PDF Editor FAQ

Do you think classroom technology could be holding back students?

It does. Our students get access to computers on a 1:1 basis. However, not all students are able to bring them home due to misuse, potential misuse, or parents that dont sign the permission forms, or students who don’t have WiFi at home.Add to this students who don’t routinely charge their laptops and I usually have only about 60% of my students who are able to use their computers at school and less who can use them at home. It’s often easier, and more accessible to all students to just give them a book and paper assignments.

What are the best reasons to attend the University of New Orleans?

A very short answer: UNO is a great value at a low priceI talked to students in my class (CHEM 3411 – Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry) and it was the most popular answer. Small class sizes was the second most popular answer.A more detailed answer.I divided a detailed answer into the parts about the city, the University in general, the College of Sciences, the Department of Chemistry and the Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMRI). For the impatient potential chemistry majors, scroll down to the Chemistry/AMRI part.New OrleansNew Orleans can be as loud and energizing or as quiet and relaxing as you would like it to be on a particular day. People are friendly and relaxed here. Starting a conversation with a stranger is normal. Cost of living is reasonable and traffic is not an issue (especially in comparison with any major U.S. city). Food is very good. Seafood is fairly priced at popular places. There are many places with French cuisines.2017 Krewe of Bacchus Parade, New Orleans. Copyright: me, i.e. Viktor Poltavets.2017 Krewe of Bacchus Parade, New Orleans. Copyright: me.Climate is subtropical, i.e. 8-month of summer and 4 month of sauna (mid-May until mid-September). Temperatures are below 92 F during the sauna season, but humidity is easily noticeable (above 90%). Fortunately, if there is a light breeze and you are in a shadow (preferable with a cold drink), the sauna feels kind of pleasant and relaxing. Some NOLA events: Carnival season from January 6 until Mardi Gras on the Fat Tuesday with more than 60 parades overall, French Quarter Festival, Jazz & Heritage Festival, Crawfish Mambo, Wine & Food Experience, Essence Music Festival, Tales of the Cocktail, Film Festival, Voodoo Experience, etc.Sport. NOLA is a home to New Orleans Saints (NFL), New Orleans Pelicans (NBA) and New Orleans Baby Cakes (PCL). Major sport events (Super Bowls, Final Fours) are often hosted here as well.Personal safety. As a tourist, follow the usual common sense measures as in any other big city. If you are a student at UNO, the campus is safe and adjacent areas (at least during a daytime when I walked there) are fine as well. The University Police patrol the campus 24/7; I have not heard about any safety issues or breaks into cars. Since I started at UNO, the only safety related email was about a stolen laptop; a picture of a thief from a security camera was included in the email.Safety from natural disasters. Ironically, since the disaster has already happened here, New Orleans is better prepared to storm surges and heavy rains than many other cities in the U.S. Think about Louisiana floods in August 2016. I received many concerned emails from friends at that time, but there was no flood in NOLA, thanks to the new pumping stations and floodgates. The new pumping station and floodgates at the 17th Street Canal. Copyright: me.Transportation.Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) serves 51 nonstop destinations in the U.S., and 7 international ones: Toronto (Canada), London (the yet United Kingdom), Frankfurt (Germany), Cancun (Mexico), Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), San Pedro Sula (Honduras) and Panama City (Panama). An additional, the North, terminal is under construction at MSY (opening 2018). With a project budget of $950 million, I expect something truly amazing.Amtrak trains can take you to Chicago for ~$100 if you are willing to sit for ~20 hours (a good opportunity to catch up on shows missed during the semester).Streetcars are primarily a tourist attraction (IMHO). I saw that the locals use them as well, but with just 5 lines and low speed, streetcars are not as functional as German S-Bahn and U-Bahn.University of New OrleansTuition. The in-state tuition is ~$7,500 per year and, as far as I know, there are no plans of increasing it. The out of state tuition was just decreased to ~$13,500, which made it lower that in-state tuition in some Midwest and New England states. If you did not get into the University of Michigan, Cornell, Harvard, etc., and are tired of snow, UNO is a great option. Definitely a great option for chemistry majors. The last winter was the first one in my life without snow and I really enjoyed it.UNO was included in the U.S. News & World Report's 'Least Debt' list for 6 years in a row.Undergrad research. The University supports the undergrad research through the P.U.R.S.U.E. program (Privateer Undergraduate Research and Scholarly UNO Experience). The awards are $1,000 or $1,500 paid in the form of student worker positions.Additional opportunities for a paid undergrad research experience exist in the College of Sciences (see below).Campus. I assume that the question was asked by a high schooler, so I am not going to mention that the Sandbar sells alcohol. I have not bought any alcohol there yet, but traditional wings and sweet potato fries are great.Traditional wings and sweet potato fries at the Sandbar. Copyright: me.Jazz at the Sandbar, Fall 2016. I will add a photo after attending the cook-off in May.Krewe of UNO parade was entertaining with a free King cake for everyone at the end. Men’s basketball team just won (3/11/17) the Southland Conference tournament and secured participation in the NCAA tournament, a.k.a. the March Madness.Parking. There is plenty of parking. The parking fee is $100 per year.Transportation. Bus lines 55 (to the French Quarter by Elysian Fields Ave), 51 (to the French Quarter), 52 (guess where: to the French Quarter), and 60 (to the City Park) stop at the University Center on the campus.Administration. As an undergrad, I did not care about my alma mater administration. As a faculty, I can see how administration decisions influence students’ life. Fortunately, the vision of the new president, Dr. John W. Nicklow, is an inspiring one (Dr. Nicklow, not trying to freak you out, but we are watching you). The President started with the campus beatification and an overall student experience improvement. His top priorities are (1) increasing the student enrolment to 15,000, (2) expanding the university research portfolio and (3) growing partnerships with businesses and alumni. Essentially all upper administration (the provost and vice presidents) was changed during the last year to form a cohesive team. With positive changes at the University, faculty and students morale greatly improved in the last year. The number of students wearing apparel with the UNO logo visually increased in the last half year. Besides the formal meetings, there are frequent social events, where faculty can discuss ideas with the President, Provost, and the Vice Presidents. The VP for Research and Economic Development, my Chemistry colleague Dr. Tarr, would like to increase the University research activity and number of graduate students, which I strongly support. The University is hiring new faculty; I have heard about 6 active faculty searches across campus.Enrollment. The enrollment dropped after the hurricane Katrina from 17,142 to 6,684 students in 2005. During the recent years, the number of students seems to stabilize at ~8,000 (~6,500 undergrads and ~1,500 grads). From what I have heard, changes in the ACT requirement in Louisiana drastically decreased the number of NOLA residents eligible for TOPS scholarships (state scholarships for Louisiana residents). The positive aspect, the students became stronger and classes smaller. Due to the smaller classes, the University does feel sometimes as a private liberal art college.College of SciencesThe College of Sciences just hired 4 additional academic advisors, so it will be easier to get help for undergrads. While it has not been finalized yet, the College of Sciences budget is apparently about to increase substantially, i.e. better teaching labs, better research equipment, new faculty hires. The College of Sciences Undergraduate Research Program (COSURP) engages students into research. Students can work 10 hours per week, earning $10 per hour.Department of Chemistry and Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMRI)Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. The Department offers B.S. with an option of B.S. with one of five concentrations: Materials, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Physics, and Forensics. Medicinal Chemistry concentration is an interesting pathway for pre-med students. See below about an accelerated M.S. program. As mentioned above, the classes are small. The largest lecture is in General Chemistry with ~100 students (for comparison, I taught a general chemistry lecture with 400 students at a different university). The lecture material is discussed in smaller recitation sections. Higher-level classes usually have ~20 students or less.Undergrad research and/or internship in a company is required by some courses.Master of Science in Chemistry. The Department offers non-thesis (coursework) Chemistry M.S. This degree is popular with industrial professionals. Accelerated M.S. will be offered starting the Fall 2017 semester. The program will allow undergrad students to complete a major portion of a Master’s in Chemistry while pursuing their bachelor’s degree. The program allows students to complete both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees within 5 years.Ph.D. Program/Research. The Department is very research active with ~25 graduate students in the Chemistry Ph.D. program. Several faculty, including me, are members of the Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMRI), which is located in the Science Building (adjacent to the Chemistry-Sciences Building). AMRI has very extensive capabilities for the materials synthesis and characterization. The Department and AMRI are growing: I was hired last year and there is an active search of a new analytical chemistry faculty.Graduate students at the Halloween BBQ 2016 at the Department of Chemistry (with the students’ permission). Copyright: me.Social events. There is a sense of community in the Department. Many chemistry undergrads commented that they have established friendly/informal relationships with grads and faculty at the frequent departmental events. The departmental social events are primarily organized by the graduate students. There is a departmental barbecue at least twice a year. Everybody (undergrads, grads and professors) participate in the events, which are very informal and fun. I have posted photos of grad students (with their permissions) from the last Halloween BBQ. The student wearing the Incredible Hulk makeup is a theorist. Put any jokes about theorists and Hulk connections in the comments and I will make sure that the student will see those.Overall, the University has a lot to offer. It is possible to adjust your personal experience through participation (or not participation) in social activities, sport and undergrad research. UNO alumni have the highest average early-career salaries among graduates of all Louisiana universities. If someone has more questions about the Department of Chemistry or AMRI, feel free to stop by at my office in the Chemistry-Sciences Building, room 238.Edit 1: I was told that locals do use the street cars.Edit 2: photos from the Annual Crawfish Mambo on UNO campus.
