She was having some bruises all over her body. But her husband brings lots of gifts, loves her a lot. So we did not find anything suspicious in him initially but we doubted something fishy. No happiness of newly wedded girl in her face.It's their personal matter. Unless the girl asks us any help how could we interfere? I am Bangalore based ‘civilised woman' at that time. So I said to my mil.(Now I hate that term. I am just normal woman now.)My mil shouted at me ,warned me and advised me to keep my ‘good manners' with me. Told me to stop hiding my timidity and irresponsibility under ‘civilised behaviour title'!!Within no time somehow my mil could find out her husband is a sadist. He hurts her, whips her severely at not so visible places on her body. Finds satisfaction. Says it seems ‘I get pleasure like this only'!!!Then again he feels bad . Attends her with creams and ointments. She doesn't have parents. Her brother and uncle did her marriage. She is a secondary school trained teacher but was not working anywhere.Her husband looks like a perfect gentle man. No one would believe he got such a perversion. They were in love for one and half year before marriage.My mil could no more tolerate that girl’s torture. That girl was so scared to give police complaint.Once she is decided about any thing my lion mil never go back without logical conclusion.Called that girl. Told her this is not his weakness as she is thinking. It's his mental illness. It's really unfortunate she couldn't recognise the symptoms in her courtship period. It's rare he would get cured. He needs treatment. There is no guarantee he won't become violant again even after treatment. She has to live her entire life with fear. So it's better she should live with her own strength. Better to separate from him.In one word my mil ‘drywashed and dry cleaned' that girl's brains. Just didn't slap her that's it. Scolded entire education system. Almost did ‘death ceremony to the education minister and authors of that syllabus.She said ‘education which can't give confidence and guts to a person to fight back injustice or physical attack is as good as water in drainage.’That girl somehow realised her situation. My mil scolded her ‘what you sre going to teach kids in school tomorrow? Would you make meek, spineless kids for future india?That girl sobbed and gathered courage. Left it on my mil. She herself is in clueless , confused, shocked situation. Her brain stopped functioning long back for the sudden turn of events.My mil declared. For the time being till he agrees for treatment he should be kept away from torturing her . He should be scared like hell to touch her again. That is the important task now.Till her people come for her resque she should be protected. Her brother is working some where. Her uncle should be informed about this fellow first. It would take one or two days time. No cell phones era. Only landlines were there. No one would believe he is such a pervert by seeing him! Such a good looking gentle man!( Pervert)So my mil planned perfectly to save that girl till her people reach.My mil's earlier tenant’s daughter ‘Susi’ (not real name) joined police department. My mil contacted her. She came immediately.Evening instead of his wife, Susi received him in civil dress. Introduced herself as his wife's cousin. Gave him coffee. That fellow's eyes were searching for his wife. Slowly he is getting anger, frustration and irritation he is missing his prey!Then Susi suddenly showed him ‘heaven, hell ,stars, galaxies everything. Police charging!! Marks won't be there. Only pain would be there.My lion took her wooden massager. Beat him like anything.He shouted, resisted, pounced back on these ladies. Used all abusive language. Called his wife. So much scene he created. His wife came slowly infront of him. She was watching all his antics. Infact my mil insisted she too should give one or two beatings to her husband but she was terribly scared.Suddenly he changed his voice seeing her , started shedding tears. Presented himself like a helpless victim.My lion mil threatened him. If he comes back in to the girl's life again she wouldn't mind pouring kerosene on him and lighting. If it's not possible bathroom cleaning acid she would pour in to his throat!! It's minimum guaranteed!!With great difficulty Susi controlled my mil. They both together threw that fellow out.Next day that fellow's mother came crying. She doesn't know this face of her son. She accused her daughter in law. Yelled loud. One and half years they know each other. They were in love. Couldn't her dil find out his nature before marriage? Some tamasha she created.We didn't know whether to believe her or not.Susi said. ‘Many people who suffer these kinds of mental illness won't show symptoms easily to everyone.’ victim only should come out and testify. she contacted concerned doctor and told him about this fellow. But this fellow ran away. Some case was filed with the help of Susi.My mil promised his wife, till she gets a job she wouldn't ask her rent.Some temporary teacher job in a private school she got after one and half months. Her brother and uncle also supported her.Rest is history.To do righteous things you need not be a ‘Mahaan' person or a rich person.A normal pre independence born lady have conviction and guts and said ‘a wrong is wrong' and it must be corrected. People like her definitely can make a difference in society.They don't wait for invitation to interfere in others life if they are suffering. They don't depend on God. They don't give lectures about topics of ‘civilised manners'.‘Problem needs solution, disease needs treatment'. That's it. Simple funda of life. Age don't make them old.They are born young.So many youngesters in present generation are' born old' according to her. She chides and scolds cribbing younger generation. She says present day youngesters weep and cry alot. Always complaining!We are so called young , civilised , sloganeering blah blah people. I don't know whether we can make any difference! Forget about other’s life. Can we improve our's without cribbing is a big question mark.

Whether this is due to merit or hiring bias is a fine question, but either way the bias exists.None of the observations above means that an Ivy League school is necessarily better for you, or for anyone, than a less prestigious institute. When I wrote “different” I meant it very deliberately: different doesn't always mean better one way or another. But I don't think it makes sense to assume that where you spend those formative 3–4 years of your life won't matter for the rest of it. It certainly does, in a number of ways, some easier to predict, some impossible to.
