Namely, assault (among other things). Assault usually doesn’t require physical touching, but just putting someone in reasonable fear for their safety.Of course, double check all this with a lawyer in your jurisdiction. I don’t know what jurisdiction you’re in, so don’t take what I said as definitive.

Wrapping the box of cupcakes neatly in a plastic bag, I skipped lightly to the gymnasium where my volleyball practice was taking place.I felt a certain amount of sadness that my assistant coach was quitting his job and moving on to ‘bigger and better’ things, but I was mostly excited to celebrate his last day and dive into the cupcakes which I had brought for everybody!As I neared the gym, I hid my arms behind my back, hoping to pull out the plastic bag with the cupcakes inside as a ‘surprise’ when I came in.I had told the entire team already to pretend that they didn’t know he was leaving (though our parents’ had all gotten the e-mail) so we could all scream ‘we’ll miss you!’ together. So as I walked into the gym, flinging the doors open with enthusiasm, I saw the girls on my team smiling anxiously and giggling.Sitting down next to them and explaining the plan, we then waited nervously for the assistant coach to show up.Within about a minute, we saw him nearing the gym and all standing up, we screamed “we’ll miss you!” as he opened the double doors. Grinning from ear to ear, I whipped out the cupcakes from the plastic bag in an effort to show everybody the treats.But just as I had taken them out, I began to sense something was terribly wrong.My assistant coach was staring at all of us, the double doors still wide open, and he now had a look of absolute shock and confusion on his face as he asked “where am I going?”My expression now equally confused, I replied “it’s your last day! We wanted to plan something nice.” And even though I was smiling, I began to feel an overwhelming dread.“It’s my last day?” he asked, his voice suddenly dropping.As it turns out, he was getting fired, and he did not know until we told him.Apparently, those emails were not meant to be shared with the kids, but my parents had not read the fine print.So unfortunately, I wish that, as the organizer of this “goodbye” event, I had known that he was unaware of his own departure before I had organized for everybody to yell out “we’ll miss you!”

I told him what had happened the day before, then before I knew it I was being strapped onto a gurney and rushed to the nearest hospital. I hardly had time to breathe before I was on the operating table. When I came round I learned that I had had an ectopic pregnancy.(For those who don’t know what this means - it is a fetus stuck in one of the Fallopian tubes on its descent to the uterus. If the tube should burst the peritoneum immediately fills with blood, and it is often fatal for the mother).Fortunately, I was alive to tell the tale.This naive hospital put me in a ward full of mothers who had just had babies and I had to listen to their babies crying for food, and watch the joy on these mothers’ faces. I hid under the covers and just wanted to die.Nobody mentioned it. Nobody came to me and sympathized. Nobody sent cards or flowers. Nobody even acknowledged that I had lost a baby. It was just an operation. With a scar. And I bear that scar today.That was a very long time ago now, but I never did have another child. I don’t know what sex my baby might have been. I have no photos of my child. All I know is that I was pregnant once, but my baby died.
