Since I live next door to a section 8 house and I know someone who lost her section 8 benefits, I’ll offer my two cents. First of all, government benefits do not pay the “full rent.” It may pay about 70%–90% of it, but not 100%. Next and the main reason why landlords don’t accept them is because, you really don’t know what kind of tenant you’re getting. Most of the tenants don’t give a damn about your property. They have the mindset, “it’s not mine and the landlord can afford to get things fixed if I let my children destroy the place.” A family of four will move into an empty house and the next month there’s eight or nine living there. All claiming to be related to the woman who obtained the section 8 voucher. My former neighbor stiffed the landlord for thousands of dollar in unpaid rent. She kept making complaints about the house needing repairs. But when the landlord sent repairmen to the house, my neighbor would not let them inside. Many times she claim she wasn’t home all the while she just didn’t answer the door. The last time she did that trick, the repairmen and landlord came with the police. Again she didn’t answer the door but all the time she was in the house. She was evicted about two months later and the sheriff deputies had to literally tear down the door. Of course, she was inside. All the time she was making up these lies just to avoid paying her share of the rent. The landlord told me she had not paid rent in three years. Apparently it’s not easy to evict a section 8 tenant. HUD don’t care about the tenants destroying your place. They always protect the tenant’s rights. My girlfriend whom I have known for years was receiving section 8 and kept telling me and others she was on a waiting list. All the while she and her four kids were living with her mother. Well, it turned out she was getting section 8 and was subleasing the house to three tenants. One of them sued her and that’s how HUD discovered her fraud. She ended up doing 36 months in the “big house.” Meanwhile, her kids lived with her mother. Whiling serving time her mother died and the kids ended up in foster care. She even had the audacity to ask me if she could stay at my house after she was released. Of course I said no and that was the end of our friendship. Now she lives in a homeless shelter.
