Would America defunding the United Nations be a good thing?

The United Nations headquartered in New York City sits on 16 acres of land purchased with an $8 million donation made in 1946 by John D. Rockefeller Jr. The promise asked of UN members was to respect the laws of the United States. This one caveat is not always observed by delegates who take liberties not afforded in their own countries and enjoy immunity from penalties.According to a New York Times article in 2011, the bureaucracy has become so bloated even the workers in the 5 major UN facilities are amazed and confused,“Latest U.N. figures show it employs about 75,000 people, including those in related agencies, under a $5 billion annual budget. This excludes its 16 peacekeeping operations and the cost of several agencies financed by voluntary contributions from member states. The chairman of global affairs at F.T.I. estimates the real annual budget is about $20 billion when all funds and programs are included. That budget is “utterly opaque, untransparent and completely in the shadow” and would benefit from being consolidated and audited from the outside, he said.” The U.S. share is $4.8 billion dollars.”Defunding the United Nations would be an about time thing. For the general upkeep, maintenance, and running of the UN - the United States picks up 22% of the cost.In New York, the Secretary-General admonished deadbeat diplomats at the United Nations, who owed millions of dollars to landlords, banks, hospitals, hotels, service stations, and other creditors in the New York area and millions of Swiss francs in Geneva and those totals rise annually. In 2009 only 22 countries out of 192 - 11.4 percent - were paid-in-full members of the United Nations, a U.N. official said. The American taxpayer is expected to subsidize the other countries.Prior to leaving office, Barak Obama transferred over $500,000,000.00 to the UN without the consent of Congress. What kind of return on this investment can the American people expect? Here is an example. The Geneva office intervened in a dramatic dispute that originated in Bolivia. It seems Bolivia wanted a list of standards drawn up for the trade in llama and alpaca meat. The U.N. Economic Commission for Europe got right on it and published a 44-page report outlining the proper fat content of meat for shipment. If we pull back the covers over botched police actions in Africa it becomes apparent that the UN is ineffective, disorganized and more concerned with hiding their misappropriations and scandals.Secret deals, sex scandals and silence harming the U.N., critics sayHow Corrupt Is the United Nations? - CommentaryThe Corruption of the United NationsAmid Tsunami of Scandals, UN Ignores Massive Corruption

American libertarians: Do you want to eliminate public colleges and universities, and even community colleges?

Oh, my goodness! It is so hard for nonlibertarians to imagine people being free.“If people aren’t enslaved to pick cotton, there won’t be any cotton to make clothing. Why, we’d all be naked! How can these libertarians be against clothing!? Don’t they realize that we’d all freeze during winter!?”Look. The only thing libertarians want to “eliminate” is the enslavement on which (many of) these institutions currently rely. That doesn’t mean that we want to eliminate any particular institution. That decision would be up to you and to people like you, once you were freed to make your own decisions — not up to us.Libertarians are not in the business of denying people alternatives that they really want. In fact, we are dedicated to just about the opposite of that. <0994>How Are Government Colleges Enslavement? But if an institution forces you to labor for it — without your consent, and in some cases despite your active dissent — and if violence is threatened against you if you do not labor for it, that institution is based on slavery. Now, it’s likely that you don’t see the slavery. That’s not really surprising. You have, after all, mostly been schooled in institutions that relied on slavery. And they would have a conflict of interest were they to point this clearly out to you. (In fact, they have probably tried perversely to indoctrinate you that your slavery to, for example, them was actually a hallmark of your own “freedom”, which is one reason why people have so much confusion coming out of government schools about what government is.)But just because the slavery has been carefully hidden, does not mean that slavery is not there. Let me help you see it.The Obvious Enslavement in a Non-Monetary SocietyTo see the slavery, let’s imagine a society that did not use money, so you could not temporarily store your labor.George decides he wants to create a “college”. Without money, there are two principal ways he can do this.Libertarian Method: George can come to you and ask you, hat in hand, for you to come and labor to help build his college and then to continue to labor to help keep his college running. He’d have to make his case. He might extoll the benefits you’d receive, or the love you’d be giving, or the gratitude of the students, or the services that the college would provide you, or the advancements of knowledge that would benefit you and your neighbors, or the community spirit of working with neighbors for the future, etc. He might also promise that you in turn would receive other people’s labor who took advantage of the college. You’d have to weigh his offer against all the other uses of your labor. For example, Peter might have come to you just a bit earlier with a different idea for schooling that would cost far less of your labor but give you and your community far better services. But in the libertarian method, it would be up to you — entirely — to make your own decision about whether you would use your own body to labor for George’s college or to labor for something else.Authoritarian Method: George comes to you and demands, gun in hand, for you to labor to build his college and to labor to keep it running.Your consent doesn’t matter one bit. What else you might prefer to build with your labor doesn’t matter one bit. What you get or don’t get for your labor doesn’t matter one bit.In this method, it is up to George to make his decision about how and on what he will use your body to labor. And he will hurt your body should you not obey him. [Think pyramids here.]In this pre-money society, can you now see what we libertarians see? The authoritarian method is just an excuse to commit slavery. Another man (in this case, George) effectively owns your body, and it is he, not you, who decides for what you will labor your body, and should you balk, he will hurt your body until you comply or you die. What is it we call it when someone forces you to labor for him without your consent at the threat of your life?Hidden Enslavement in a Monetary SocietyOf course, our society does use money.Money is really useful. Money is a temporary store so that you can shift the value of your labor from an employer (who wants your labor but doesn’t have anything you want to trade your labor for) to a seller (who has stuff you want to trade your labor for, but who doesn’t really want your specific labor). <0568>Unfortunately, it is the temporary storage of our labor into money that allows George to hide his enslavement of us. Using just this one level of indirection, George makes his evil entirely disappear. That separation of trading labor for product — into the work and into the trade — is what gives George his plausible deniability. In our monetary society, George lies in wait — between your employer and your seller. He extorts your money as soon as you leave your employer, which is by transference an extortion of your labor, which is all that was stored in that money. In effect, he has retroactively forced you to labor for him: if he steals 40% of the money that your employer gave you for your labor, then, if you labored a total of ten hours, your body consensually labored six hours for the seller, but your body was forced non-consensually to labor four hours for George.George’s extortion of the money containing your stored labor in order to enslave retroactively your labor is not particularly clever or well hidden, but it turns out that only a few people (let’s call most of these people “libertarians”) can survive the indoctrination of George’s schools (all paid for with this stolen labor) and yet still be able to see through George’s ruse.A Big Loss for GeorgeNow, we libertarians simply want to remove that slavery loophole from the picture. We don’t accept George lying in wait to retroactively enslave anyone. We want everyone to labor their own body however they want (because we believe that it’s their body) And we want everyone to trade their body’s labor for whatever they want (again, because we believe that it was their body that labored). And no George (or for that matter, Dick or Harry) should be able to use threats of violence to force anyone to involuntarily labor for them — neither directly, indirectly, nor retroactively. Now, of course, George is going to scream bloody murder! This is understandable! He had slaves!! <1172> He didn’t have to pay us, nor give us anything that we really wanted. He just waved his guns in our face, mumbled empty promises of giving us the moon (which btw he was never able to deliver), and we cowed and turned our stored labor over to him. And this was wise because, well, we wanted to keep our lives, even as slaves of our ruler.George then used our stolen stored labor however he chose — for himself, for his best buds, and for his favorite projects. I mean, that’s a sweet deal if you can get it … and if you don’t mind how evil it is. <1001>But because we libertarians are trying to stop him from his (hidden) slaving, that old George, he’ll have his paid-with-your-labor apologists weaving a big sob story:George enslaved you not for him, but only because he cares for all the wee children! George took only a small amount of your labor for himself and for his buddies! But without George’s enslavement of you, the children! Oh, the children! Think of the children! How they will suffer so much!! The children! Why are you not thinking of the children!? Are you that selfish?! How can you be so cruel as to not think of the children!!But, we libertarians are not all that apologetic about ending slavery — even if it cuts down on the lifestyle of slavers like George. And we’re not particularly impressed with the argument that children need slaves. We like children. Many of us regularly voluntarily sacrifice for children. And most of the people we talk to — especially nonlibertarians like the OP — agree with us!Yet, nonlibertarians are sooo fooled with George’s crocodile tears about his irreplaceable and selfless service of stealing and enslaving for the children, that they are willing to keep everyone a slave to George for fear that the children won’t get any of George’s promised moon (which btw they never will.)Help the Children; Lose the SlaverLook! There is absolutely nothing wrong with voluntarily laboring for children!! Almost everyone believes that that is a virtue. Almost everyone wants to give to children.I have voluntarily labored for children over decades: coaching football for six years even though I didn’t even have children; creating alternative schools for children; helping children and families that were abused by George’s schools; creating and running a school computer lab and a school newspaper; running fundraisers to create special classes; coordinating parent volunteers; teaching practical physics classes and art appreciation classes and Great Book classes and computer classes and entrepreneurship classes; teaching families how to homeschool and how to after-school; creating personal growth seminars for children around goal setting, forgiveness, communication; teaching families how to better educate their child (mostly by escaping George’s schools). I can’t tell you all the labor I have voluntarily given to children. And not one bit of my labor was paid. Every single bit of it was me voluntarily donating my labor to help children who were not my own. And I even donated a lot of my own previously stored labor (i.e., my money savings) on these voluntary activities. So, despite the lies that George tells you, we’re not against children! It is only George’s slavery that we are against. It’s only George’s slavery that is the evil here. What Will Happen? It’s anyone’s guess what freed people will choose to create once George’s manacles are removed from their ankles.I highly recommend that you ignore George’s dire predications. He has a vested interest in keeping you his slave, so everything out of his mouth, and out of the mouths of his paid mouthpieces and slithering cronies, should be suspect. But let me give you my predictions of what would happen should we eliminate the slavery currently extorting your labor for George, for George’s cronies, and — oh, yeah — for George’s (wasteful, broken) schooling institutions:Everyone will still want children to be well-educated — but now we’ll actually have a better chance of getting that outcome in fair exchange for our labors. The current institutions will have to change to align — not with George’s and his cronies’ interests — but with investors, donors, parents, and children.George can still hawk his failed, expensive, broken schools. You would be free to voluntarily give George your stored labor for those schools, in exchange for whatever he promised — results, services, goodwill, or even the moon. However, the ex-slaver, professional thug, and consummate liar George will have plenty of competition. Schooling entrepreneurs (many who used to be George’s ex-teachers, allowed now to work for themselves) will start brick-and-mortar, and virtual, schools. Supporting technologies will spring up. <0667>Education philosophers will redefine what “good education” really means (and how much do you want to bet they will neither start nor end with George’s concept of a wasteful, crony, bureaucrat, institutional, indoctrinating, anti-business, anti-freedom, anti-thinking “place of higher learning”?) <1145>Children will get a faster education that is more specific and lower cost and that actually results in the outcomes that they want. <1369>More young adults will be better and more quickly prepared to take their place in productive adulthood, without a gigantic debt imposed on them either through George’s slavery, or through George’s scam loans, or through George’s counterproductive “school programs”. <0162>See other predictions in the links below. <1142>But just remember, if you chose to live in a freed, libertarian society, you would be the one deciding how to use your own labor (And remember, there will be many authoritarian societies available should you decide to continue to slave for the Georges). And if “educating the children” was your priority, then that is what you could put some of your (stored) labor towards. And the result in the overall society would reflect your and your neighbors’ choices.Which Institutions Would “Be Eliminated”?So, in the unlikely case that a particular region “went libertarian”, every “public college, university, and even community college” in that region would be free to hang around and continue offering its services if it wanted. The primary difference would be that any money they received, would have to come to them with the full consent of the human being whose body’s labor was temporarily stored in that money: these institutions could no longer enslave anyone. Each institution would have to modify its offerings such that freed people voluntarily invested in it, voluntarily donated to it, and voluntarily purchased its services. Those old institutions that could reform their evil ways to provide schooling services in consensual, peaceful, voluntary exchange with freed humans would continue. However, if one of George’s old institutions could not reform itself, such that it could find sufficient funding by peacefully asking for it and win-win trading for it, that particular institution would, by definition, not be wanted by freed men.It would die the natural death of something unwanted — not because we libertarians “eliminated” it, but because you, now a freed man, decided it was a bad deal for you, for your children, and for your community. And in its place would arise new alternatives that freed people, most of whom care incredible amounts for the welfare of children and for greater (real) education, really did want and really were willing to voluntarily labor to support. <0726>You see, libertarians are simply trying to remove slavery from every affair of mankind. Any alternative that can attract the voluntary labor of freed men making peaceful choices about their own bodies will not “be eliminated”, but will flourish.See Related:0994: How would libertarians reform the FDA?0568: How is money different from wealth?1172: What is the strongest argument against libertarianism?1001: What is the hardest argument you face against libertarian ethics?1142: What would libertarians put in place of the old, failed government school system?0697: What is the biggest obstacle to education reform?0162: Why are humanities degrees worthless in the labor market?1369: Do you oppose mandatory education?1091: Should the government pay for education?1370: Why would someone with high IQ not study and become delinquent?1310: What is the best way to improve the educational system?0726: Which colleges or universities are the most libertarian leaning?1357: Does education make a person more likely to be left wing?0727: What if government ended college financial aid?0228: How would a libertarian society reduce the cost of higher education so one could get a job?0334: Should teachers or entrepreneurs run schools?1145: Who is the most radical thinker in education?0667: What are some alternative school concepts?1217: Is universal human literacy worth achieving?→ More essays on <Schooling and Indoctrination> by Dennis→ Return to the <Table of Contents> for Dennis’ Libertarian Essays<, Indoc, Money,>

Would Mike Pence be a better US president than Donald Trump? Who would be worse?

Mike Pence is the most far-right pick Donald Trump could have made. The Koch brothers must be very happy with his pick. If you are unfamiliar with the Koch brothers, please read Dark Money by Jane Mayer. Citizen’s United turned this country over to about twenty billionaires. Democracy is dead. The sooner people accept this fact, the sooner we can take it back from them.Mike Pence is one of the Koch brothers’ favorite elected leaders. Support from the Koch brothers and conservative donors are a major component in a presidential run, so having the major money people’s favorite guy at your side if you’re new to politics is certainly helpful for campaign cash. Americans for Prosperity has been holding up Mike Pence’s work in Indiana as a paragon of a good governor. Pence’s former chief of staff now runs the Koch’s political group Freedom Partners. Given the fact that the Koch’s have pledged to spend $1 billion in the 2016 election to support conservative candidates, his ties could be an asset to Trump as he realizes his own financial limitations. Here are 5 disturbing things you should know about Trump’s likely VP pick Mike PenceThis where Mike Pence stands on various issues. Ask yourself if you agree with him. If not, cast your vote for the Supreme Court. Imagine the United States with Mike Pence at the helm if Trump should die. This is a long list. There are a few things on which I agree with him.Mike Pence on AbortionCommit to unalienable right to life, including the unborn.Arguing about abortion is as fruitless as arguing about whether or not God exists. I’m for women having the first right of refusal when it comes to their bodies. You don’t want one, don’t have one.You have no right to make that choice for me.Mike Pence on Budget & EconomyVoted NO on regulating the subprime mortgage industry.I have nothing else to say about his position on the budget except that we disagree.Mike Pence on Civil RightsVoted YES on Constitutionally defining marriage as one-man-one-woman.I have nothing else to say about his position on civil rights except that we disagree.Mike Pence on CorporationsVoted NO on allowing stockholder voting on executive compensation.I have nothing to say about his position regarding corporations. There are only three. The other two countries are Papua New Guinea and Suriname.US Is Still Only Industrialized Nation Without Paid Maternity LeaveI have nothing else to say about his position on the education except that we disagree.Mike Pence on Foreign PolicyCommitment to unbreakable U.S.-Israel bondThis is an odd one. Why are so many right-wing Republicans in a love affair with Israel? Do they love the Jews so much? Do they see Israel as the only stabilizing force in the Middle East? Perhaps. Could it be something else?“Dispensationalists, Christians who believe that the end times are near, are thrilled to see what is going on today in Israel since the plan fits well into their own expectations for the End. Dispensationalists find comfort in knowing that under The Temple Institute's auspices, small groups of Israelis are sewing priestly vestments, manufacturing implements for animal sacrifice, and teaching a new generation of Temple priests what will be expected of them. It seems to matter little that the desire for a new Temple has the potential of precipitating holy war.”On the Road to ArmageddonA significant number of Christians believe that the end times, as set forth in the bible, are near. In order for all to go as planned, the temple in Jerusalem must be rebuilt.I’d rather have someone in the White House who doesn’t set foreign policy based on biblical prophecy.Mike Pence on Free TradeMike Pence voted yes on every single trade bill. He’s a capitalist who wants to engage in free trade with any country. I’m not sure how this position will work with Donald Trump. He wants Apple to bring all of its manufacturing back to the United States. Will consumers be happy about paying $6000 for an iPhone?Mike Pence on Government ReformCampaign Finance Reform is censorship.Voted YES on requiring photo ID for voting in federal elections.I have nothing to say regarding his position on Government Reform except that we disagree.Mike Pence on Gun ControlRated A by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun rights voting record.I wonder who pays his bills? If we build a wall, someone will come along with a higher ladder.Mike Pence on JobsVoted NO on increasing minimum wage to $7.25.Why in the world would we want big corporations to pay their workers a living wage? I’m being sarcastic.Mike Pence on TechnologyReject the censorship of the Fairness Doctrine.“The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was—in the Commission's view—honest, equitable, and balanced.”Fairness DoctrineWe do have a television station that purports to be fair and balanced. It isn’t.I have nothing more to say on any of Mike Pence’s positions. Ask yourself if you support his philosophy. Ask yourself if this is the man you want only a heartbeat away from the presidency.Mike Pence on the IssuesClick here for 21 full quotes on Abortion OR background on Abortion.Commit to unalienable right to life, including the unborn.
