I suppose that depends on whom one considers “black.”Before colonization and settlement of European populations in Southern Africa, there existed two major groups: Bantu and Khoisan populations.Khoisan-like people have been in the land for what seems to be about 80 - 100,000 years[1][1][1][1] , though their lineages have been separate for much longer than that. They aren’t a single group, as many speak unrelated languages, and have traditionally followed different lifestyles (i.e., Pastoralist Khoi v. Hunter Gatherer San populations). They, however, are distinct from the next major group in that they have a higher incidence of lighter skin shades and tend to have epicanthic eye-folds. Epicanthic eye-folds aren’t uncommon around the world, but they tend not to cluster in many populations. To many, it gives them an appearance that is vaguely similar to that of East Asian populations. Today, they are most common across the Western portion of the country. However, they make up the majority of the population. They appeared in what is now South Africa by between 300 and 500 A.D. They were part of the larger Bantu expansion that started by between 3,000 and 1,000 B.C.E, though most sources seem to say 1,000 B.C.E., from what is now the border region of Cameroon and Nigeria.[2][2][2][2] These people spoke the Proto-Bantu language (reconstructed)[3][3][3][3] , and most easily fit the category people deem “black.”Above: One of many proposed maps that details much of, though not all of, the migration.They had mid to dark brown skin, and looked mostly like West Africans. On their way through South Africa, they absorbed, conquered, or in some cases, outright replaced preexisting populations. Since they made use of farming and metallurgy[4][4][4][4] , they were able to sustain larger populations and spread more easily compared to the smaller pastoralist and hunter-gatherer populations.[5][5][5][5] Some polities, such as the Zulu kingdom, became particularly prominent in the area.Above: Zulu people.As Bantu populations expanded throughout the area, they intermingled to an extent with the preexisting peoples. Before Europeans arrived in west Africa, like the South Americans, Africans had something like aqueducts and toilets. Instead of wearing sweaty clothes in their tropical climate, they wore ornate jewelry, weaving gold thread through their hair and dusting themselves w gold. There are pyramids in sub Saharan africa and great kingdoms in the east and west. They also built great fortresses that somewhat resembled castles but the actual architecture of their hkmes was closer to the Japanese centuries ago.
