How would you fix the US economy?
There's several things that we can do.One, make it drastically easier for workers to unionize. Unions have been one of the most important factors in creating a solid middle class. That all changed in the 80s, when unionization plummeted. The result was that middle class wages have stagnated, while costs of living have increased. We should repeal “right to work” laws and ensure that no worker is ever prohibited or discouraged from joining a union. Two, cut taxes for the middle class. The average worker pays around 35% of their income in taxes every year. That's unacceptable. We should heavily cut taxes on middle class families so that they can use that money to make purchases, invest, or safe for the future, all of which would improve the economy. To pay for the cuts, we could make cuts in public spending, specifically the defense budget and corporate subsidies. If all else fails, we could raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans, which would have a very minor impact on economic growth. On top of it all, simplify the tax code to make paying taxes easier, less stressful, less expensive, and less bereaucratic.Three, make healthcare less expensive. The best case scenario would be a single payer system where people would pay little, if anything, for their healthcare. However, more realistically, we could reform the ACA. Increase the individual mandate to ensure they people who can afford to purchase insurance but choose not to to purchase a plan. We can increase subsidies for those who are having a difficult time paying their premiums and deductibles. Better yet, we can offer all of our citizens a basic package, where the government would completely pay for the premiums of the cheapest plan, ensuring that all Americans have at least a basic amount of coverage. We could allow Medicare to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to lower the price of prescription drugs, just like almost every other modern country does. We could make immunizations free and mandatory for all children, in order to prevent the spread of deadly diseases.Four, we could improve the education system. End programs like Common Core and No Child Left Behind, and make it easier for schools to innovate and try new things. Focus less on standardized testing and more on teaching to each student’s potential and promoting a love of knowledge. Significantly increase funding for under-funded public schools and make public colleges debt-free for students who excelled in high school.Five, we should invest heavily in our crumbling infrastructure, such as public roads, transportation, buildings, bridges, etc. This would not only directly create thousands of jobs, but would make our economy more efficient for the private sector.Six, we should ensure that all companies provide paid paternity, sick, and vacation leave to their employees. Countless amounts of studies have shown that parents who take a few months off after having a child come back to work more productive. Those who take time off when they're sick not only come back to work healthier, but also migate the risk of spreading their sickness to others. Those who take vacations are also more productive and less stressed.Seven, we should reform the welfare system from one that encourages dependency to one that encourages work. Our current welfare system discourages work by cutting people's benefits when they find employment. There are even cases of people making more off of welfare than they do working a full time job. We should eliminate most of our current welfare programs and replace them with a negative income tax (NIT), which is similar to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Basically, a NIT would ensure that all Americans have a basic income to fall back on if they lose a job. For instance, we could ensure that every adult in the household gets 12k, and every child gets 4k, which is roughly equal to the poverty line. This means that everyone in the country, no matter their circumstances, would be able to afford a basic amount of food, clothing, transportation, shelter, etc. Also, instead of immediately cutting one's benefits when they find employment, the benefits would gradually phase out the more one earns. So the problem of people making more off of welfare than they do work would cease to exist.Eight, we need to make the minimum wage a living wage, and index it towards inflation. Realistically, the minimum wage needs to be around $12 an hour for a person to afford all their basic needs without requiring government assistance. We should gradually begin to raise the minimum wage to that amount over the course of a few years, and then index it to inflation, to ensure that it will always be a living wage, and no one who works full time would qualify for welfare.Nine, we need to enforce laws regarding pay disparity between men and women. While I agree that if a man works longer hours or has a better education he should be payed more, if a woman has the same experience, education, and work requirements as a man, she should be payed the same. Sadly, this isn't always the case. If pay disparity between men and women decreases, that would mean that women would have a larger disposable income to reinvest into the economy.Ten, we need to end the War on Drugs and reform our prison system. The War on Drugs was started solely for it to be easier to imprison blacks and leftists who spoke out against the War in Vietnam. Somehow, it's still going on today. I say somehow, because it has had absolutely no effect on limiting drug usage and ending violent crime. In fact, it has done the exact opposite of these two things. If we legalised drugs, billions of dollars would be added to our economy, not to mention the money saved from prosecuting these people and the tax revenues collected from the sales of drugs. While we're at it, we should also legalise prostitution. We should make it much easier for criminals to reintegrate into society, and focus on rehabilitation instead of punishment, like almost every other major country does.Eleven, we need more free trade deals. Free trade is very beneficial to the economy because it lowers the prices of consumer goods, gives us greater leverage to export our goods, allows our economy to be more efficient, and helps foster peace between nations in the agreement. However, any free trade deal must have strict protections for labor and the environment, which deals like NAFTA failed to include.Twelve, reform our immigration system. Illegal immigration can be both beneficial and destructive to an economy. It can be beneficial because undocumented immigrants usually work jobs that ordinary Americans fail to do, such as farming and cleaning services. However, in some cases, undocumented immigrants also take up jobs that Americans are willing to do, and, in the process, they undercut unions and can depress wages. Our policy should be, number one, to make it easier to legally immigrate in the first place. Second of all, if an undocumented immigrant works a job that Americans do not wish to work, they should be allowed to continue their work. However, immigrants that do work jobs that Americans are willing to work should be prohibited from doing so, and companies should be fined for hiring them.Thirteen, pursue a smart monetary policy. Over the years, the Federal Reserve has either clamped down too harshly on the monetary supply, causing recessions, or being too lax, causing bubbles. We should appoint a smart, flexible chairman of the Federal Reserve who understands that we need to foster an environment of economic growth, but without causing excess amounts of speculation.Fourteen, we should increase regulations in the financial sector to make it more difficult for bubbles to form in the first place. Stricter lending standards should be required for banks to ensure that the people they are loaning to can afford to repay their loan. Also, while we're at it, reinstate Glass-Steagall.Fifteen, balance the budget, and begin to repay the national debt. Our national debt is currently at danger levels, and, if we’re not careful, we might be forced to default in the near future, which would cause an economic catastrophe. We should begin to gradually pay off the debt. We should also mandate that in times of economic prosperity and peace, the government should be mandated to have a balanced budget, to ensure that future generations do not have to pay for the excess of today.Sixteen, heavily invest in green energy. Renewable energy is the future. There's no denying that. Our planet is in serious trouble, and that might be the only possible way to delay the inevitable. We should heavily invest in areas such as solar, wind, and nuclear, and to pass more regulations ensuring that those who excessively use non-renewable resources will be fined.Seventeen, heavily increase funding for family planning, contraception, and sex education. One of the biggest ways a person can fall into poverty is having a child out of wedlock. In order to prevent this, we should expand family planning programs, make contraception more easily accessible and cheaper, and should stop teaching abstinence-only sex education and teach people how to practice safe sex.Eighteen, increase economic literacy among the population. Many people living in the country barely know how to balance a checkbook and budget, let alone play the stock market. Public schools should be mandated to teach all students how to economically prepare for the future. They should teach students how to invest, save, and, yes, balance a checkbook.Nineteen, shorten the workweek. Decades ago, prominent economists believed that the people of today would be working around ten twenty hours a week. Instead, we're working forty, some even longer than that. If we gradually shortened the workweek to around thirty hours a week, workers would have more time to relax, spend time with their families, and, of course, buy things.Twenty, make childcare free. Lots of people who want to work can't because they have children at home. If daycare centers were like public schools and were free of charge to the parent, more people who have kids would be able to find work. Not to mention daycare would help prepare millions of children for school, giving them a head start. There's probably many more things we can do, but that's all I've got at the moment. Hope this helps.
Does India need more convicted crooks or more chowkidars?
There are so many policy decisions which increased revenue for govt and improved lives of people and eased the process of administration like hydro exploration policy, mental health care act and countless no of schemes like smart cities, digit India, skill India, sagramala, bharatmala, make in india etc but I did not wrote about all of them , as it will need a book ,I wrote only about changes that directly helped people still missed so many.take your time and read them patiently.WHAT HAPPENED IN LAST 5 YEARS BECAUSE OF CHOWKIDAR PM• everyone used to see middle class income groups as vote banks no one never thought about them, first time bjp government thought about them ,firstly it reduced the taxation slab between 2.5 lakh - 5 lakh from 10% to 5% and now in 2019 budget completely rebated the tax to them in this slab, even if we see ,it increased standard deduction on taxable income from 40,000 to 50,000 and it even increased tax allowance on house loans, education loans , and other things also if we include all the other allowance one individual is able to save huge amount of money.• Aam aadmi bima yojana where govt itself pays complete premium and if person belonging to Bpl and marginal income family dies government gives 50-75k for children education based on natural/ accidental ,no one ever thought of it, if family head dies children is used to suffer financially for education. free accidental insurance to jhan dhan accounts of 1 lakh rupees was also started by modi government so that poor if anyone dies it helps family for their survival., apart from it we have pm jeevan jyoti bhima yojana. ,pm suraksha bhim yojana for above BPL and BPL where premium is very less like 12 for PMSBY and 2 lakhs accident insurance for 1 YEAR IS provided which includes death and PMJJB where 2 lakhs death insurance for 1 year which includes all kinds of death. if u include all these death insurances one family may get around 4-5 lakhs based on death this may seem
