PDF Editor FAQ

Which phrases or words do you feel hinder understanding between progressives and conservatives, the elimination of which would allow for less enmity and a better quality of discussion?

Well, first, we need to address this line:…the elimination of which would allow for less enmity and a better quality of discussion?Conservatives view it as against productive discussion, or even decency, to ban words, thoughts, or ideas that cause enmity or are even offensive. Here, in this question, we see a very subtle, and I’m sure innocent in origin, attempt at that which conservatives now loathe… societal political correctness and censorship. This entire question is trying to create a new and very broad list, by both sides of words, phrases, and ideas that should not be allowed to be said. Instead of reaching a better understanding across society (which is the only thing that will actually promote less enmity), it seeks to eliminate difficult to understand ideas for the sake of comfort and blissful ignorance. With that said, here are words I don’t want to eliminate, but illuminate people on the fact that when a conservative or progressive says them, they are literally speaking different languages.JusticeConservative definition - when one is given what they have earned; either punishment for their crimes suitable to the damage they individually caused, or rewarded for their labors suitable for the benefit they provided to society. A “just” society is one where people predictably get the outcomes they would expect for their actions. An injustice is when an individual either works hard and isn’t rewarded or commits a crime and isn’t punished.Case in point: A pair of twins; one a criminal, the other an entrepreneur. No one cares if they are black or white.Progressive definition - fairness or equality; everyone’s outcomes in life are tied to your identity (the groups you were born belonging to), which is out of your control. For that reason, society must be changed so that all possible identities start out on an equal footing, stated as equality of opportunity. Continued inequality (real or imagined) between groups (even those we should expect in a fair society), however, leads to “equality of outcomes,” meaning everyone has the same ending no matter what they did to earn it. Equal outcomes regardless of effort is the exact opposite of the conservative definition of justice.Case in point: the many times debunked wage gap for women and affirmative action.SocietyConservative definition - society is best when it is maintained through a combination of institutions working in conjunction to create a general moral system that is healthy, happy, and productive for all citizens. An example of this a combination of a just legal system, in conjunction with broad membership in religious bodies, free to practice openly and without reservation, and buttressed by strong traditional family relationships. When all of these are working and interlaced, it creates a moral mesh for the purposes of raising children that mitigates the need for direct intervention through strict government laws.Case in point: We must change to society so that parents are freer and more empowered to decide how they want their children educated through [fewer laws] and [a return to local governance].Progressive definition - The progressive view wishes for all people to only make only right choices, for only right reasons, in every possible case, free of institutional indoctrination, traditions, class consideration, or other social structures that artificially manipulate them into producing [progressive] injustices. To get to that perfect utopian ideal society, you must first pass a phase where the state is monolithic and an “enlightened moral majority” sets all values, culture norms, and behaviors until the people are freed from the effects of institutional bias. In the progressive view, society means “right acting people” and all institutions except those create “right acting people” (as determined by an enlightened moral majority) must be marginalized and absorbed by the monolithic state. This is necessary until we reach the ideal utopia where everyone is fixed of their institutional biases and said government is no longer necessary, though there is never a clear means on how you get rid of such a government once everyone is reliant upon it for their livelihood and moral foundation. In such a case, “society” really means “the laws governing society and personal behavior”, where other institutions are marginalized and their functions and powers are transferred to a secular and impersonal governing body.Case in point: We must change to society so that [identity group] never experiences [progressive injustice] by [passing this law.]Social Justice (Combining the concepts of Justice and Society)Conservative definition - the conservative definitions of “justice” and “society” are contradictory to the idea of social justice, as justice is the rewards and punishments conferred to an individual, and conferring them to an entire class or identity group is both immoral and a violation of civil rights.Progressive definition - passing laws to make all classes and identities perfectly equally in rewards, punishments, opportunities, and outcomes with no consideration of individual behavior but exclusively based on historical repression/privilege of the immutable characteristics of those involved.PrivilegeConservative definition - an unearned ease to gaining reward or avoiding punishment.Progressive definition - it actually means the same thing, but with the focus on “social” privilege is blanketed upon whole groups, many (or even most) of whom, do not fit the stereotype.Case in point: “American White Privilege”, which ignores 2010 census data showing that poor whites outnumber poor blacks by 3:1, or other reports that show the two groups’ poverty is caused by similar bad policy and not the color of their skin.IdentityConservative definition - Identity is a complicated mesh of an individual’s choices, lived experience, and inborn traits. It is not the mostly irrelevant bits of trivia about a person’s immutable nature as their choices have a far greater impact then their born nature.Progressive definition - immutable traits that place a person into a series of broad generalized categories that themselves have differing levels of privilege or oppression, and the combination of which determines the outcomes of their success or failure, regardless of the choices they make.DiversityConservative definition - meaningful differentiation of a population consisting of different views and values; necessary for evolution of practices to adapt to changes in the world be they social, technological, policy, or otherwise.Progressive definition - mandatory inclusivity of oppressed identity groups as a means of affirmative action.Care, as in “taking care of others”Conservative definition - the attention that each of us are obligated to give to others personally, as to not do so would not only fail to uplift them but lead to toxic narcissism in our own lives.Progressive definition - the mandatory redistribution of wealth from those with much to those how lack privilege through social justice, whereby third parties demand one group provide assistance to another, and usually takes the credit.HarmConservative definition - demonstrable suffering imposed upon an individual or group by another individual or group.Progressive definition - a range from the conservative definition to subjective feelings of being offended, convicted, insulted, or disagreement. This broadening of the definition of harm brings with it a furthering of the definition of other terms like “violence” and “safety”, creating the phenomenon of “your words are violence.” This justifies violence in return for “harmful words” as form of “self-defense,” and where “safe spaces” are required because people feel “traumatized” by harmful words.Racism/Sexism/______-phobic, bigotryConservative definition - explicitly and intentionally treating someone differently based on immutable characteristics. The Progressive Definition is actually one of the reasons why people find them so insufferable, because they literally apply a different rule for themselves then they do everyone else. I’ll use racism as the example.Progressive definition as applied to themselves - racism is natural and something everyone harbors to some extent, but we need to acknowledge our racist tendencies and work to squelch them. This squelching is not only in our own minds, such as the removal of both personal prejudice but also ignoring demonstrable facts and patterns that could be interpreted as racist; but also in acknowledging privilege through the passage of laws promoting social justice.Progressive definition as applied to others - your racism is evidence of a moral and educational failure. Because of your intolerance, you cannot be tolerated. Because you advocate for hate, your words promote violence. Therefore, because you and your words can neither be tolerated and are violent; intolerance, censorship, and violence against you are both tolerable and recommended, to achieve a more just society for everyone by any means necessary.Case in point - Donald Trump. “He is a racist, sexist, bigot, homophobe and must be stopped.” “Resist, Remove”. If progressives really believed what they said about themselves, that calling a person a racist isn’t something they should be offended of or afraid of… then there would be no reason to say that Donald Trump must be stopped. Furthermore, if they would really look at how they, as individuals, treat people extremely differently, they would understand why people get so defensive about the accusation. While it’s fine to not like his policies, or those of most conservatives, the way that the progressives talk about racism, sexism, and most forms of bigotry today shows a hypocritical attitude in how they treat themselves and how they treat others. More so, given this contradiction and the way they’ve framed the ideas of justice, society, and privilege, their punitive attacks against others suggests that their obsession with bigotry is as much a means to the pursuit of power as it ever was a demonstration of actually caring for the needs of anyone. These are only a few of the divisive words in that no one on either side really understands what the other is saying. Usually, this is because the meanings of words have changed so far among specific groups that the rest of the population no longer realizes they are advocating for reasonable sounding policies that are radically different in practice than what was implied by their meaning; some that have terrifying consequences contradictory to what anyone would have wanted, signifying a radical retreat from decency in the name of “progress”.Case in point - New York Set To Legalize Abortion Up To BirthIt’s no wonder then that many of these same people would like to ban phrases like identity politics, SJW, political correctness, safe space, virtue signalling, or criticizing extremist policies when they are written into modern legislature, because to do so makes it impossible to hold their beliefs accountable. So, while cutting out words that are viewed as harmful or not conducive to a civil society may seem like the expedient route, a better one would be to become knowledgeable that not all words mean what you think they do to everyone you talk to, and for those who change the language… come up with new words.Relaxed. Researched. Respectful. - War Elephant

What are your views on Trump's tweet saying "96-0 in the United States Senate. Congratulations America!" during the Coronavirus pandemic?

Hello! You mean this tweet:96-0 in the United States Senate. Congratulations AMERICA!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 26, 2020Sure, it’s a good and necessary thing that the relief package has passed. But they’re blowing through two trillion just to try to mitigate the damage that Donald Trump has negligently done to this country. But what you probably don’t know is that Moscow Mitch McConnell wasted ten precious days advancing a relief package laden with “poison pill” measures that according to the polls, were broadly opposed by Democrats, Republican and independents alike, and blocking provisions sponsored by Democrats that were popular across party lines. The political press reported the substance of these disputes as they usually do: Briefly, in the 8th or 9th paragraph of print pieces, and without any acknowledgment that Democrats were fighting for stuff that both Democrats and Republicans wanted. There was far more focus on the legislative process and various political calculations, which is also typical. As a result, those who just skimmed the headlines or caught a cable segment about the dispute would have had no idea what the parties were fighting over.At best, they took away a narrative of a relief package hobbled by partisan gridlock. More commonly, blame for holding up the vitally needed bill fell on Democrats, with headlines like, “Emergency Economic Rescue Plan in Limbo as Democrats Block Action” (New York Times), “Democrats block coronavirus response in fear of 2008 redux” (CNN) and “Senate Democrats block Republicans’ coronavirus stimulus bill 2nd time around” (Yahoo News). It’s hard to overstate how broadly the public supports what Democrats were trying to insert into the legislation.Congressional negotiators and the White House wrangled over a large number of issues, but there were two significant sticking points. First, following the regime’s lead, Republicans wanted to give the White House discretion over distributing hundreds of billions in corporate bailouts, and vigorously opposed Democratic efforts to attach conditions to that relief which would, among other things, prevent executives from pocketing the funds or enriching their shareholders rather than taking care of their workers.Trump’s claim that he would “be the oversight” for a huge amount of funding was clearly a non-starter. Meanwhile, most of the provisions Democrats fought for were recently proposed by Sen Elizabeth Warren, and Data for Progress conducted a survey to gauge public opinion about those measures. Other than barring bailed-out companies from buying back their stocks, which half of respondents didn’t understand well enough to form an opinion, they all proved to be extremely popular. https://filesforprogress.org/memos/accountable-bailouts.pdfAnd, unusually, they were popular across party lines. Republicans favored barring companies that received federal funds from laying off their workers by a 70-13 margin; they favored holding CEOs accountable for not complying with these rules 61-14; Republicans were in favor of a ban on dividends and bonuses by a 63-17 margin and 60 percent of Republicans approved of requiring shareholder approval of political spending against only 14 percent who opposed it. Pluralities of Republicans favored all of the other provisions tested. The other main point of contention centered on direct cash payments to keep individuals and households afloat. The bill Senate Republicans put together without Democratic input called for $1,200 payments for adults who pay federal income taxes, but only $600 for people with no federal tax bill. Given that the Earned Income Tax Credit and other benefits for lower-income households with kids bring many families below the tax threshold, this would have effectively given more money to those in less need. Democrats (who had offered adults $2,000 payments in their House bill) objected. Mitch McConnell blocked Democrats’ coronavirus bill for 10 days — and the press covered for himHere we don’t have clear-cut polling–I haven’t come across a survey that asked specifically about the Republicans’ regressive approach to these payments. But we can extrapolate from surveys that find overwhelming–and again, bipartisan–support for the idea of sending checks out to Americans generally. Eighty-two percent of respondents to an Ipsos poll favored direct cash relief, with only 11 percent opposed. It’s a safe bet that with that kind of support, most would side with Democrats that $600 per adult for lower-income households isn’t enough. https://www.ipsos.com/sites/default/files/ct/news/documents/2020-03/newsy_march_poll_covid-19_032420_0.pdfDemocrats won these fights, but not before ten more days of economic hardship for millions of people had passed. McConnell had laden down the bill with provisions that he knew Democrats would balk at in an attempt to make them bear responsibility for the economic crash. It was pure, bare-knuckled partisan politics at a time when people of all political views desperately needed Congress to stop playing games and offer some federal support. It was cruelly cynical, and it echoed Trump’s own strategy of calling to reopen schools and businesses so he can shift blame for the coming recession onto Democratic governors. Trump doesn't really want to restart the economy — he's preparing the ground to blame Democrats and the media for the coming recessionBut one would never know about any of this by skimming media reports about this “partisan standoff.”

opportunity and economic empowerment is both morally right and good economics, because discrimination, poverty and ignorance restrict growth, while investments in education, infrastructure and scientific and technological research increase it, creating more good jobs and new wealth for all of us."Bill Clinton"Never before in history has innovation offered promise of so much to say many in so short a time"Bill GatesTargetsDevelop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including regional and transborder infrastructure, to support economic development and human
