I lived in Germany as a soldier with the USAF. I was stationed there 4 years. During that time I met my wife who worked on the base for the commander. She was a bit arrogant but still I wanted to impress her. I took a German course for 10 weeks. I learned how to hold a conversation. I had a friend that was German to tutor me to speak correctly. So 3 months went by and I just happened to see this stunning woman. I went up to her and started to talk to her in German. She did remember me. She seemed flabbergasted to say the least. She was on her way for coffee and invited me to join her. I'm glad I did. We had a wonderful conversation. She was impressed that I had learned the language correctly. She said many Americans don't care for the language or even to mingle with Germans. She seemed happy with the brief meeting. We made plans to go in the city during the weekend. I think if you're in another country you should attempt to speak the language. If you live there you should try to get to know your neighbors. If you seem to want to integrate into their culture you'll be amazed how the Germans will help you. Once you've built a friendship you'll be in good graces and find out their friendship is genuine. I ended up marrying this wonderful woman. Got out of the military and started to take classes to integrate in their system. Of course it was a bit difficult to learn to enjoy their culture. I can speak fluent German and had my own pottery shop. I couldn't get this in my name but my wife was intrigued with the idea. So the once butcher shop that was part of her home was now my shop and studio. Healthcare is universal. You received excellent care without going bankrupt like in the states. Even received 4 weeks vacation. That 4 weeks turned into 7 after a few years working on the economy. I was in Germany for 30 years. I loved being there. The European foods were usually homemade and served by friendly servers. I don't do American chain restaurants when I paid about the same for real wholesome meals.
