Mental Status examinations are performed by health care practitioners as part of neurological, psychological, psychiatric, or medical evaluations. These examinations are generally fairly brief in duration and limited in scope. For example, when I perform a neurological examination I examine the patient’s motor, sensory, cerebellar, reflexes, gait, and cranial nerve systems, and I perform a mental status examination. The mental status portion of the evaluation may be a formal examination and include tests such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, or the Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination. These examinations take between 5 and 8 minutes to administer. Sometimes a clock drawing test is administered. This generally takes 1–2 minutes. Alternatively, I may do a less formal and much briefer mental/cognitive assessment as part of the mental status examination.Neuropsychological tests are formal tests that are typically performed by neuropsychologists. The tests typically take 2–6 hours. They generally include the administration of several formal tests of cognition. The examiner also generally obtains a detailed history of the patient's medical, mental health, and neurological state. A review of neurodiagnostic studies such as CT, MRI, or PET of the brain, and blood tests may also be done. The neuropsychologist provides scoring for the various tests that were administered as well as interpretation of the results. Generally, the neuropsychologist makes recommendations for further testing, or in some cases for follow-up testing.
