And they got to write the history books.Most famously, the guy was ruthless to the Ikko-Ikki. A sect of Buddhist warrior-monks who desired a Japan ruled by the people, not blue-blooded governors from Kyoto and the clans or aristocratic daimyo. So they kind of pissed off everyone who wasn’t a peasant.But perhaps the cardinal crime - and what elevates him above other warlords they fought like Ieyasu - was the Siege of Mt. Hiei in 1571. A fortress of the Ikko-ikki that served as one of their strong points.…Or rather, the annihilation of Mt. Hiei because the whole thing was so shockingly one-sided I think even the League of Puppy-Kickers would call Nobunaga nasty.Not only did Oda Nobunaga burn the entire thing to the ground - villages, temples, shrines and all, he sent his men after anyone - women and children included - who survived the attack. This was followed by burning down the Buddhist monastery that formed the centre of the community.Murdering women and children and burning houses of worship. Yeah, it’s that kind of story. An entire mountain community burned to the ground and every single person in it given a death sentence for the crime of rebellion.He was also, probably, a bit of a dick in regards to tradition - at least in the eyes of most of the Japanese nobility. He wore Western dress, didn’t consider status when it came to justice, and pretty much everyone - high or low - was treated the same under his laws. Because he was very harsh on anyone he considered his enemy, that meant he refused to give any nobles brought before him special treatment when they were tried for any crimes they committed such as rebellion against him. He made a lot of enemies in the highly traditionalist Japanese court of the time doing this. As Japan at the time was a society where the nobility were of special heritage. And you were expected to dress and accessorise yourself in a way that was specific to your station and position in the pecking order.This also meant that according to the Japanese rules of war, he was a dirty cheater. He wouldn’t give captured samurai special treatment and the Oda Clan was famous for its particular preference to Ashigaru peasant soldiers. They formed the core of his army in the sacking of Kyoto during the Onin War, and during the battle of Nagashino in 1575, Oda matchlock Ashigaru carried the day against against the legendary Takeda cavalry.What this meant in the Japanese rules of war was Nobunaga was plainly guilty of the crime of “peasants being allowed to easily kill Samurai.” The whole honour-trope of “using guns is dishonourable” only applied if it was a peasant using the gun. Nobunaga didn’t care because making peasant-soldiers the mainstay of his army his made it near unbeatable in battle and more easily-replaceable should he suffer losses.Were that not enough of a middle finger, Nobunaga also opened his gates to Christian missionaries. Which was a really big no-no for the Japanese at the time who feared foreign influence would destroy everything. The story goes the whole “demon king” thing came from him joking to a Jesuit Father that he held the title of Demon King of the Sixth Heaven. Which in Buddhist mythology is the title of the demon who sought to seduce the Buddha with earthly pleasures like women and money.Translation: He joked with a missionary that he was Buddhist Satan!So. Killing Buddhists, burning their towns, holding court with Christians and foreigners, not giving a fig about Japanese traditions and the class system, making a lot of enemies with traditionalists and subsequently crushing them. Even if half of this didn’t happen the way accounts say they do, history is written for the winners. And it benefited a largely traditional and Buddhist society to paint the guy who appeared rather adversarial to much of that to look like a monster.So it’s little surprise the largely Buddhist society in the centuries after the Sengoku era figured the title he jokingly gave himself was rather apt. Accounts of events written during and long after the Sengoku period defined Nobunaga’s image similar to how ideas about the European Medieval era written in the 19th century (and largely based on either anti-Church bias or exaggerations of stuff that happened after 1500 C.E.) defined even the modern-day popular image of the Middle Ages.

You have to understand this ‘popularity’ in the context.Historically, any cultural thing that was from the superpower which influenced Korea tremendously would always gain its popularity in Korea. So Korean could be Buddhists, Confucianist, Tengrinists, Taoists, Shintoists, Christians, Communists for whatever the superpower is practicing. When the trend in superpower is changed or the current superpower is replaced by another, the trend in Korea would also change correspondingly.Compare with its neighbor Japan, Korea historically has had less “cultural autonomy” so Korean society tend to be more “flexible” than Japanese on switching their beliefs or faiths.Once you understand this context, it would be easy to see the rest. Fundamentally, Christianity was popular because of Western dominance. Though Christianity did play a certain role during the Japanese occupation for conducting the anti-Japan activities, don’t forget that the majority of Korean, including most of the founding fathers, were pro-Japan during that time and the majority that contributed most against Japan were Communists. The fact that Christianity was leveled up as almost a state religion was obviously constructed after the Korean war.For example, South Korean true founding father was 金九, who was a true nationalist and was actually keeping a good relationship with the Communists in North Korea and was leading the ceasefire between the North and South and pushed for a reunification. But he was assassinated by the right wing which 李承晚 played a suspicious role. 李承晚 was a theologist who majored in Christianity in the US. Under Li’s leadership, South Korea started to provoke the North which eventually triggered the North to strike, and then the US intervened. Then we can look at the third President of South Korea 朴正熙. Here is his photo back then in 1944.To put it short, the founding fathers in South Korea are a group of Christian missioners and leftover of ex pro-Japan far-right nationalists who then pro the US. The similar situation happened in Japan that the US had to rely on ex Japanese far-right militarists to control Japan against the wave of Communists. The two groups together set up South Korea. Under their governances, the South Korean economy has been controlled by the oligarchs who tied themselves up with the American interests by the economic opportunity during the Vietnam war, the economic sanction on Japan in the late 80s which led to the shift of production line into South Korea in the early 90s, especially after 1997 the Asian financial crisis in which the “foreign investors”, thanks to IMF whose home base is in Washington DC, own over 50% share of all the top 10 Korean enterprises including Samsung.To support that material change, Christianization, Desinofication and Westernization have been pushed on a strategic level for “indoctrinating” Korean. And all the South Korean Presidents were either jailed, suicided, assassinated for the collision of all sort of domestic and foreign interests, especially if they dare to make a move on improving the relationship with North Korean or disobey the US. Since nobody is clean and can be both clean and President at the same time under the complicated network of Oligarchs and the US’s dominance, no Korean leader can escape the control of the big hand while earning a good ending,Those who follow up Korean politics should probably know what’s happening recently. Even the President who launched the full scale of investigation and campaign cannot move the oligarch and the power behind it even slightly.To make it short, Christianity was not a natural process. It is a man-made, politicized project to seek to control South Korea. To reverse this process, you either destroy the oligarch by elections which has been proved as absolutely impossible, or get invaded by North Korean to let the sun general Kim handle down all the elites, or wish the US to withdraw both politically and economically from South Korea so that at least oligarhch’s influence can be weakened. Other than that there is no hope for Christianity would continue to exist.
