Avoid asking your landlord for a reference letter.If your landlord is just gong to give you a bad reference letter, what’s the point in asking them for the bad reference letter?If you can maybe patch things up with them, you could also try that, but you’d have to be a good tenant for a while for me to give you a positive letter, and I’m likely not going to write you one at all, rather than writing a bad one.It’d just be more effort for me, and no benefit to either of us.

Landlords Are Slow. To help landlords write reference letters, “suggest” letters by writing them yourself, in business-letter format. They don't need a logo to look businesslike. To retain the figleaf that an ex-landlord wrote the letter of his/her free will, do it in Word, then submit it to your prospective landlord in PDF. The landlord-reference letter should contain the following information:Dates of tenancyNature of tenancy (lease, TAW)RentAffirmation that you were a satisfactory/excellent tenant (no damage, clean, paid on time and in full)The letter should be made out to To Whom It May Concern, dated, and signed by the former landlord, and contain his/her contact info. Landlords not hip to the intricacies of using Email or inserting their signatures as GIFs can be encouraged by old-fashioned snail mai, where you send them the letter on paper and ask them to sign it. Provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope to get the signed letter back to you. (If you make a copy, you can use it again.) Feel free to prod them — no more than once a day! — by phone till you get your reference letter. Such a properly put-together reference letter should satisfy a prospective landlord.Good luck!
