What do powerlifters do when they gain too much muscle?
This is Ray Williams, and is one of the strongest people to ever live. He’s squatted 1080.2lbs (491kg), benched 545.6lbs (248kg) and deadlifted 878.5lbs (399kg).The Kevser Ermin Applied Physiology Laboratory at the University of Mississippi decided to test his body composition, but they ran into a slight problem. They tried to use an MRI, but quickly realized that…he wouldn’t fit!Not gonna happen. They did an ultrasound instead. He weighs 404lbs (185kg) in competition, and is around 24% bodyfat. That means that he has 305.6 pounds, or 138.6 kilograms, of lean body mass. That’s more than most bodybuilders on stage. Not the kinda guy you’d wanna meet walking home from the bar drunk.Actually…that’s not true. He’s the nicest person in the world as well as the strongest. He’d probably call you a cab and regale you with stories of thousand pound squats while you waited together.Muscle is crucial for lifting weights, and that includes powerlifting. Most powerlifters will train with higher reps, especially during the off season. Their training often looks suspiciously similar to…bodybuilding. Not surprisingly, many bodybuilders are really good at powerlifting. Ronnie Coleman would likely hit a 850deadlift/600bench/800 squat, at a minimum. That’s 386/272/363 for my kilo-loving colleagues. This has given rise to so-called “powerbodybuilding” or “powerbuilding”. Basically it’s training with a focus on both physique goals (bodybuilding) and strength goals (powerlifting). It’s championed by Mike O’Hearn but has been done by thousands of top athletes.I realize many people aren’t fans of his, and neither am I. Chill out in the comments, eh?Basically, there is no way to get too muscular for powerlifting, unless you want to stay in a certain weight class. In that case, you may want to focus on the prime movers.Squat=quads and glutesBench=chest, front delts and tricepsDeadlift=hamstrings and glutesEd Coan once said,“Biceps are like ornaments on a Christmas tree.”For the most part, it’s true. Your biceps aren’t really moving any load for any of the powerlifts. But…they won’t get in the way, either. That’s not true of weightlifting, where big ol’ baseball biceps can actually prevent getting in the correct positions…Or massive legs and glutes might prevent you from going as deep in the squat as you otherwise could. In fact, bigger legs are usually good for powerlifting; you want to squat to parallel, and NOT super deep. Having tight adductors and glutes can actually help you squat HIGHER, which can be a good thing.By the way, the study on Ray Williams said…He “may be very close to a physiologic limit with respect to muscle size and geometry.”That’s scientist-speak for:“Human beings cannot get more jacked than this.”Follow me on Instagram or YouTube for diet and training tips!
Should I change my CS major because of the "no code movement"?
Nope. I’ve been a software engineer for 30+ years and have a MS in CS. Before “no code”, there were “software factories” and 4th generation languages (anyone remember powerbuilder?), in the 80s armchair forecasters were predicting AI / expert systems would replace programmers. I stay pretty current and I see nothing on the horizon that will replace human programmers en masse. As others have pointed out, the most important consideration is that you have a passion for, or at least enjoy, programming and solving problems. Also realize that there is a very wide variance among jobs that are all classified as “programmer” or “software engineer”. This means that you will have the opportunity to find a job that fits your interests and desires. The only other caveat is that to stay marketable you will have to continue learning throughout your career and pay careful attention to your career. Even 1–2 years in the wrong job (e.g. outdate tech stack, bad industry with low growth, etc) can have bad long-term effects. You don’t want to be that guy/gal who just when your kids are starting college or whatever gets laid off and then you realize your skills are dated and you cannot replace your income.
What is something that almost nobody knows about muscle size versus muscle strength?
Strength = Mind + CNS + muscle fiber recruitment + ligament & tendon & bone strength + ability to endure and surmount resistance and any and all pain because of it till it moves or bends or lifts while you remain.Example Paul Anderson - you expect strength but not lifting an entire football team . Press a 265 lb dumbbell 5 X with either hand while talking without strain in his voice looking at his watch, I watched him do it at an exhibition at Brevard College in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. I was the young idiot who asked to carry that dumbbell out of the building and on to the parking lot and into his station wagon. That was every ounce of 265 and it was heavy aerobics getting there, I was too proud and stubborn to give up, and I made it.Bodybuilders you see the muscles and expect strength but which was stronger them or……or was he stronger……..Joseph L. Greenstein, aka The Mighty AtomPhysical strength spikes during emergencies when the heart and adrenaline take over, people preform amazing feats of strength they normally could not do, the normal checks and balances in the body and the mind are bypassed and ordinary people lift cars or railroad car doors off of people; but later find they are internally injured as much or more than who they were trying to save.We lived next to the lumber yard with a rail spur , in my home town. During unloading lumber from a boxcar the forklift hit the door and it fell on one of the guys, he is under it screaming; and one of the coworkers goes into adrenaline overdrive and grabs the big boxcar steel door lifts it and throws it off the man. He was injured worse than the man, and the door stayed where he hurled it for months. When he came back to work he could not budge even one corner of the big door much less lift and hurl it anywhere. Strong Men & Strong Women & powerbuilding bodybuilders & strength athletes - are always gradually inching closer and closer to those adrenaline overdrive fight or flight limits . It they do not get injured by going too close to those limits too soon, they recover from each foray and get physically mentally tougher and stronger. That’s why Franco Columbo and Frank Zane could be as strong or stronger then men weighing 70–100 lbs more than they did. They intelligently pushed the envelope more and more but not to injury , recovered, over compensated, got stronger and stronger.
