Critiquing is an art. Look at the narrative elements, structure, style, and so forth. Think about what kind of impression they made. Empathize with the author to some extent to see if their intended effect was achieved. See how they have changed across publications. Compare to other writers. Also, read further essays of the same type. Or try to extend it to technical communications which need to be compelling. This becomes rhetorical, obviously, since editing will be required for producing this piece.

Rhetoric is the art of persuasive writing or speaking.When you analyze an essay it is typical to start with did the author persuade you and why?It is not required to use your opinion about the essay, but it often can be one idea for an analysis essay.The analysis part of an analysis essay can also examine the thesis, the arguments presented in support of that thesis, and the data that supports the thesis, and how the author wrote their essay.Some typical questions that can be asked include:How much of a topic area is covered by the thesis? An example of this is one against abortion, was the thesis all inclusive of any abortion or were exceptions made? Your thesis could point to exceptions, or point out how the exceptions had no bearing or a mix of both. It could take the opposite view and look at births instead and how the evidence would look in those cases.The next step is to look at the arguments. Were the arguments enough to convince you or were there arguments that were left out that you would make? Were the arguments based on logic or emotion?A final way to look at the author's rhetoric is to examine their data used to support their logic. Is the data all-inclusive or did they miss something? Did they provide statistics or use a personal experience? Did the muck with the supporting data to make it look good?One last area to examine is the author's style. Is it logical? Are emotional triggers used such as name-calling? Do they use simple language or do they try to make it so complicated no one can follow? Do the use rhythm and other poetic effects and do they act like pounding the table with a fist or are they repetitive without saying anything new? Do they end where they start, I'm telling you so you know it's true. Do they use political slant such as a communist, or Republican focus?After you note down some of these answers and the answers to other's you can think of, you can write your essay based on those notes.Some examples could be:That shyster tried to trick meNice data but mushy thinkingThe holy roller sure piled on a whole lot of emotion and very little factClean thinking and good evidence but why did the author miss these important thoughtsWhatever the case, your analysis essay needs a thesis statement, arguments in support of your thesis, data provided to support your own arguments, and you need a paragraph to introduce the topic and a paragraph to conclude the topic.
