A course in jigs, tools & fixtures could get you a job in any manufacturing industry. (If they have vacancy for one in their tooling department) A good point to work out for you if you are a fresher is that some manufacturing facilities prefer the new tooling ideas as you would have studied the latest trends in engineering and the said course provided you sell yourself well.A course in piping or valves could get you a job in the oil & gas industry. (However, wait for the crude oil prices to rise before you try this option.)A course in maintenance (TPM) could get you a job in any industry or facility as maintenance is required everywhere. And the funny part? In your actual work all you have to do is follow the manufacturer’s manual which can be easily found online. You just need your engineering knowledge to decipher the manual.I would tell you to steer away from the easily available courses - design. Then you make your resume sound like you are a draftsman which does not even require an engineering degree and your chances of climbing the corporate ladder vanishes.A course in Supply Chain Management would help you get a job as a buyer in any of the engineering projects/plants/factories.A course in lean manufacturing could help you get a job as production supervisor/manager in a plant.A course in 6sigma/TQM or related quality concepts may get you a job in Quality Control in a factory.More than courses, what could be more helpful to you are internships or traineeships, even if they have to be done at minimum stipends or none at all. Many a times you can convert it into full time employment or even if not, other companys would appreciate your real world experience instead of just another theoretical course while considering hiring you.If you are bent on doing courses, see a job opening that has a window to apply for a month or so. Go for a 7 day course on that topic, and then apply for a job. If you are already a knowledgable engineer, a 7-day refresher would do.Most of the jobs are of recurring type. So, understand the present scenario requirement and go for a thorough six month course if you didn’t take your engineering college seriously. Then apply for those jobs and win them! (I know people who have successfully done this)

The committee of secretaries, an apex body of Indian bureaucracy has given a direction to corporatise the department. But the question begs, why? One big reason, given the way the previous governments and also the present one has gone, is that the Governments squander away all the revenue it earns from the taxes the people pay, on populist schemes designed to fetch it votes leaving no money for works of public good. PPP is the buzz word which implies that there will be no budgetary support from the Government side and hapless public will pay for the public infrastructure at compounded rate. CPWD as it structured now does not fit in the current scheme of things and therefore the proposal of corporatization and the expectation of fending for itself. NBCC already exists as an arm of the Government and one can see that lately, bulk of major works of the Government have gone to it at the cost of CPWD. a visible example is Redevelopment of East Kidwai Nagar Housing scheme in capital city of Delhi being built by NBCC with zero budgetary support. and mind you it is not PPP. Funding will come from indirect Government resources other than central budget.There is considerable difference in the objectives and mandate of CPWD and NBCC. while the latter was formed to be a construction agency out and out the former has a wider role, that of project management. Over the period, however NBCC too has changed its role into that of project manager almost similar to that of CPWD thereby coming into direct conflict with CPWD. Besides its role of a a construction agency, CPWD’s big contribution has been in laying down the code of practice, manuals of work and schedules which are a touch-stone for the management of public works anywhere in the country. CPWD’s role in nation building has been non-commercial and in the instance of a change in the role, given its work culture and less than desired efficiency despite having the top bracket technical pool, how it will perform, is a question to be debated threadbare. Large PWD like departments in East bloc countries have died down and risen again as corporates.Now, has CPWD brought it on itself. Its working over a last decade or so does not inspire confidence even in its masters, the government. Its Teeth to Tail ratio is going in reverse reflected by the ratio of its expenditures on Direction and Management to the expenditure on Executive actually engaged in productive work, pulling down the efficiency. CPWD will continue to go downhill unless it reinvents itself and that can come about through introspection coupled with retrospection.
