It is currently illegal to buy ammo for a gun that the state does not show is registered. Or to buy it without a license to buy ammo. Or a background check. Or to buy from someone without an ammo dealer’s state license, or FFL. Or to import it from any other state. Magazine size is also limited — although that is currently being overturned in Federal court.A) The right to keep and bear arms covers ammunition also. While “ammo” is regulated in California, ammo components are not.C) The Federal government has and is already “going after ammo”. The Federal government purchases a *LOT* of ammo, given the military, and myriad Federal law enforcement officers. They stock up in *BIG* quantities, regularly.Oh, and the government has the power to insist that its orders are filled first, because of public safety.The Federal government has, from time to time, used this purchasing power to buy up all the popular sized ammo and make it impossible for regular gun owners to find their caliber in stock.D) There are states with high taxes and other restrictions on cigarettes. In those states, there is also a black market for cigarettes without a tax stamp. Do you seriously think that gun owners won’t figure out an answer to ammo control or an intentional ammo shortage?

I am going to say that it depends on what you are buying. If it is a $1000 television, then you might have to pay a use tax. But here in Alabama, if you get caught with cigarettes that don’t have an Alabama tax stamp on the pack, you are going to get a stiff fine! As an individual, you are unlikely to ever run into any issues, but if you are selling cigarettes, you could lose your entire stock if they don’t have the tax stamps attached. It’s odd though, because so many people come here to buy cigarettes at our really really low tax rate to bootleg in other states. Most stores have a 3 or 5 carton limit, and if you buy the max amount often, they won’t sell to you anymore. (Mainly big chains that operate in neighboring states that realize that selling 50 cartons in Alabama is just costing them the sale of 50 cartons in Georgia.). Mom and pop stores will generally sell you whatever you want, but their prices make bootlegging cigarettes from them unprofitable.It’s the same with alcohol. Our state has a list of what’s allowed in Alabama. Again, if you bring in a 1000 dollar bottle of wine, no one is going to care. Get caught with 3 cases of wine that is not on the state list and your doing jail time (there is actually a procedure where you can go to a state owned liquor store and order any alcohol you want, by the case only, and have it shipped to the state store, where they will affix tax stamps to it and release it to you. So that $1000 bottle of wine would be times 12 or 15 or whatever a case is with about a 25% markup for alcohol and sales tax)
