Which Democratic candidate will take on Trump? US election 2020:Election day is less than a year away now and the race to become the Democratic challenger to Donald Trump is hotting up.Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are the relatively well-known frontrunners, but most of the other candidates were mostly unknown outside the Washington DC bubble before running.The group features the usual mix of senators and other members of Congress, but this year it also includes a record number of women, a gay mayor and a spiritual counsellor.Here's our rundown of all the major candidates that are running, including a few wildcards, with a take from the BBC's Anthony Zurcher on each.Who will take on Trump in 2020?28 candidates in totalJoe Biden 11/20/1942 Obama's VP Barack Obama picked Joe Biden to be his running-mate in 2008 because of his supposed folksy appeal to white working-class and middle-class voters - and that's exactly why he could be a formidable candidate in 2020.The former Delaware senator unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and 2008 and declined to run in 2016 after the death of his son from brain cancer. His long voting record, which includes backing the Iraq War in 2002 and sponsoring a controversial anti-crime bill in 1996, has already drawn criticism from some of his more liberal opponents.He has sharply criticised Donald Trump for "trashing American values", but he's seen as a Democrat who could work with Republicans.Anthony's take:Joe Biden is a front-runner in theDemocratic presidential contest, if not the front-runner. He has near universal name recognition, high approval ratings, and the potential to raise vast amounts of campaign money through traditional Democratic donor networks.Of course, so did Hillary Clinton in 2015 - and we all know how that turned out.Mrs Clinton's key weakness was her lengthy time in the public eye, leaving a long record for her opponents to pick apart, and binding her to a status quo establishment many Americans had come to Biden shares those challenges in spades, and he faces a much more diverse and talented primary field than Mrs Clinton did.There are also questions about whether the 76-year-old candidate has the stamina to maintain a lengthy and arduous campaign schedule.Elizabeth Warren 06/22/1949 Wall St critic Elizabeth Warren has been a favourite of the progressive left since she emerged on the political scene to push for tougher regulation of the financial sector after the 2008 economic crash. During her time in the US Senate she became known for her hard-nosed interrogations of Wall Street executives and as an outspoken critic of income inequality.That loyal base may be enough to rise to the top of a fractured Democratic presidential field - but she will probably have to pry some supporters away from Bernie Sanders, who will be competing with her for progressive hearts and minds.Anthony's take:She's got financial chops and is building a formidable political operation, but professorial Massachusetts liberals are a tough sell to the rest of the country.Progressives will have to decide if they find her promise of economic reform more attractive than Bernie's revolutionary zeal.Bernie Sanders 09/08/1941 Mr Anti-Establishment The Vermont senator would be 79 on election day, but he's decided to make another run at the top prize. His long-shot bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 captured the hearts of American progressives, and he has been packing arenas with loyal supporters ever since. But former allies Elizabeth Warren and Tulsi Gabbard are both also running this time round and could carve off some of his support. Anthony's take:Bernie Sanders is a victim of his own success-in 2016 he pulled the Democratic Party to the left, but it means he's not as unique a candidate in 2020.He has the advantages of name recognition, fund-raising and national campaign organisation, but his opponents won't avoid attacking him the way Hillary Clinton did three years ago.His days as a plucky underdog are over.Pete Buttigieg 01/19/1982 Impressive millennial Pete Buttigieg isn't the only millennial in the 2020 race but he is positioning himself as a voice for the young. The mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is a military veteran and the only openly gay presidential hopeful. He's proven he can win locally in a conservative state and mounted a surprisingly strong bid for chair of the Democratic National Committee in 2017. Anthony's take:The march of time ensures millennials will run things someday.A Buttigieg presidency seemed like a long shot at first, but he's fundraising like a top-tier candidate.He'll have to diversify his support - including expanding his appeal to black voters - if he wants to win the nomination, http://however.No matter how his campaign ends up, his candidacy is a sign of things to come.Andrew Yang 01/13/1975 Tech entrepreneur Yang is a technology entrepreneur who should be well prepared seeing as he announced he was running for president back in November 2017. He graduated from Columbia Law School and spent more than a decade working on several start-up companies before being appointed Ambassador of Global Entrepreneurship in 2015 by the Obama administration. He's proposing that the US government pay a $1,000-a-month “freedom dividend” to all Americans between the ages of 18 and 64 as a form of universal basic income to cushion against fewer jobs due to increased automation.Anthony's take:With his freedom dividend proposal, Andrew Yang is a "one big idea" candidate. He'll go as far as his idea takes him.A successful campaign will be if he gets the other candidates to consider the merits of a universal income.Amy Klobuchar 05/25/1960 Folksy senator Amy Klobuchar may not be a household name, but the three-term Minnesota senator has shown the ability to win votes in the kind of Midwestern battleground state that Donald Trump appealed to in 2016.Another former prosecutor, Ms Klobuchar won praise for her cool competence in the heated confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.She has long prided herself in being able to "disagree without being disagreeable", giving her a reputation for being "Minnesota nice". But the initial buzz around her campaign has been dampened a bit by allegations that she has been abusive toward her staff.Anthony's take:She offers a steady, sensible political outlook that could attract the majority of Democratic voters who are more interested in electability than ideological purity.If Biden eventually falters, she will be in the thick of the fight for the support of moderate Democrats.Cory Booker 04/27/1969 Gifted speaker Cory Booker is a prodigious fundraiser who knows how to work Wall Street donors.His background reflects the diversity of the modern Democratic Party and his time as mayor of blue-collar Newark gives him a grounding to the plight of the underprivileged.The New Jersey senator has an undisputed talent for public speaking, making him one of the more engaging candidates on the stump.Many on the left don't trust him, however. They view his big-money ties as a liability and haven't forgotten his 2012 defence of Republican Mitt Romney's venture-capital background during that year's presidential campaign.Anthony's take:Mr Booker will be pressed to convince Democrats he's the one to take them to the promised land.He has some of that Obama 2008 hope-and-change magic, but his silver tongue will get quite a workout.Tulsi Gabbard 04/12/1981 Iraq veteran Tulsi Gabbard, born in American Samoa and of Polynesian descent, is a difficult candidate to characterise. Most of the Hawaii congresswoman's views fit firmly in the progressive camp and she was an early and outspoken supporter of Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign. The Iraq War veteran has drawn criticism, however, for meeting with Bashar al-Assad in January 2017 - after the Syrian president had been accused of repeatedly using poison gas on civilian populations. The daughter of a socially conservative politician and activist, Ms Gabbard may also draw the ire of Democratic voters for her past criticism of "homosexual extremists" and opposition to abortion rights and gay marriage. She made history in 2012 when she became the first Hindu member of the US Congress.Anthony's take:If Democrats are looking for a young, charismatic iconoclast - even if it means supporting someone whose views don't always match their own - then Ms Gabbard might have a shot.Tom Steyer 06/27/1957 Billionaire tycoon Tom Steyer is a hedge-fund billionaire from California who has shifted from environmental advocacy to calls for Mr Trump's impeachment to a presidential 2018 he spent more than $100m to support Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives, suggesting he may be willing to invest at least as much - or more - in his bid for the Democratic nomination.His largess has made political allies across the US, and his grass-roots impeachment organising efforts helped build a million-strong contact list of like-minded voters.Anthony's take:Tom Steyer appeared to close the door on a presidential bid back in January, instead pledging to do whatever it takes to remove Donald Trump from office via the constitutionally outlined impeachment process.He has changed his mind, which is the kind of luxury afforded a billionaire it's not exactly apparent what path someone like Steyer has to the Democratic nomination. But with a budget limited only by his imagination, if there is even the smallest path he has the resources to bulldoze it Clear-at the very least, he could be a disrupter in the electoral process, free to challenge his opponents to take a more aggressive stand on impeaching the president and push them on environmental issues.Julian Castro 09/16/1974 Ex-Obama ally It wasn't long ago that Julian Castro would have been considered a top-tier candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. He was a well-regarded mayor of San Antonio, landed the keynote address at the 2012 Democratic National Convention and went on to a Cabinet position in the Obama administration.That was then, however, and this is now.Castro has an uphill climb to get past better-known candidates who are still in elective office. He's shown sharp elbows in the debates, however, which has helped get him some much-needed attention.Anthony's take:His resume is solid and his Hispanic heritage is helpful, but - while he has improved over the course of the campaign - his charismatically challenged speaking style is never going to light up a crowd.He's the kind of politician who seems engineered in a laboratory for the vice-presidential spot.Michael Bloomberg 02/14/1942 Wealthy ex-mayor Michael Bloomberg officially entered the race to become the Democratic Party presidential nominee in November.The billionaire former New York Mayor said he was standing "to defeat Donald Trump and rebuild America".Mr Bloomberg is one of the richest men in America with a net-worth of $54.4bn (£42bn), according to Forbes.Born in Massachusetts, he started out as a Wall Street banker before going on to create the financial publishing empire that bears his name.Over the years he has given millions of dollars to educational, medical and other causes - including political ones.Anthony's take:Mr Bloomberg is a very data-driven businessman. But it doesn't take an advanced degree in quantitative analysis to realise that the Democratic field, even at this (relatively) late date is still in flux.Deval Patrick 07/31/1956 Last-minute longshot Former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick entered the race in November, adding to the field just as many were hoping it was finally a video announcing his decision, he said he wanted to "build a better, more sustainable, more inclusive American Dream for the next generation."Mr Patrick, who is a close friend of former President Barack Obama, governed Massachusetts from 2007 to 2015.A trained lawyer, he served under President Bill Clinton as Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice's civil rights division in the mid-1990s.More recently, he was managing director at private equity firm Bain Capital. He has also worked at oil firm Taxaco and The Coca-Cola Company.Anthony's take:Deval Patrick is testing the old adage that it’s better late than never.He has obvious political skills - and political connections to boot - but starting a campaign from zero just a few months before the New Hampshire primary is a tall order.He doesn't have the personal fortune of a Michael Bloomberg or the name recognition of an Oprah or Hillary Clinton, so he'll have to count on a strong performance in New Hampshire to make any headway.He's a decided longshot, and his entry into the race may say more about the instability of the current presidential field than his personal political prospects.John Delaney 04/16/1963 Ex-tech entrepreneur John Delaney was officially the first entrant into the 2020 Democratic presidential field when the Maryland congressman announced his candidacy in July 2017.The former tech entrepreneur has a platform that focuses on jobs, education and infrastructure and a return to bipartisan co-operation.Anthony's take:Mr Delaney's call for a return to bipartisan co-operation is going to be a tough sell in today's sharply divided political environment.The three-term Maryland congressman has logged the hours in Iowa, which hosts the first nominating contest.He's got a chance if accumulated face time translates into votes. (It doesn't.)Marianne Williamson 08/07/1952 Spiritual counsellor Marianne Williamson is a best-selling author, charity organiser and spiritual adviser who counts Oprah Winfrey as her most famous follower. Her bid to become president isn't her first foray into politics - she tried and failed to win California's 33rd congressional district back in 2014. She spent nearly $2m and finished fourth. Anthony's take:By focusing on emotion and spirituality, Williamson is running a campaign vastly different from any of her COMPETITORS. IT may not win her many votes, but it's allowed her to stand out from the crowd.Michael Bennet 11/28/1964 Soft-spoken moderate Michael Bennet, a two-term US senator, is the second Colorado politician - along with former Governor John Hickenlooper - in the Democratic presidential race.The former head of the Denver public school system, Bennet styles himself as a moderate who has shown he can win elections in a battleground state - a pragmatist who can advance progressive priorities like healthcare, education and equitable economic growth through bipartisan consensus.Anthony's take:As the surge in support for South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has shown, it's not impossible for a little-known politician to break out onto the 2020 national stage.That may give Bennet some hope.He had his own viral moment when he sharply disparaged perennial Democratic villain Ted Cruz from the Senate floor earlier this Year-in a crowded field, it will be a real challenge for a soft-spoken moderate to stand out, however.Kamala Harris 10/20/1964 Rising star Kamala Harris dropped out of the presidential race in December, saying she didn't have the financial resources to continue her campaign. "I'm not a billionaire. I can't fund my own campaign. And as the campaign has gone on, it's become harder and harder to raise the money we need to compete," she told supporters. The California senator's campaign seemed full of promise when it launched in January 2019, but she struggled to make headway in a crowded field.The 55-year-old, a vocal critic of President Trump, was once seen as a rising star within the party but she could not cement her fleeting position in the top tier of candidates.Anthony's take:January's launch event in Oakland felt like the beginning of something big - a presidential campaign with money, national organisation and a young, charismatic candidate whose background was as diverse as the party she wanted to lead.The former state attorney general and prosecutor from nearby San Francisco gave a speech full of lofty rhetoric, saying that the 2020 presidential election would be about the "right to moral leadership" of the entire planet.Now her campaign won't be around to see 2020, let alone the November general election.Pundits and analysts are already picking apart Harris's campaign strategy and perceived missteps over the past months. She tried to walk a line between the moderate and the progressive wings of her party and ended up appealing to neither.She squandered her surge to near-front-runner status after a clash with Joe Biden in the June debate with muddled responses to questions on healthcare policy. At 55, she still has a long political career ahead of her. She would be an attractive vice-presidential pick for a candidate like Biden. While her first foray into national politics will be largely remembered for unmet expectations and missed opportunities, she has plenty of time for a second act.Steve Bullock 04/11/1966 Little-known governor Steve Bullock, the governor of Montana, dropped out of the race in December after failing to convince Democrats that he could beat Donald Trump. He had entered the crowded contest as the only Democratic hopeful elected to statewide office in a state President Trump carried in 2016. In a kickoff video dubbed "Fair Shot" posted online, the 53-year-old leaned heavily on progressive accomplishments notched in Montana since he was elected governor in 2012, while also highlighting the need to reach deals with Republicans.Anthony's take:A lot of Democratic presidential hopefuls have talked about winning over Trump voters in conservative states. Steve Bullock, who was re-elected as Montana’s governor in 2016 at the same time that Donald Trump carried the state by 20% over Hillary Clinton, actually has the receipts.in - Deleted | DAN.COM the end, however, Bullock’s pitch as a folksy politician who could sell progressive policies to a wider electoral audience fell on deaf Democratic ears.A late entry in a crowded field, he struggled to gain a foothold against better-known opponents. He was an afterthought in the one Democratic debate for which he qualified.Much to the dismay of national Democrats, Bullock’s withdrawal from the presidential race does not mean he is considering a Senate bid, where he could be a formidable challenger to Republican incumbent Steve Daines. Instead, Bullock plans to spend the next year serving out his term as governor.Joe Sestak 12/12/1951 Retired admiral Joe Sestak, a former Pennsylvania congressman and three-star vice admiral in the US Navy, ended his campaign in December. He was late to join the race, announcing his campaign at the end of June, and he failed to qualify for any of the major debates. His career in the military spanned three decades. He commanded a carrier strike group during combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and served on the National Security Council under President Bill Clinton. His campaign focussed on climate change and global policy.Anthony's take:For five months Joe Sestak tilted at windmills on the presidential campaign trail, hitting Democratic candidate forums and keeping an ambitious schedule of events in the key early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.While he may have gathered cherished memories along the way, there’s little indication he got much else in return for his efforts. He barely registered in opinion polls and never came close to qualifying for any of the presidential debates.Sestak once caused headaches for the Democratic Party in his home state of Pennsylvania, where he once defeated an incumbent Democratic senator in a primary contest, only to lose the general election.This time around, the Democratic powers that be probably gave his candidacy no thought at all.Beto O'Rourke 09/26/1972 Rock star Robert "Beto" O'Rourke quit the race in November, saying his campaign did not have "the means to move forward successfully". Announcing the decision, Mr O'Rourke tweeted: "Our campaign has always been about seeing clearly, speaking honestly, and acting decisively."In that spirit: I am announcing that my service to the country will not be as a candidate or as the nominee."He became a political powerhouse after coming close to ousting Republican Senator Ted Cruz in Texas, a traditionally red state, in 2018. His passionate delivery along with his good looks and background as a skateboarder and a punk rocker have endeared him to liberals across the country.Anthony's take:In just about 12 months, Beto O'Rourke went from Democratic rock star to political rock bottom.His obvious political skills in his home state of Texas did not translate on to the national stage, where a lack of campaign organisation and an inability to stand out on a crowded debate stage cost him O'Rourke's relatively thin CV was also a liability in a match-up against senators and a former vice-president with extensive experience and in-depth policy knowledge.He may have a second act in national politics, but his 2019 effort will be an experience he will have to overcome, not build on.Tim Ryan 07/16/1973 Midwest moderate Tim Ryan ended his campaign in October, saying he would run for reelection in his congressional seat. Anthony's take:After the 2016 election there was a lot of talk among Democrats about winning back working-class voters in the industrial Midwest states. Tim Ryan - a blue-collar congressman from Ohio - seemed like the kind of presidential candidate tailor-made for such a strategy.The problem for Ryan was that Vice-President Joe Biden also fits that bill, and Biden is a household name, while Ryan was relatively unknown - and stayed that way.Boxed out of the last two debates, and with little hope of finding a way into the next two, Ryan finally acknowledged that any slim hope he had at breaking through had vanished.He might find a second life as a potential vice-presidential selection, although it would have helped considerably if he had made a bigger splash when he was on the campaign trail.Bill de Blasio 05/08/1961 Progressive mayor Bill de Blasio ended his campaign in September after it failed to take off."I have reached a point where I feel I have contributed all I can to this primary," the 58-year-old said in an email to supporters.He became a progressive darling when he won the New York mayor's office in 2013 while decrying the city's income inequality.Since then, he has enacted universal pre-kindergarten, policing reform and expanded family leave for city workers, but struggled to deal with housing and public transportation crises. He's also been dogged by campaign-related ethical complaints.Anthony's take:Bill de Blasio's presidential campaign has been described as "quixotic" - but even Cervantes' hero had a few imagined victories before the end. The New York mayor was a late entry to the race, started at the bottom of the pack and stayed there.He ran on a progressive platform, but progressives didn't like him. No one seemed to like him much. In fact, the New Yorker's negatives were higher than any of the other candidates in the field.Perhaps Democratic voters weren't that keen on trading the current pugilistic New Yorker in the White House for one of their own.Kirsten Gillibrand 12/09/1966 #MeToo ally Senator Kirsten Gillibrand ended her candidacy in August after failing to qualify for the third Democratic debate."I know this isn't the result we wanted. We wanted to win this race," she said. "But it's important to know when it's not your time, and to know how you can best serve your community and country."She has been an outspoken supporter for the #MeToo movement as well as advocating for victims of sexual assault on college campuses and in the military.Anthony's take:The September debate-qualification scythe has claimed another victim.Mrs Gillibrand didn't hit the necessary donor or poll numbers to make the stage and appeared unlikely to rebound for the October event. With her political oxygen running out, she heads for the exits.Although the New York senator's campaign never caught fire - or even showed signs of a spark - she was once considered an up-and-comer in the party with presidential buzz. Young and charismatic, Mrs Gillibrand had positioned herself as the candidate of the #MeToo movement, becoming an outspoken advocate for women's issues.That may have also been her downfall, however. She angered some Democrats by quickly calling for Senator Al Franken's resignation after he faced sexual harassment allegations. And she alienated Clinton loyalists by criticising Bill Clinton's handling of the Monica Lewinsky scandal.Seth Moulton 10/24/1978 Ex-Marine Seth Moulton ended his campaign in August.He said it had become clear to him that it was a three-way race between Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The Massachusetts congressman served four tours in Iraq with the Marines before getting a master's degree in business at Harvard. He said he would run for re-election to the House now he had given up on the White House. Anthony's take:Moulton has been tabbed as a charismatic Democratic up-and-comer with a compelling resume for several years - but ultimately that wasn't enough to gain traction this year.John Hickenlooper 02/07/1952 Low-key moderate John Hickenlooper halted his campaign in August.The 67-year-old had touted his record as a two-term Colorado governor, where he presided over new environmental regulations, expansion of health care coverage and new gun control legislation.But the moderate candidate failed to stand out in the congested field.Announcing his withdrawal, Mr Hickenlooper said he had heard from many Coloradans who have asked him to run for US Senate.Anthony's take:It turns out being a quiet, no-nonsense moderate in the crowded 2020 Democratic presidential field wasn't a viable pathway to victory - or even making it within seeing distance of the actual primaries and caucuses.John Hickenlooper may be popular in his home state of Colorado, and he may have a track record of using bipartisanship to enact progressive priorities, but good resumes don't move the polls or bring in the campaign donations.The former governor was anaemic in his two debate performances, often getting lost in the shuffle and failing to make a mark when he was given opportunities to speak.For a back-of-the-pack candidate, those prime-time opportunities simply can't be squandered.Jay Inslee 02/09/1951 Climate campaigner Jay Inslee dropped out of the crowded race in August. He had made combating climate change his number one priority, but failed to attract national governor of Washington, Inslee has taken a lead role in "the resistance" to the Trump administration on the state level, including pushing a lawsuit that blocked the president's first travel ban.Announcing his withdrawal, he said he would instead seek a third term as governor of the north-western state.Anthony's take:Mr Inslee was an accomplished congressman and has been a popular governor. It looks like Washington will get to keep him as he runs for another term as governor.Despite reaching the needed donors to participate in the next debate, he failed to poll over 1%, and therefore won't get another chance on the debate stage.He has the kind of resume that once upon a time might have made him a top-tier candidate - as governors love to show off their executive level chops - but the times have changed.Mike Gravel 05/13/1930 Veteran ex-senator Mike Gravel has called it quits. Or, more precisely, the two teenagers who convinced Gravel to say he was running for president have said he's calling it quits.Their stated goal was to get their candidate onto the debate stage, where they said he would hector his moderate opponents about their hawkish foreign policy views and call for government reforms. That was always a longshot, and now that the qualification requirements are going up it's a near-impossibility.The 89-year-old will probably best be remembered for reading the Pentagon Papers into the congressional record as a US senator and his more visible presidential campaign in 2008.Anthony's take:Mike Gravel never left the state of Alaska to campaign for president.His candidacy essentially consisted of snide tweets from his teenage managers bashing Democratic candidates like Cory Booker, Kamala Harris and Joe Biden.They're off to do a fellowship at the far-left Jacobin Magazine now, as well as using the $114,000 (£94,000) they raised from more than 65,000 donations to start the "Gravel Institute" - which they say will publish "leftist policy papers".And thus ends this strange footnote to the 2020 Democratic presidential race.Eric Swalwell 11/16/1980 California congressman Eric Swalwell ended his short-lived bid for the White House in early July after failing to break into the top tier of candidates. His most notable moment during the first debates in June was when he called on 76-year-old Joe Biden to "pass the torch" to a younger generation. The former vice president replied: "I'm still holding on to that torch."Announcing his decision, Swalwell said: "I want to narrow this field and let others have their shot so that we can get a nominee that can beat Donald Trump."Anthony's take:Eric Swalwell exited the race as he entered it - with little fanfare and scant media attention.While he had a place on the stage at the first Democratic debate, his performance didn't translate into any additional interest and the money, such as there was, dried up.Meanwhile, back in Swalwell's safely Democratic California House district, potential challengers were beginning to eye his seat. The longer he stayed on the presidential trail, the greater the chance an upstart could replace him. So rather than risk an extended presidential campaign, he heads back to California to ensure he still has a political home next year.Wayne Messam 06/07/1974 Florida mayor Wayne Messam, the 45-year-old son of Jamaican immigrants, ended his campaign in November.He became the first black mayor of the southern Florida city of Miramar in 2015 after unseating a 16-year incumbent. A former star athlete at university, he then went on to open a successful construction company. Anthony's take:Wayne Messam's presidential campaign always existed more in theory than in fact. He seldom actively campaigned, and there never was much of an organisation behind him.He did manage to generate a few headlines and land some media interviews when he kicked things off, so if that was his primary goal… mission accomplished.Source : BBC NEWS

McGreaham, died at hospitals a few hours later. Kelly had been dismissed from UM once and was on the verge of another dismissal because of falling grades. Ms. Ball's classroom had recently moved across the campus, something Barry didn't know at the time. He ran across the roof and jumped down into the courtyard before entering the building and starting his search. After some time, he finally gave up the hunt, yelled out "Homecoming, homecoming," and sprayed the school's foyer with 30 rounds of ammunition. His bullets struck windows and the ceiling, but none of the dozen or so students who were also in the foyer at the time. However, a male student was injured by flying debris. Principal Ray Williams arrived after Barry had fired his last shot to confront him. Barry threw both rifles at Ray, saying "I did it." Ray had Barry sit down and wait for the police while he inspected his students for injuries. Barry offered no resistance. He was wearing a white T-shirt under a khaki-colored vest with flap pockets, blue jeans and cowboy boots when he was arrested. Over the weekend, it was discovered that Barry had killed Dallas karate instructor Jimmy Glen Wilson and wounded Rudy Smedley earlier in the week with the submachine gun. He is charged with attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated battery. One student was critically injured and treated for a neck wound.May 16, 1986 Cokeville, Wyoming 2 (both perpetrators) 74 (one by gunfire)Cokeville Elementary School hostage crisis: 43-year-old former town marshal David Young, and his 47-year-old wife, Doris Young, took 136 children and eighteen adults hostage at Cokeville Elementary School. Doris Young accidentally detonated a bomb she was carrying during the standoff, injuring herself and 73 others. David Young then shot and killed Doris, shot and wounded a teacher, and then committed suicide.December 4, 1986 Lewistown, Montana 1 314-year-old Kristofer Hans intended to shoot his French teacher at Fergus High School, for a failing grade. Instead, Henrietta Smith, who was substituting for LaVonne Simonfy, was shot in the face and died. Hans fired several other shots as he fled, wounding vice principal John Moffatt, and two students. He then ran about a mile to his home, where he was arrested after the police surrounded his house. A classmate said Hans had repeatedly threatened to kill Ms. Simonfy, saying, "I'm going to blow Simonfy's head off." He was charged as an adult, convicted and sentenced to 206 years in prison.February 4, 1987 Northridge, California 2 (including the perpetrator) 035-year-old associate professor of Computer Science Djamshid (Amir) Asgari was confronted in the Engineering Building of California State University, Northridge by 25-year-old graduate student Fawwaz Abdin. Abdin was angry about a low grade Asgari had given him a year earlier, which caused him to be put on academic probation. After Asgari refused to change his grade, Abdin shot him twice, then himself. After reloading his gun in a girls' restroom, he was confronted by physical education teacher, Kat Finkbeiner, who tried to stop him; she was wounded twice. He then entered a third-grade classroom and shot toward the students, killing 8-year-olds Shequila Tawoon Bradley and Tequila Maria Thomas, and wounding five others. Ference was in critical condition but survived.March 27, 1990 Brooklyn, New York 0 1A black youth was taunted with racial slurs by three white youths in the stairwell of a public school in the Bensonhurst area of Brooklyn. The 14-year-old was then shot and slightly wounded, because he had acted as peacemaker when the same boys had clashed with another black teen the month before.September 11, 1990 San Antonio, Texas 0 33 students were wounded when gunfire broke out at Sam Houston High School. He instead killed 11-year-old Alejandro Vargas, a bystander and student at the school.September 18, 1991 Crosby, Texas 1 017-year-old Arthur Jermel Jack, was killed by 15-year-old LaKeeta Cadoree, in the cafeteria at Crosby High School.November 1, 1991 Iowa City, Iowa 6 (including the perpetrator) 1University of Iowa shooting: 28-year-old former graduate student, Gang Lu, killed four members of University of Iowa's faculty and a research student, and seriously wounded another student. 47-year-old professor of physics and astronomy, Christoph K. Goertz, 45-year-old associate professor of physics and astronomy, Robert Alan Smith, 44-year-old chairman of the physics and astronomy department, Dwight R. Nicholson, 56-year-old associate vice president for academic affairs, Dr. Theresa Anne Cleary, shot in the head and died the following day, and 27-year-old research investigator in physics and astronomy, Dr. Shan Linhua. 23-year-old Miya Rodolfo-Sioson, Dr. Cleary's temporary student receptionist in the grievance office, survived but was left paralyzed from the neck down. Dye Jr. shot his bully Gregg Johnson in the head with a .22-caliber pistol in the school cafeteria. Gregg was rushed to Children's Hospital in Columbus where doctors found the bullet and traced its path. It had entered between Gregg's eyes and traveled the nasal sinuses where it shattered bones. Its trajectory was parallel to the bottom of the skull and was deflected by part of the skull base. This deflection sent the bullet on a downward path, to the adenoids.May 1, 1992 Olivehurst, California 4 10Lindhurst High School shooting: Former student, 20-year-old Eric Houston, killed three students and one teacher, and wounded nine other students and teacher before surrendering to police. Houston was later sentenced to death and remains on California's death row.September 11, 1992 Amarillo, Texas 0 7Following a pep rally, in a hallway near the activity center of Palo Duro High School, for the evening football match-up against Hereford High, 17 year old Randy Earl Matthews shot and wounded 7 students with a .22 caliber pistol. Matthews had attended the school for 9 days when the incident occurred and was believed to have been bullied at his previous school in Memphis Texas. Matthews was charged with one count attempted murder, five counts aggravated assault, and one count of unlawfully carrying a weapon onto school grounds. He served eight years.October 19, 1992 The Bronx, New York 0 3Two 14-year-old girls and a 16-year-old boy were shot at outside a Bronx high school.November 4, 1992 Detroit, Michigan 0 1111 students were hit by gunfire during a four-hour period in three separate school incidents, five were hospitalized. Six students at Finney High School were grazed by buckshot after three ski-masked gunmen opened fire in a crowded hallway. A 14-year-old was in custody for shooting three Foch Middle School students as they passed by the Marcus Garvey Academy. In the third incident, 16-year-old DeWayne Boyd was hit in the chest, when shots were fired at two Mumford High School students.December 14, 1992 Great Barrington, Massachusetts 2 4Wayne Lo, a Taiwanese-born American, opened fire at Bard College at Simon's Rock. He killed one student and a professor, and wounded four people. Lo was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murders.January 6, 1993 Brentwood, New York 0 1Brentwood High School. Former student, Matthew Hunter, was shot by two gunmen during a basketball game between Brentwood High School and Sachem High School. The assault was over a dispute about the theft of a gold chain.January 18, 1993 Grayson, Kentucky 2 0East Carter High School shooting: 17-year-old Scott Pennington, a student at East Carter High School, fatally shot his 48-year-old English teacher, Deanna McDavid, and 52-year-old head custodian, Marvin Hicks. Pennington was sentenced to life in prison without parole for 25 years.February 22, 1993 Los Angeles, California 1 015-year-old Robert Heard, fatally shot 17-year-old Michael Shean Ensley in the corridor of the Reseda High School's science building.April 15, 1993 Acushnet, Massachusetts 1 044-year-old David Taber entered Ford Middle School and took three hostages. During the hostage crisis, Taber killed school nurse Carol Day. Taber was found not guilty of the murder by reason of insanity.May 14, 1993 Irving, Texas 1 017-year-old Max Alexander Martinez, killed 17-year-old Jose Balderas, with a .38 caliber revolver in a hallway in Nimitz High School during a dispute over girls.May 24, 1993 Pennsburg, Pennsylvania 1 015-year-old student Jason Smith killed another student who had bullied him at Upper Perkiomen High School. He was charged as an adult and sentenced to between twelve and twenty-five years in prison.September 17, 1993 Sheridan, Wyoming 1 (the perpetrator) 429-year-old Kevin Newman, wounded four students before killing himself at Central Junior High School.November 4, 1993 New Britain, Connecticut 1 018-year-old Miguel DeJesus, was gunned down on the steps of New Britain High School. Rival gang members, 24-year-old Maurice Flanagan and 23-year-old Thomas Mejia, were charged.December 1, 1993 Wauwatosa, Wisconsin 1 0Wauwatosa West High School shooting: 21-year-old former student, Leonard D. McDowell, shot 46-year-old associate principal, Dale Breitlow, three times with a revolver in a second-floor hallway of Wauwatosa West High School. McDowell was found guilty of the murder and sane at the time of the shooting, he was sentenced to life in prison. His sentence was upheld by the state Court of Appeals in April 1997.January 24, 1994 Columbia, South Carolina 1 018-year-old Floyd Eugene Brown, shot fellow Eau Claire High School student, 17-year-old Earnest Dunlap, following an argument the week before. Brown was arrested shortly after at his home. A 16-year-old boy was also arrested for kicking Dunlap after the shooting. A jury later acquitted Brown of murder.January 31, 1994 Seattle, Washington 1 024-year-old Darrell Cloud, a former student at Whitman Middle School in North Seattle, killed 45-year-old Neal Summers, who had sexually abused Cloud since he was thirteen. Cloud served nine years in prison. He later received a $250,000 settlement in a civil suit against Seattle Schools, charging that Summers had not been adequately supervised.February 18, 1994 Spartanburg, South Carolina 0 1At around 10 p.m., 24-year-old Roosevelt Johnson was shot in the leg, after a basketball game at Spartanburg High School.March 1, 1994 Boonville, Missouri 2 033-year-old Dante D. Hayes, a hunter and ex-convict, killed 58-year-old Richard Vancena, a cafeteria manager, and 33-year-old Robin Michelle Coleman, a cook, in the mess hall of Kemper Military School and College. He was drunk and looking for his wife Anna Hayes with whom he had a fight the night before. No students were harmed. Hayes was layer convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to life without parole.April 12, 1994 Butte, Montana 1 010-year-old Jason Osmanson, teased because his parents had AIDS, killed an 11-year-old student on the playground of Margaret Leary Elementary School. Osmanson was sent to a private residential treatment center.April 21, 1994 Nashville, Tennessee 1 014-year-old Jeremy Bryant, killed 13-year-old Terrence Murray, in music class at J.T. Moore Middle School.October 12, 1994 Greensboro, North Carolina 1 (the perpetrator) 1After being suspended for smoking, 16-year-old Nicholas Atkinson, returned to Grimsley High School with a 9 mm pistol. After wounding assistant principal, Bill Whites, Atkinson took his own life.October 17, 1994 Chicago, Illinois 0 1A 16-year-old female student was shot in the thigh outside Hubbard High School when a teenage boy rode past on a bicycle and fired into a crowd. It is believed the shooting was meant for rival gang members, but the girl was hit instead. The boy lived in the neighborhood.November 7, 1994 Wickliffe, Ohio 1 5 (including the perpetrator)Wickliffe Middle School shooting: 37-year-old former student, Keith A. Ledeger, killed 41-year-old custodian, Pete Christopher, at Wickliffe Middle School, and wounded 47-year-old assistant principal, Jim Anderson, 47-year-old police officer, Thomas Schmidt, and 50-year-old teacher, Lowell Grimm, before being injured and taken into custody. Ledeger was sentenced to 57 years in prison, and died in prison in 2011.December 14, 1994 Albany, New York 0 1Ralph J. Tortorici, 26, a military veteran and psychology major at the State University of New York at Albany held hostage a large lecture hall from 9:10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Tortorici, armed with a .270-caliber rifle with more than two dozen rounds of ammunition and a hunting knife, walked into the ancient history class of Hans Pohlsander, saying, "Don't worry. Nobody move. You guys are getting held hostage." The standoff ended when Tortorici had his gun taken away by Jason McEnaney, a 19-year-old student. McEnaney was shot in the leg, groin, and abdomen in the exchange. Tortorici suffered from a well-document history of mental illness, argued during the hostage crisis that the government had implanted a control chip in his head during a procedure at Albany Medical Center, and ultimately committed suicide in 1999 in prison while serving a 15 1/2 year sentence.January 12, 1995 Seattle, Washington 0 2A 15-year-old student at Garfield High School left school during the day and returned with his grandfather's handgun. He was found guilty of attempted murder and assault in July 2006, and will be held in prison until he turns twenty five years old.March 14, 2006 Reno, Nevada 0 2Pine Middle School shooting: In the hallway of Pine Middle School, 14-year-old James Scott Newman, injured two 14-year-old classmates, Alexander Rueda and Kenzie McKeon, with a revolver belonging to his parents. Two students received minor wounds. Newman was subdued by a physical education teacher. The youth was arrested and charged as an adult for attempted murder, use of a deadly weapon and use of a firearm by a minor. He later pleaded guilty to charges of two counts of battery with a deadly weapon, and was sentenced as a juvenile. Newman was sentenced to house arrest until he completed two-hundred hours of community service.August 24, 2006 Essex Junction, Vermont 2 3 (including the perpetrator)Christopher Williams, 26, shot his girlfriend's mother, Linda Lambesis, 57 at her home and from there he went to Essex Elementary School where Andrea, his girlfriend, worked. He was described as extremely quiet and lonely. During the rampage he wore a black T-shirt, a russet vest, a backwards baseball cap, black military cargo pants, black boots, and grip gloves. Mendez later died of his injuries. Cosgaya-Alvarez was arrested a few days later in Seattle and was charged with murder. Armed with three guns, Maye wounded the delivery man, then the dorm monitor. Lastly, Maye shot himself in a suicide attempt. He survived and was convicted of two charges of malicious wounding, two counts of using a gun in a felony; burglary; and shooting in an occupied building. He was sentenced to fourteen years of prison in November 2009, and was ordered by a judge to pay more than $62,000 in restitution to his victims for lost wages.May 18, 2009 Cambridge, Massachusetts 1 020-year-old Jabrai Copney, 23-year-old Jason Aquino, and 19-year-old Blayn Jiggetts, of New York City, invited 21-year-old Justin Cosby, of Cambridge, into a Harvard College dormitory. After trying to rob him of a pound of marijuana, they shot him. The victim, Cosby, was pronounced dead early the next day. Copney turned himself in three days later, and was convicted of murder. His partners pleaded guilty to armed robbery and manslaughter. His girlfriend, 21-year-old Brittany Smith, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact, firearm possession, and misleading a grand jury.May 18, 2009 Larose, Louisiana 1 (the perpetrator) 015-year-old Larose-Cut Off Middle School student, Justin Doucet, carried his backpack to a restroom, where he put on camouflage clothes and took out a semi-automatic handgun before storming into a nearby classroom. He attempted to shoot a teacher, Jessica Plaisance, but the gun did not fire. Podila, and biology professors, 50-year-old, Maria Ragland Davis and 52-year-old Adriel D. Johnson. She also wounded biology professors, Luis Rogelio Cruz-Vera and Joseph G. Leahy, and staff assistant, Stephanie Monticciolo. Police said that the shooting was gang-related.October 8, 2010 Carlsbad, California 0 241-year-old Brendan O'Rourke climbed over a fence and opened fire with a handgun in a playground of Kelly Elementary School, which had 230 students; two second-grade female students were grazed in the arms before O'Rourke was subdued by a construction worker. He was found guilty of seven counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to 189 years to life in prison.November 29, 2010 Marinette, Wisconsin 1 (the perpetrator) 015-year-old Samuel Hengel, took 23 students and a teacher hostage inside a classroom of Marinette High School for five hours. He had stormed into the class, firing with a handgun at a movie projector. Police persuaded Hengel to release the hostages. After officers entered the building, Hengel shot himself in the head. He died the next day.December 6, 2010 Aurora, Colorado 0 1In a gang-related attack outside Aurora Central High School, a 17-year-old girl was paralyzed. She was one of a group of students outside the school. 20-year-old Luis Enrique Guzman-Rincon, had fired shots from a car trying to hit gang rivals. Guzman-Ricon was sentenced to thirty-five years in prison.January 5, 2011 Omaha, Nebraska 2 (including the perpetrator) 2At Millard South High School, 18-year-old student, Robert Butler Jr., killed assistant principal Dr. Vicki Kaspar and wounded principal Curtis Case before opening fire at police in the front office area, causing the school nurse to be wounded by gunshot debris. Butler then drove to a parking lot and shot himself as police cornered him.March 25, 2011 Martinsville, Indiana 0 1Michael Phelps, a 15-year-old suspended student, returned to Martinsville West Middle School with a handgun. In the entrance of the school, Phelps shot 15-year-old Chance Jackson twice in the abdomen, critically wounding him. Phelps fled the school and dropped the handgun; he was arrested shortly after. Jackson had to undergo surgery three times to save his life; he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Phelps was convicted of attempted murder in August 2011, and was sentenced to thirty years in prison and five years of probation.March 31, 2011 Houston, Texas 1 5Multiple gunmen opened fire during a powder puff football game at Worthing High School. One man, an 18-year-old former student named Tremaine De Ante' Paul, died. The gunman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. She was hospitalized for two months in a serious condition. Underwood was arrested and charged with attempted murder. He was convicted of attempted first-degree murder and sentenced to fifteen years in prison.December 8, 2011 Blacksburg, Virginia 2 (including the perpetrator) 022-year-old, Ross Truett Ashley, part-time business student at Radford University, killed a police officer engaged in an unrelated traffic stop on the campus of Virginia Tech, he then committed suicide in a nearby parking lot.December 9, 2011 Edinburg, Texas 0 2Two students were shot after school at Harwell Middle School in Edinburg, Texas while trying out for their school's basketball team. The shooting allegedly was done by an adult off campus, who was shooting at a target range.January 10, 2012 Houston, Texas 0 1A student opened fire with a handgun at North Forest High School, wounding another student. The shooter said that he had been confronted by three students who had been bullying him and he shot in self-defense. He hit a 16-year-old bystander in the leg. The 18-year-old suspect was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.February 27, 2012 Chardon, Ohio 3 3Chardon High School shooting: 17-year-old Thomas "T. J." Lane, took a semi-automatic handgun and a knife to Chardon High School, where he fired ten shots at a group of students sitting in the cafeteria. He killed three boys and wounded three other students. One 16-year-old died immediately, two others died the following day. Lane was arrested early the next morning while standing near his car. He was charged as an adult with murder, attempted murder, and firearms offenses. In March 2013, he was convicted and sentenced to three life sentences without the possibility of parole.March 6, 2012 Jacksonville, Florida 2 (including the perpetrator) 0A murder-suicide resulted in two deaths on the campus of the Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Shane Schumerth, a Spanish teacher who had been fired that morning returned to the campus in the early afternoon via a pedestrian entrance, armed with an AK-47 which he concealed in a guitar case. He entered the office of the Head of School, Dale Regan, and fired multiple shots, fatally wounding her. Schumerth then killed himself, in the office.April 2, 2012 Oakland, California 7 3Oikos University shooting: 43-year-old One L. Goh, was accused of shooting dead seven students with a handgun and wounding three others at Oikos University, a Christian college. He fled the scene, stealing a victim's car, and was apprehended hours later nearby. Goh was charged with seven counts of murder. In January 2013, Goh was determined to be mentally unfit for trial and committed for treatment.August 16, 2012 Memphis, Tennessee 0 2Two Hamilton High School students were wounded in the parking lot of the school. The attack was believed to be gang-related.August 27, 2012 Perry Hall, Maryland 0 115-year-old Robert Gladden, fired two shots with a shotgun inside the cafeteria at Perry Hall School. He hit a 17-year-old senior in the lower back, causing critical wounds. The youth has Down syndrome. Gladden was subdued by two school faculty members, and arrested. In February 2013, he was sentenced to thirty-five years in prison on attempted murder charges.September 7, 2012 Normal, Illinois 0 0A 14-year-old student fired multiple gunshots in a classroom ceiling at Normal Community High School, and was tackled by a teacher. Nobody was injured. The student was arrested and charged with sixteen felony counts.October 19, 2012 Chicago, Illinois 1 018-year-old Banner Academy South student, Terrance Wright, was killed during an attempted robbery. Wright was approached by five would-be robbers as he left the school about 3:40 p.m.. He was shot in the chest as he fought back when one assailant was going through his pockets. Wright had been picked on at his previous high school because he was gay, which led him to transfer to Banner.October 31, 2012 Los Angeles, California 0 4At a Halloween party on the University of Southern California campus, an argument escalated and 20-year-old Brandon Spencer, used a handgun to shoot rival gang member, Geno Hall, seven times, critically wounding him. Spencer wounded three other people, none were students at USC, they were hospitalized with less serious injuries. Spencer was arrested just minutes after the shooting, which took place outside USC's Grand Ballroom at around 11:30 p.m. In April 2014, he was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to forty years to life in prison.December 14, 2012 Newtown, Connecticut 28 (including the perpetrator) 2Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting: 20-year-old Adam Lanza, killed twenty-six people and himself. He first killed his mother at their shared home before taking her guns and driving to the school. Lanza brought four guns with him. He killed twenty first-grade children aged six and seven during the attack at school, along with six adults, including four teachers, the principal, and the school psychologist. Two other persons were injured. Lanza then killed himself as police arrived at the school.January 10, 2013 Taft, California 0 216-year-old student, Bryan Oliver, entered a science classroom of Taft Union High School with a shotgun and opened fire, critically wounding 16-year-old student Bowe Cleveland. He shot at but missed another student. The classroom teacher Ryan Heber convinced Oliver, to drop his weapon. He was later arrested. On January 14, he was charged with two counts of attempted murder and assault with a firearm. He was convicted and accepted a plea deal with a sentence of 27 years and 4 months. According to the attorney for the Cleveland family, they were not satisfied with the sentence.January 12, 2013 Detroit, Michigan 0 1A 16-year-old Osborn High School student was shot and wounded after a basketball game.January 15, 2013 St. Louis, Missouri 0 2A 34-year-old gunman wounded an administrator in his office on the fourth floor of Stevens Institute of Business and Arts. The suspected gunman, Sean Johnson, a part-time student, wounded himself in a stairwell. Both the administrator and Johnson were hospitalized in stable conditions. Johnson was charged with three felony charges, including assault.January 15, 2013 Hazard, Kentucky 3 0Two people were killed and a third person was wounded at the parking lot of Hazard Community and Technical College. The third victim, 12-year-old Taylor Cornett, died from her wounds the next day. 21-year-old Dalton Lee Stidham, was arrested and charged with three counts of murder. The shooting happened after high school basketball games held on the campus, where Lawson had been a spectator. He pointed a handgun at his roommate and threatened to shoot him in their room; he released the roommate, who ran out and called 9-1-1. Seevakumaran then fatally shot himself in the head. About three hours after the MIT shooting and after carjacking a vehicle, Tamerlan died in a gunfight with police in Watertown, Massachusetts. Another officer was seriously wounded. Shot in the neck and hiding in a boat parked nearby, Dzhokhar was arrested 18 hours later, and hospitalized in critical condition. No one was injured.June 7, 2013 Santa Monica, California 6 (including the perpetrator) 42013 Santa Monica shooting: 23-year-old John Zawahri, began a killing spree at his home. After killing his 55-year-old father, Samir "Sam" Zawahri, and 25-year-old brother, Chris Zawahri, he set the house ablaze. Dressed all in black with body armor and wielding an AR-15-type semi-automatic rifle, Zawahri carjacked 41-year-old Laura Siska, shooting 50-year-old Debra Fine, as she attempted to intervene, before forcing Siska to drive to Santa Monica College. Upon arriving on the college campus, Zawahri began shooting at passing vehicles, including a police car and a city bus, leaving three people with minor injuries. Zawahri next targeted a Ford Explorer, killing the driver, 68-year-old campus groundskeeper, Carlos Navarro Franco, and fatally wounding the passenger, his 26-year-old daughter Marcela Diaz-Franco, a student at the college, who died two days later. 68-year-old Margarita Gomez, who was collecting cans outside the library, died after being shot in the abdomen and chest. Zawahri opened fire on students who were trying to run away. It ended at the college library where he opened fire on students studying for finals, before being fatally wounded in an exchange of gunfire with responding police officers.August 20, 2013 Decatur, Georgia 0 0Armed with an AK-47 and other weapons, 20-year-old Michael Brandon Hill fired six shots inside the front office of Ronald E. After talking with school bookkeeper, Antoinette Tuff in the front office, he was persuaded to surrender before anyone was hurt. Two others were injured in the shooting. He was hospitalized with minor injuries. An 18-year-old male student was apprehended without further incident. The suspected gunman is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, carrying a concealed gun, possessing and discharging a firearm, and carrying a firearm onto educational property. The shooting was believed related to a dispute between the suspect and the victim.October 4, 2013 Pine Hills, Florida 0 2A 16-year-old student was shot in the hip outside Agape Christian Academy after a fight broke out at 2 p.m.. An innocent bystander was hit by a stray bullet or shrapnel. The two victims were treated for minor injuries. The suspected shooter reportedly fled in a car with several other males, and was not caught.October 21, 2013 Sparks, Nevada 2 (including the perpetrator) 212-year-old seventh-grade student Jose Reyes opened fire with a handgun at the basketball courts of Sparks Middle School, injuring one student in the shoulder. Michael Landsberry, a teacher and veteran, tried to intervene and was killed by Reyes. Reyes also wounded a student trying to help the teacher. Reyes then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. The shooting happened before classes, and the school was evacuated and was closed for the week.November 2, 2013 Greensboro, North Carolina 0 1A 21-year-old student was wounded at North Carolina A&T State University. The victim was hospitalized for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The university was temporarily locked down that night. No suspects are in custody.November 3, 2013 Lithonia, Georgia 0 2A Stephenson High School student and a janitor were shot in an apparent confrontation between football team members and a group of teens who were not attending the school. In October 2014, the shooter was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison.December 13, 2013 Centennial, Colorado 2 (including the perpetrator) 018-year-old Karl Pierson, shot 17-year-old student Claire Davis in the head, fatally injuring her, in a hallway in Arapahoe High School. Pierson then took his own life. Pierson was armed with a shotgun, three Molotov cocktails, and a machete. His intention was to shoot the librarian who had disciplined him. Claire Davis died from her injuries on December 21, 2013.December 19, 2013 Fresno, California 0 1Four teens (16, 16, 16 and 17 years old) entered Edison High School in what was believed as a gang-initiation process. After accosting a 62-year-old woman about a mile away from school grounds, they found an athletic trainer who taught at Edison High and shot him several times in the leg and stomach.January 9, 2014 Jackson, Tennessee 0 1A 16-year-old student was charged with bringing a gun to school at Liberty Technology Magnet High School and shooting a classmate in the thigh. The victim was waiting to pick his son up from a weekly Polish culture class. He was shot in the head. He was killed through his car window. He was brought to Edward Hospital in Naperville. The incident disrupted the travel plans of students and campus activities for several days. A 15-year-old was struck in the shoulder but went into surgery and was expected to recover fully. When he returned, he shot a female student and the science teacher, identified as Jason Seamen. Seamen was shot in the abdomen, hip, and forearm. Cuffie is in custody and charged with first-degree murder.December 13, 2018 Richmond, Indiana 1 (the perpetrator) 014-year-old Brandon Clegg attempted a shooting on Dennis Intermediate School. He took two guns and threatened to kill her boyfriend if he did not drive him to the school. Informed of his intentions by his own mother, police arrived just before he was able to begin his attack. After exchanging shots with officers, Clegg shot his way through a locked glass door and entered the school, where he continued to shoot at officers. However, as the second group was being escorted out 15-year old Anjanique Wright in the group was shot and later pronounced dead at the hospital. One student reportedly had minor injuries, and the substitute was arrested.April 1, 2019 Prescott, Arkansas 0 1A 14-year-old male student with a concealed weapon shot a 14-year-old classmate at Prescott High School in what police described as a “premeditated attack”. The victim was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.
