I had the privilege and honor of serving in the Army Medical Corps for 36 years, after being commissioned in 1977, after graduating from AFMC. There are the following types of doctors in the AMC:General Duty Medical Officers (GDMOs). All Medical Officers start off as GDMOs. As MOs , we are posted in Field Ambulances and as Regimental Medical Officers (RMOs). Those who don't get selected for specialization remain as GDMOS till retirement.Specialist Medical Officers. All basic specialties, such as Medicine, Pathology and so on, have a certain number of specialists vacancies. In addition, we have super specialists in Oncology, Rheumatology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, and so on. The AMC has the best and brightest brains in all specialties and super specialties. Army Hospital (R&R) is the very best Tertiary care Hospital in the country, with the best specialists in the Armed Forces.Administrative Medical Officers. All officers in the AMC of the rank of Colonel and above can be shifted to the Administration cadre, except those who become Senior Advisors and Consultants in their respective specialties. They may rise to the rank of Lt General, the highest in the AMC. They are posted as Commanding Officers, or as Medical Staff Officers in Formation HQ. The Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) is the senior most position in the Armed Forces Medical Services.Which one do I like the most?? ALL OF THEM, BECAUSE THEY ARE MY COMRADES IN ARMS, MY HONORABLE COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS, IN THE BEST ORGANIZATION IN THE COUNTRY!!JAI HIND!!

Proud parents, proud relatives and friends and a lot of happy faces right ?Wrong …!Now I’ll tell you, what happened to our great Captain Saurabh Kalia 6-months into the service.On 15 May 1999 Lt Saurabh Kalia and five other soldiers of the 4 Jat Regiment had gone for a routine patrol of the Bajrang Post in the Kaksar sector in the rugged, treeless Ladakh mountains. They were captured alive by the Pakistani rangers and brutally tortured to death .Post-mortem examinations revealed that the Pakistanis had tortured their prisoners by: burning their bodies with cigarettes, piercing the ear-drums with hot rods, puncturing eyes before removing them, breaking most of their teeth and bones, fracturing their skulls, cutting the lips, chipping of nose, chopping off limbs and private organs of the soldiers, and finally shooting them dead, as evidenced by bullet wounds to the temple. The post-mortem also confirmed the injuries were inflicted ante-mortem (before death).Our brother was so horrendously and brutally murdered .Still not convinced enough ?See that. That is the mother of Lt Ummer fayaz crying over her 22 years old son’s dead body. 22 years GOD DAMN IT !!! JUST 22 YEARS OLD .And that is the mother of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Ashok Chakra who fought valiantly during the Mumbai attacks. If you just take a moment to feel these mother’s unbearable pain and grief.Blood Boils right.That’s not the end. His father Mr N K Kalia has been trying for close to two decades to get justice for the war crimes committed against his son. He had even approached various national and international organisations. And this is what they have said.Britain: We are seeking from the Indian Army a full report of the postmortem, unfortunately without any success so far.Israel: Israel does not have diplomatic relations with Pakistan.Germany: They had contacted the ministry of external affairs and had not received a reply.Pakistan denied the torture of the six soldiers and rejected India's demand to punish the guilty.Wanna ask the father of Captain Saurabh Kalia what he thinks."I am ashamed of being an Indian. WOW! AFMC, hectic?? Not really. Actually, it is organized, academically oriented, while providing you the opportunity to hone your extra curricular skills and passions. How you make use of the many facilities available largely depends on you.There were those in my Batch [1973, “L” Batch] who merely studied and had little interests other than academic. I was in the football, basketball, debating and dramatics teams. I started going to the gym early 1974, spurred by an Army Physical Training Corps Havildar who was keen on training me in weight lifting [which I flatly refused!!]Classes are regular, clinics in Command Hospital Pune. We had some awesome teachers, many of whom were themselves AFMCites, and who were our friend philosopher type guides. We used to go out for movies and dining out once in awhile, just had to be back in time. We have an open air theater in College where we saw some wonderful movies, free of cost, twice a week [English and Hindi]I think I could best summarize life in AFMC as disciplined, academic, busy, well rounded, a perfect training establishment for developing the cream of the country’s doctors, the Officers of the Armed Forces Medical Services. I am proud of my College, and am deeply indebted to my parents and to God for sending me there, one of the all time premier Medical Colleges of India! Jai Hind!!
