Simple, call 911.Police officers MUST report any damage to their vehicle. The oncoming shift will be looking the vehicle over carefully for damage when they start their shift. It’s all part of “roll call” at the start of each shift.If they find damage, they will then notify their supervisor. The supervisor then will check to see if any new damage has been reported.If there was no damage to the vehicle reported, they will then be contacting the officer that was assigned to that vehicle to come back in and fill out a “Departmental Accident Packet.” (Which is NOT fun. It is several different forms that must go to several different inter-department agencies and takes a couple of hours to complete).In addition, the officer can be brought up on charges of failing to comply with department policies for reporting damage to the vehicle. And it is usually department policy for officers to remain at the scene of any accident so the supervisor can respond, take pictures and interview witnesses (for the completion of the supervisors portion of the “Departmental Packet.”If you call 911 and report the incident, that is noted in the log along with your contact information. The supervisor will be notified and they will contact the unit in question (if you were able to get their vehicle number) - or they will call each unit on the phone and ask them - or, failing that…they will inspect each vehicle as it returns to the station at the end of shift, looking for damage.Bottom line, if you are involved in a collision of any type (even if minor), you should call 911 immediately. If the officer pulls over, I can guarantee you that a supervisor will be responding - even if it is for a minor “scrape” - the departmental packets are “no joke” to fill out. I will have on my possession a copy of the recall roster, and duty NCOs #. You also fill out a paper HARP form which includes a vehicle inspection that your Sgt, or SNCO will sign off on. Rarely, but it happens, you'll also have to have an itinerary included of where you are going to stop at hotels and gas stations if you're driving across country.
