Yes, the CIS gained the advantage three times during the war.The first was early in the war, shortly after the Battle of Geonosis. The droid army mobilized much faster than the Republic, and hit targets across the Republic. The GAR was hard pressed to turn the tide, losing battles at Jabiim and Hypori.The second was when the Bulwark fleet broke the siege of Foerost. Foerost was a CIS planet located behind Separatist lines. However, the Republic kept it blockaded until Admiral Dua Ningo used the newly constructed Bulwark fleet to break out of the siege. Ningo terrorized the Republic until he was stopped at the Battle of Anaxes.Finally, we have Operation Durge’s Lance. General Grievous launched an attack down the Correlian Run. It isn’t well known, but the British could still have put an amphibious task force together even if Hermes, Invincible, and Fearless were gone. It would have taken longer and so presumably Argentine defenses would have been strengthened considerably compared with what the British faced in the actual war. But a counterattack could still have been launched.First, there was another light fleet aircraft carrier in reserve that the British could have reactivated. It had been in “commando carrier” (LPH) and then, briefly, anti-submarine carrier configuration prior to being decommissioned in 1979 and so it did not have the “ski jump” used for Harrier launches, though this could surely have been added in short order. Despite damage from a boiler fire and considerable repair and refits that would have been necessary to bring her back to active service, the Royal Navy had already decided that Bulwark was going to serve in the Falklands War. As it happened, the brand new HMS Illustrious was rushed to completion and so the Bulwark reactivation did not proceed. But it is not difficult to envision a Royal Navy task force centered around Illustrious and Bulwark instead of Hermes and Invincible. Presumably a US-UK contingency plan to supply a US Navy LPH (probably the USS Iwo Jima) to the British as a stopgap would still have been in place for a 1983–84 Falklands War, as it was in the actual conflict in 1982. Here again we are talking about a year or at most two years after the actual war took place. This is because that is the time frame within which the RN was originally going to divest itself of the ships in question, and in any case the increasingly unpopular military junta then governing Argentina could not have waited much longer to attack the Falklands and still hope to use their capture as a springboard to remaining in power. I doubt that HMS Fearless would have been scrapped within the 1983–84 timeline, and while reactivating her would have involved considerable work (as it would have with Bulwark), nevertheless this was a ship that had only recently been in active status. And there were plenty of Reserve vessels and merchant and passenger ships that would have been taken up into service as improvised troop transports—again, as they were in the actual Falklands War. Meanwhile, a British nuclear submarine blockade of the Falklands and also of mainland Argentine ports would surely have ensued. If anything, Royal Navy submarine and commando operations would have been more extensive and more destructive than they were in the real war.In the end, while this later version of the Falkland Islands clash between Britain and Argentina would probably have been longer, bloodier, and more wide-ranging, the British would still have won. They still had too much firepower for Argentina to overcome. As long as London had sufficient political will to absorb the larger losses necessary to force the conflict to its military conclusion, the Union Jack would have flown in Stanley once again.
