At 40, am I too old to start learning skateboarding, considering the risk of injuries?

I started skateboarding in the summer of 2014 when I was 41, wihtout any prior experience. Before even attempting to stand on a board, I took a one hour private lesson. Played around a little on my own for a few weeks after that and then took another one hour private lesson. After that I took a break until the spring of 2015 when I started going to skateparks 1-2 times per week, 45 to 90 minutes per session. Whenever possible, I tried to increase the sessions to 1-3 hours.Usually I went up early and visited the skatepark in the morning. I was usually alone there (nice when you're a beginner) or shared the park with a few other older guys. I can really recommend speaking with the other skaters in the park, you can learn a lot from each other! In the autumn of 2015 I finally "dropped in" for the first time. It was a really low quarter pipe. Before I made it, I had fallen quite badly a few times. No injuries, but it hurt a lot. This is how it looked. In the beginning I was only wearing a helmet and sometimes gloves, but after my failed attempts at dropping in I geared up with writst pads, knee pads and elbow pads.I'm a slow learner in general and build confidence (and skill) by focusing on the basics in the beginning. Standing on the board, pushing the board on flat ground (forward, big clockwise/anti clockwise circles, etc), trying some very low, very gentle slopes, etc.I like the skateparks because of the very smooth concrete surface, since getting stuck on a small piece of rock - usually leading to a complete stop (and fall) - is not very nice when you're a beginner.Skateparks usually also have areas with different difficulty levels, which makes it easy to use progressions as a way to learn.I still haven't learned any tricks like ollies, but enjoy riding in skateparks a lot anyway. Especially when I conquered my fear of riding in bowls - that's a really nice feeling once you get your speed up a little!Living in Sweden is not ideal for skateboarding, but you can still easily get 8 months per year outdoors. Currently it's winter here in Stockholm where I live so I'm really looking forward to spring so I can start skating again! :)EDIT: I haven’t been able to skate a lot during 2016, but here’s a clip from today (September 6, 2016) which shows my current level. I’ve mostly been skating in bowls this year and it’s a wonderful feeling to finally be able to do it!EDIT 2 (October 4, 2016): Dropping in has been my goal for a long time, but I’ve also been very scared of doing it. I did some attempts last summer (see above) and I sometimes made it, but it felt like luck and was very scary.Since the skateboarding season is nearing its end here in Sweden I thought that I would make a final push to learn it. Watched a lot of dropping in tutorials on YouTube this weekend and built up my confidence.Went to the skatepark yesterday, conquering the darkness and the cold weather. It felt like a bad day for skating, but I took it slow, cruising around in the park, doing some other stuff and then finally decided to go to a wooden mini ramp and just do it.And I made it! :)EDIT 2 (July 15, 2017): Me and my skater friend have decided to learn to do an Ollie this summer. After like 2–300 jumps the last two weeks, and countless of tutorials watched on YouTube I’m beginning to see some progress.By the end of the summer I’m hoping to be able to do this while moving and maybe jumping up to a 10 cm high curb or ledge.EDIT 3 (July 6, 2018): I haven’t been able to ride much this year, but I thought I would post my first “on board video”, filmed by holding my iPhone in my hand(!) while riding in Rålis skatepark i Stockholm:EDIT 4 (June 2019): After a month or two of focused training I finally learned how to do some decent frontside and backside kickturns! So happy :)EDIT 5 (August 11, 2019): This summer I decided to really try to learn how to do an ollie and I finally got my first decent one a few days ago! Check out the video below at the 1 minute 12 second mark. I finally started to make some real progress with the ollie after hiring an online coach for two video coaching sessions. But then a friend pointed out that I actually wasn’t jumping up from the board in any of my previous attempts. Once I understood that I really need to jump up to become airborne I saw a lot of improvements! Getting a nice clean high ollie is one of my major goals :)EDIT 5 (August 16, 2020): I have skated a lot in 2020 and started doing some harder things. And now - for the first time since I started skating in 2014 - I have gotten some “real” injuries. Both injuries happened during the last two week period. I wouldn’t say they are related to me being an old skater though. First I fell badly twice(!) when trying to learn how to jump / ride off a 2-stair staircase. I slammed into the ground and hurt my left / front shoulder badly. It hurt a lot during a week, but got a bit better after 10 days. Now, 14 days later it’s almost back to normal again. I did some rehab training during this period though. The video below doesn’t show when the accident happened, but I think I fell in a similar way when I did hurt myself. Fast forward to 0:48 if you want to see the fall. The other injury happened this morning. I fell in a very strange way, landed on all fours and somehow hit my front teeth in the concrete. One of the front teeth was snapped in two (the tip was snapped off). It didn’t hurt and and I didn’t bleed, but I went straight to the dentist and fixed it. She told me that there were no serious damages, but warned me that I could get further problems in one to three months. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. I have no video of this, but two still pictures. One taken right after the accident and one after the tooth was fixed by the dentist.EDIT 6: December 2020. This autumn I have tried to improve my kick turns in general and kick turns in the ramp in particular. After a lot of experimenting I finally realised how important it is to actually look at the coping - instead of looking into the wall - when you’re riding up the transition in the ramp. I also learned that it gets much easier to do a tighter kick turn (closer to 180 degrees if you turn your head before you do the turn. Here’s a recent session where I finally could start riding back and forth from one side to the other in the ramp. Great feeling!

What is the real China? Are there two versions: the real one and the one they are making the world think it is?

Living in China for more than two decades, I took many photos from which you can get an insight into China. The following photos ( 2013~2017) range from big cities to rural villages, from day to night, from factories to religious architectures, from daily life to special moments. China Smart Home Expo and IC Expo.On the sea.Compared with Guangzhou and Hongkong, Shenzhen is kind of a new-built city full of dazzling skyscrapers and green trees where most of the people are young and open minded from different parts of China and even the world struggling for their dreams so that you can blend into this city as a member of it immediately without facing much discrimination. Meanwhile, it gives me a feeling of ‘floating in the air’ as the city lacks a ‘root’ like duckweed. Tourists may barely find its unique historical architectures travelling through the most parts of the city so that what they remember is usually new skyscrapers and busy traffic.Building modern architectures does not ruin a culture, but the old classical ones should be protected. Building a skyscraper is easy, but creating a civilisation is not. Shenzhen can be such an excellent city not depending on its tall buildings but on the people, on the location. Now China is developing too rapidly, building this and that, here and there. Several years ago when I studied in university and went home once a month, I got lost at my hometown! On a new street only about 2~3 km away from my home. The bus had changed its route. The buildings looked both familiar and strange. I even asked the way! After I told that incident to my parents, they felt surprised, amused and a bit angry while my father said: ‘laugh die people (笑死人, extremely laughable)! Nobody will believe it if I tell them!’. Many eastern towns get addicted to new skyscrapers and wide roads but fail to preserve its unique place so different towns look similar (actually the central government has realised that problem and put forward some policies about 特色文化小镇). It does enhance the living standard of people but that may make the people from the certain place confuse who they themselves really are. Especially now the level of globalisation is so high and also it seems globalisation is a kind of westernisation (now I realise modernisation doesn't mean westernisation). I’m afraid I will feel very confused about my identity as I’ve not studied my culture deeply but got exposed to western culture too much. To balance that, I’ve been trying learning more about my own culture and other different cultures. It sounds a bit ridiculous but it’s true. BTW, till now, I’ve not been abroad. Hopefully I will go sightseeing abroad this year to feel more various cultures in person and also see how brainwashed I am LOL.Guangzhou. May 20, 2017. Later it turns out the boss is Georgian.‘Ciknstraqanov’…Thanks for reading the long answer! I have more photos of various topics actually but now feel too tired to upload. Maybe I will upload again, if you think I should.I've been uploading more photos I took with my phone in China. Both old and new. Thanks!

Can you share a one-sided love story?

At least I could share it here because I didn't tell her, to be precise she wasn't interested to listen. It all started in august 11 2014. Being introvert I'm kind of reserved type of person, shy and average looking guy. With a lots of dreams and goals to make my parents proud, I entered into the class, yeah I was newbie to the class with other two guys. I made my way to the last bench and sat. Half hour later a girl entered with her friends, white t-shirt n teddy bear bag and that ponytail(fell for that). I recognized her from the college website that she is topper of the class, I said to one of my newbie friend that bro she's the topper of this class, isn't she cute? After a weekI was trying to get the output right in lab but I couldn't, I knew she was doing right next to me with her friends. She saw I was struggling to get it done. I don't know what made me to look at her, she was looking at me my hearted to beat faster than the usual. From suddenly from nowhere, she made some signs like you need help?, I was like yeah. She came n did something then also I didn't get output and she said call the lab instructor to check. In this world nobody gives damn about you but she came voluntarily to help(fell again) such a sweet heart. My feelings kept growing day by day for her I knew I love her but I didn't had courage to propose her. After few monthsOn her birthday I took her number in whatsapp group and wrote quote by myself and sent her but lots of negative thoughts running through my mind, my heart rate increased. After a minute I got text from get Thnx!.And I was constantly checking her profile picture to be visible till midnight but I was not able to see( should have taken seriously but I didn't). I used to go to college to see her and never concentrated on lectures. this went on everyday like looking at her, blushing and imaging both of us having kids and day dreaming about her. Exams came I messaged her again to ask some portions to study, she was replying lately( should have taken this seriously) but I didn't care until n unless she texts me. Again I started checking her profile picture but I was not able to see. I reinstalled whatsapp if there could be a problem(yes I was fool), Again not able to see. Yeah this time I knew what's happening, I don't know how to describe that feeling there something happening in my heart and next moment my sight was blur. Tears rolling over my cheeks, I knew it's over. She started behaving differently in classes from then I never disturbed her again. But I never stopped caring for her, thinking about her, day dreaming both of us getting married. Days months passed.Next year year on her birthdayAgain wished her with little hope, again the same text thanks. Picture wasn't visible. After a week she installed instagram, I sent her request, it showed requested for next 3 months but her followers increased. It made me to confirm. She accepted my classmates requests. I came to the reasons that I'm average in everything be it on studies or looks and my english horrible(if you're reading this you know why). I respected her decision, she must be having dreams of her partner to look good, to be rich.I worked on myself from being average student to brilliant student. People started noticing me, worked even more and my name in the list of toppers. I went ahead her, not to take revenge but to show don't judge people. But I still love her no matter what, I still cry for her. She's always there in my prayers, I want her to be happy with lots of love. I'll be there for her always. But one thing I cannot love anyone like I loved her.Things I learntLove always wins-MythNo matter how much you love a person, you should be rich or handsome.Wish anything in the world expect loveMoney is everythingJust because she didn't me doesn't make her bad. It's all about priorities. We should respect their decisions too.And now I lost faith in love, thinking not to trust anyone again and marrying someone, working on myself, my career and MY PARENTS is everything for me now.I still love you forever.
