PDF Editor FAQ

I went to jail for a misdemeanor. I'm looking for a job. How do I address that if my potential employer does a background check? It was a first offense and I've never been in trouble before.

As long as you explain yourself surrounding the circumstances, it may play in your favor. If the employer is going to toss your application in the trash anyway, you might as well be honest about your past.If for some reason you are hired without including your felony record, the employer is sure to fire you if and when they find out. And this could start a domino effect as your next potential employer may call your previous one whom fired you for lying about your record. This process makes it exceedingly difficult to find employment of any kind.Read more on the Simply Hired Blog: The Importance of Honesty in Employment Background Checks - Simply Hired Blog

What are some uncommon ways to work smarter instead of harder?

Too many ideas exist, and I will try to present some of them with some schematics or pictures, analogies and inspirations and also tell you about some practical applications. More than that, I will also focus on why these ideas are often ignored, and how to actually use them to their full potential. All these flow in sequences such as ~Idea-analogyPractical applicationWhy is it not obviousHow to think about itIdea: Work on systems where there is chain reaction as shown in this picture below. Think of knocking out a project as taking a domino down. Lets say there are interlinked systems where one triggers the next, and so on.What would hard work look like? It would look like taking down the largest domino manually. Then taking the next one down manually, then the next one and so on until all dominoes have been taken down. What would smart work look like? It would look like knocking down the smallest domino, that takes down the one larger than that, until all the dominoes are down.Practical application:If you get the idea from the above domino example, what is that one system where it can work as chain reaction?“Training”: You train three persons who train three more persons, who in turn train three more and so on. This grows as ~ 1→ 3 → 9 → 27 → 81, and so on. Let us just imagine that everyone in your team does exactly same task, and it takes 30 minutes to do that task and you have to do 20 such tasks in the whole day. Let us now imagine that you came up with a method, which takes 20 minutes to do the same task. So you would be able to do three of those in an hour, whereas your whole team does only 2. For simplicity let us just assume there are 120 people in your team. Now the best thing you can do is to train your entire team with the new method in a time period as short as possible and you can do it in a chain reaction by training them. Your entire teams effectiveness will increase by 33%.Why is it not obvious: A question to ask is, it this is so easy to understand, why does it not work all the time?A lot of people choose not to do this. They think that they would look 33% better than everyone else for a tangible amount of time until someone else will learn or come up with the same method. They focus on themselves. And that is equivalent to taking down only the smallest domino in the above picture in isolation. Sure that is good, but the impact is much less.A lot of people do not like to share their knowledge with a hundred people because they think that their knowledge will not remain their own, and that their winning edge will be lost. How to actually think about it?Get knowledge K0.Give knowledge K0 to 100 people. This knowledge is K1.K1 is far bigger than K0.Idea: Work on bottleneck problems, and come up with long term solutions to those problems.A bottleneck is simply a constriction in the system that reduces the flow of material, or information through the channel. No matter what you do in other parts of the entire system, the total output or the whole system will come down to the best possible output at the bottleneck capacity. What would hard work look like? It would look like someone working on upstream or downstream of the bottleneck. What would smart work look like? It would look like someone working on eliminating the bottleneck in the short term, then eliminating it in the long run.Practical application: Most of the factories in the world keep going through one or the other bottlenecks. Smart people only position themselves on solving the bottleneck problems, and they usually try to come up with long term solutions to those problems, and then they move on to the next bottlenecks in the system. Why is it not obvious?: It is usually not obvious because it needs experience to solve bottleneck problems. Also, sometimes people are only focused on their core task, and do not look around. For example they do not interact with their upstream and downstream teams enough. How to actually think about it? No matter where the bottleneck exists, in your own team, or upstream or downstream teams, you should try to extend a hand on eliminating it. At the end of the day you are helping your organization. Those people who constantly work on eliminating bottleneck problems all their lives actually become senior people such as vice presidents or presidents in organizations, and eventually become the CEOs.Idea: Organize, collect, and branch out.Practical application: Ok, these pictures in the below will speak a thousand words. The more organized everything is, the better off you would be in long term when problems occur over time. It would be much easier to solve them if everything is organized. Why is it not obvious? People sign up to do sloppy work in the beginning because when they actually position themselves to solve the bottleneck problems, they do not extend the boundaries beyond that. They get quick solutions, which work, but they don’t clean up the stuff and do not take extra efforts in organizing everything well. Then soon enough the networks get very complex, the integration is much harder, and the complexity grows. One day they leave the job, and someone replaces them. The new person is thoroughly confused, and cannot do anything well, because they are setup for failure. How to actually think about it?Take good efforts in organizing everything as well as possible. Note down details, document, and mark the material with all possible documentation. Just like one of the pictures in the above shows a well organized wire-network, one can organize their entire lives like that, and choose to do a god job on everything. Efforts put this way add up over long term, and bring much larger rewards.Idea: Parallel process. A lot of people get this wrong. By parallel processing I do not mean to say that put your brain or your body to work on two things and do a sloppy job on both. Here is how I like to think about it. If you write down all your tasks, and then cut them into series, you would identify that some of those series combinations are better than other series combinations. By choosing a better series combination, you can put a few things to work in parallel. For example, it is better to put the machines to work while you are working on something else.If I have three tasks to do - workout, running a computer program, and laundry, I would put laundry to work, then run the computer program and then workout. By the time I am back, a lot of things would already be done. If I choose a series like ~ workout, running a computer program, and then laundry, then it would take me longer to finish everything.Practical application: Write computer programs that do your work hands free. Then launch those programs when you are working on something else. Perhaps if you have to do laundry, then put the laundry machines to work, before you go out to workout. That way when you are back, laundry is done. Listen to podcasts when you are driving. You cannot watch anything, but you can listen. Listen to music when you are running. Try to make as many things hands free as possible. Why is it not obvious? It is not obvious, because people do not free up their hands. Hands have limitations. You cannot work on two things this way. There is no parallel processing at play if you try to do two things simultaneously with hands. How to actually think about it?If you put your brain to work and write some really good computer programs, you can go hands free, and now you can be orders of magnitude faster. If you listen to good podcasts while you drive, your time is far better utilized. If you read a good book while you travel in a train, you can use that time far better. Time is limited, and you can do only a limited number of things in that time. But if you create systems that can work in parallel, then you can make the best use of your time.Idea: Automate. Nothing comes close to this in the practical world. If something can be done automatically, by employing a computer, one can not only be orders of magnitude faster, but far more accurate. In addition, computers have no limitations, and they can work 24x7. Same way robots can work on electric power, and can be orders of magnitude better.Practical application: One can automate just about anything, and there are some really good questions answered on Quora on this. Why is it not obvious? This is actually obvious, but most people lack the skill to do this. Learning programming takes some time, but once someone has the knowledge, they can do this and build their way upward. How to actually think about it? The way to think about this and make your way upward is to begin working with someone who actually has the skills to do this. Then bit by bit, learn the skills yourself, so that you need less and less assistance. Spend just a little money on some robots, so that some of your tasks are done automatically. Think about it this way - if you are spending a 100 dollars on a machine that makes a coffee with 10 minutes of efforts, vs, 500 dollars on a machine that takes a minute of efforts, then in its lifetime of 3000 days of usage, the one with 500 dollar tag would have saved you 450 hours.Idea: Before you make something faster, make it better. This applies to all the skills in the world. Whether it is computer programming, music, arts, engineering, medicine or just any other field. There is a very high demand for good people, and lower demand for someone not so good. Therefore before you make something faster, make it better.Below is an image of Samsung Phone. I always bought an iPhone, but now that Samsung had this battery blowing up problem, I don’t want to buy a Samsung.Practical application: This applies just about everywhere. Products, services, arts, movies - everywhere. Why is it not obvious? this is obvious to a lot of people, but they sometimes want to focus on output because it is tempting. Think about someone wanting to get more views on Quora. They would think that they would write ten answers and automatically they would get more views. But the world doesn’t work that way. The way world works is that it demands quality. As soon as you write one great answer, the number of views on your answer are in thousands, not in hundreds. Now you are beating someone writing 10s of poor answers by a significant margin. Same way, products and services offered in the world work in the same way. Make one great product, and then scale it.How to actually think about it? Focus on quality, and not on output. This path looks harder in the beginning, but much more rewarding as you continue walking this.Idea: Start, and just do it. I love Nike and all its products, partly also because of its slogan. A lot of people don’t begin on a solution or practical application for a very long time despite the fact that a solution may be needed.Just “starting” makes a significant progress on a project, because then bit by bit one can keep progressing.Practical application: If you come up with a new idea, don’t say no, just go. Some of the best people in the world do not lose any time to begin. They begin as quickly as they can, and keep going until a project finishes. This helps them achieve far bigger success. Why is it not obvious? This is obvious, but procrastination comes in between. I would like to inspire the readers about how procrastination works, and then come up with ways to eliminate it. Smart work involves starting quickly than to lose time. How to actually think about it?Is there a difference between ripping off and inventing? Not when by ripping it off you make it practical, and for all practical persons, Steve Jobs effectively invented the first modern computer mouse in the mid-70s… by stealing it from Xerox. In the latest episode of NPR’s All Things Considererd, Malcolm Gladwell tells the story about how Steve Jobs first brought the mouse to Apple. It’s a fantastic look inside Steve’s brain, and how he can reduce a complicated concept down to its essence for mass consumption.According to Gladwell, when Steve Jobs visited Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center in the late 1970’s, he was amazed by what he saw: a demonstration of a new three-button computer mouse. The only problem? It cost $300. Realizing that this would be the perfect interface innovation for his Apple Computer, Jobs took the concept to industrial designer Dean Hovey, who “improved” the mouse by dropping two of its buttons and, along with them, the mouse’s build price, which sank to just $15.Now the first time Steve Jobs figured out that he had to build a mouse, he ran to his labs, and asked the guy ~ drop everything, and start working on a mouse.Idea: Choose something with a large impact. One can hear this in many of the Google speeches. You can get the same theme in any of Elon Musk’s speeches as well. He is going after building rockets that can go to Mars, and developing systems that would enable this. The idea is just practically too large, but bit by bit as they are moving, they are progressing on this concept, and one day they will reach Mars.Practical application: Too many practical applications exist, but the most important thing to realize is that first of all there is very little competition where the ideas are too large. Most of the people in the world do not want to take up larger undertakings. Smartness is actually in making big ideas work. Why is it not obvious? It is not obvious because big ideas are not just coming to anyone and everyone all the time. One has to have insight, vision, knowledge, and a deep enough thinking approach towards identifying problems that solve things for a large population. How to actually think about it? For all practical purposes, try to see how many people will be impacted by the decisions you make, and the actions you take. If the number seems to be large, then there is a really good return on investment. Apply your work on such solutions.Idea: Contain failure by containing revert time. Often times, you would have to implement a solution, or a new project, where there would be no data at hand whether it would succeed or fail. A good approach in this case is to minimize the revert time. This way, even if you were to fail, you have contained the probability of failure.Practical application: This is all taught in risk management, and a wide variety of application exist. By managing the risk correctly, one can take large undertakings very easily. My formula is simply this -PSuccess x I success x CT / 2 - PFailure x IFailure x RT.WherePSuccess = Probability of success.ISuccess = Impact of success.CT = Competitor time.PFailure = Probability of failure.IFailure = Impact of failureRT = Revert Time. Why is it not obvious? This is not obvious because we do not see the failures equally negatively as we see the successes positively. We are far more likely to cry when we fail than to rejoice when we succeed. How to actually think about it? To focus on maximizing probability of success, work on scientific aspects that actually maximize success. To maximize impact, think about great ideas, and to reduce failures, focus on the revert time.Idea: Use probability theory. This comes really handy when a root cause cannot be found, and cannot be fixed. What you can make possible is to reduce the probability of errors so low, that the solution practically looks robust. It is fragile, but it is only less fragile. What would hard work look like? It would look like someone trying to fix a root cause that is not even identified. What would smart work look like? It would look like someone working on reducing the probability of fail rate.Practical application: This applies to all the systems which have defects of one or the other kind. You can sometimes not eliminate the defects. You can sometimes not detect them, but you should be able to reduce the probability of their leaking through the system. Think about a company whose job is to pack eggs in packets of 18. They employ machines to do this. Eggs are packed well, but every now and then, there is a cracked egg somewhere in the system. This may not exactly be due to a defect in the egg packing machine, but perhaps just because of an ill formed egg. What is possible is to check the boxes at random to see if there are any broken eggs. By checking, one will reduce the probability of ‘broken eggs in the packet shipped out’ problem. Millions of applications exist. Why is it not obvious? This is sometimes not obvious, because someone would somewhere go after solving this problem and would take up a wrong path. They would then carry out an enormous amount of research and try to identify the root cause. Sometimes there exists no root cause, sometimes it is just not possible to detect it, and sometimes even if you can identify it, you cannot really fix it.How to actually think about it?Lets imagine there is a fail rate of 1 in a 100. Reducing the probability of failure by a factor of 99% will now reduce the fail rate to ~ 1 in a 10,000. Reducing it further down by a factor of 10 will make it look like 1 in a 100,000. This is good enough for the practical applications, and one should settle down. Incremental efforts put on this problem will only bring marginal gains.Idea: Focus on the impact, not the actual work. Sometimes in engineering world, there are a lot of ways to solve a problem. Many of the ways are good methods, but one of them has the the elegance of simplicity, robustness, scale, usability, quality, and output. Choose the path that meets with the most qualities, and use that path most of the time. Do not let other paths become the standard processes.Practical application: Take a look at these two images. In the one above, it is hard work. In the one below, it is somewhat smarter. Sure, they should attempt installing a pump, but they are getting there. Why is it not obvious? Often people begin following their bosses. Bosses often lack practical hands-on knowledge. They may have worked on similar technologies, but with technologies evolving, the best known solutions change, and it is apparent that one should use a smarter idea, not an idea that comes from hierarchy. Sometimes people are fearful, that their ideas will not be taken into consideration, and sometimes they are fearful that their ideas might fail. How to actually think about it?There is no harm in failing. The harm is in not trying. If you do not try a new method out, you would never know it is a better method. If you actually try, and if happens to be a better method, you already have a winning formula. Now you only have to repeat it too many times to get the gain out of it, until you can come up with an even better solution.Stay blessed, and stay inspired! The small section about Steve Jobs came verbatim from the following source: How Steve Jobs Invented The Computer Mouse By Stealing It From Xerox | Cult of Mac.
