The worst that happens was when a paper was kept by the journal for 2 years and finally refused. But even then I cannot really say that they were guilty. It can be named “adjunct”, “contractor” or whatever, but whenever you find yourself in that position you should run. Nobody, exposed to abuse should be forced to endure it, nothing good is achieved from this.Common abuse that I have seen is people in tenure track denied tenure because they are not in the good grace of the chief of department. Or because they are women. Basically, once people have power, they can use it against you. Also, you cannot really win battle if it is not one group against another.Projects are the next level of the battlefield. It mostly involve only people who are employed so it is a fight between professionals. Again it is a fight for limited scarce resources. People who win can expand their research laboratory. People who lose have limited funding and wither. But sometimes the consequence can be worse, see Stefan Grimm.I have seen numerous case where friends of the applicant are present in the committee that decides. Other strategy is to be the one who writes the requirement of the project for which surprise! you are the only one that fits the requirements. Also I have seen chief of department systematically block application of researchers that he did not like.Unfortunately, the search for projects and the associated fights spread into the literature. How do you build your credibility? By having articles in journals that explains your methods and so necessarily trash the methods of other groups. That is unfortunate and it can become hard to distinguish the real stuff from the trash.Conclusion: All that being said there are plenty of good people in academia. But the reduction in funding put pressure on everyone and so the fight becomes fiercer than it would be in other eras. Anyway, academia has very rarely been a completely clean environment.Keep things in perspective, yes contacts and relations are important in academia but in some other fields it can be 100% of the work. Fights are an unfortunate part of academia but in other fields it can simply be much worse. Just be realistic.
