Importance of Standardized tests scores: The very first question I hear from most aspiring applicants is that what are the 'cut-offs' in GRE/TOEFL for a given university or US universities in general. People spend months preparing for these standardized exams, if not cramming the entire English dictionary. The question is, is this much labor justified? I'd say, the scores of GRE/TOEFL are somewhat overrated. They serve as a sort of 'cut-off' for the applications, but not significantly more than that. Unless the score is something like 340/340 or somewhere close by, it doesn't really make much difference. 315 and 325 will have nearly the same impact. However, the importance of areas which we are not quite aware of are the Analytical Writing Section in general GRE and Speaking Section in TOEFL. The former reflects one's command in logical thinking and precise expression, and the latter reflects one's ability to communicate - both of which are very valuable skills required throughout PhD life. Moreover, for science and engineering students, Quant score matters more. Recently, the scores of Subject GRE are considered to be extremely important although very few universities demand it compulsorily.4. Funding scenario: This is something which is an 'under-the table' fact and not easy to know always but contacts in the universities of choice might come helpful. The US universities function differently in many ways than universities of the rest of the world. There is a growing disparity between 'rich universities' and 'poor universities' and more appropriately 'rich professors' and 'poor professors'. It is typically the professors with more funding tend to (or are allowed by the university) accept more students.5. Look around too! How is the city where the university is located? This is least considered criteria when it comes to choosing universities but trust me this is very important too. Most people consider rankings first but it's not the only thing to consider. PhD is a 5-6 year affair and if the place is inhospitable or unkind for you, it'll be very difficult to maintain the stamina. Climate, cost of living, food, city life, local transport, places to see around, demographic features - all these seem to be minor factors at the first glance, but once you get somewhere, they will matter a lot!So, clear your mind, think carefully and get ready to go!
