We have great museums. Our Everson museum of Art was designed by I. M. Pie, and has, among other things, an amazing ceramics collection. the Canal Museum is housed in the last remaining gear lock building on what used to be the Erie Canal. The Onondaga Historical Museums has some fascinating stuff, including some of the very first typewriters. Syracuse has some beautiful parks. Glenwood park is a hidden gem that goes along a ravine and looks like wilderness, but is right in the city. Burnet park has a golf course and a pretty neat zoo. There's a festival or public party of some sort going on almost every weekend, and all of them are fun. Head a little south and you'll find apple farms galore-and you won't find better apples anywhere. Into Lacrosse? The Onondagas were the inventors of the game. Check out their stadium on the Onondaga nation on Route 11. Did you know that Syracuse is known as the Salt City? When it was first settled by Europeans, they discovered natural salt springs on the southern shore of Onondaga Lake. A whole industry sprung up around evaporating the water and refining the salt. And yes, there's a Salt Museum next to Onondaga lake. In the spring, it's pretty interesting to see how maple sugar is made-we have a lot of sugar maples around here.If you are into geology, we have three of the very few merimetic lakes in the world right in Onondaga county-one at Clark Reservation, and two at Green Lakes Park. In contrast to these very deep lakes, the county also has Oneida Lake, which is so shallow it turns over 8 times a year. Most lakes turn over twice (deep water circulating up to the surface, surface water going down to the bottom). Merimetic lakes are so deep that their top layer and bottom layer do not even mix, much less turn over. Down in Tully they had a mud avalanche that took out several houses and a road. It was years ago, but you can still see the mud walls and the submerged houses. Skaneateles Lake, just to the southwest, is the cleanest lake on the continent. It's so clean that it is used for Syracuse's water supply without filtration, and it tastes wonderful. The same ice age that left us merimetic lakes and the finger lakes also left drumlins; long, narrow, north to south facing hills that were deposited when the glaciers retreated north.Check out Labrador Hollow, Tinkers falls, Pratts Falls, Chittenango Falls, Beaver Lake and Highland Forest for beautiful places to hike and enjoy nature. If you want to know more about the suffragettes, check out the Matilda Joslyn Gage house in Fayetteville. Walking around Oakwood Cemetery, right next to Syracuse University, is restful and beautiful. See if you can find the hidden lion statue near the chapel. I hope this has given you some ideas. I can probably come up with more if you ask.

Burt is incorrect. It does still exist, it's just not still owned by founder Joe Conforte, it’s now owned by Lance Gilman. It IS in Lockwood, as neither Washoe (where Reno is) nor Clark County (where Las Vegas is) allows brothels. I have visited but as a “tourist” not a customer, as I'm a heterosexual female. My mom and I went because she heard you could take tours and thought it would be interesting, and it was.We walked to the main entrance which takes you into a gentleman's club-type sports bar where an older, dam, leathery-skinned but pretty blonde working girl in a hot pink bikini met us. We told her what we were there for and she agreed to show us around so we followed her to the back of the bar and into a big, bright commercial kitchen area. She told us this was where they cooked all the customer meals and anything the girls wanted.Then she handed each of us pink menu cards that we thought were for food but we were badly mistaken. These were the brothel offerings “Pleasure Menus” and they were not cheap! Prices started at $150 and went up from there, and this was eight years ago. But there was a disclaimer at the bottom stating that everything was negotiable, so maybe you can get a better deal is you play your cards right. This IS a gambling town, so what the heck, it might be worth trying your luck.The rest of the tour consisted of our guide showing us the main building which is the most expensive “playroom.” It has a hot tub in the master suite, a massage table room, and a separate S&M room. It is also outfitted as the Conforte museum and has a bunch of historic memorabilia, news and TV documentary videos, and clippings about him and his legal issues. She gave us all kinds of great information about Joe and his story that I really enjoyed hearing about. There are six or eight other buildings lined up to the south but we weren't able to tour those. She told us those were the other guest rooms, which could be used for temporary encounters or rented for multiple nights (at extreme expense).Being early in the afternoon in the middle of the week we figured it would be a good time to check it out, and we were right. There was absolutely nothing going on so we didn't feel like we made our guide miss out on any business. We each tipped her $20 for her time and called it a day. It was fun and interesting but with the rooms being in what are effectively fortified construction trailers, it has a rather lowbrow, second rate feel to it that I didn't expect.
