Warren Buffet got rejected from Harward Business School interview which lasted nearly 10 minutes.Later that summer, when he was searching for admissions, he came across the names of two eminent professors at the Columbia University, namely Benjamin Graham and David Dodd. He had read their book titled ‘Security analysis’ during his childhood.He immediately wrote a letter to them stating that “Dear professors, I thought you guys were dead’! But now that I found out that you are alive and teaching at Columbia, I would really like to come”.He got admitted to the institute!What did he do?He asked!In a Ted talk titled ‘What I learned from 100 days of rejection’ by Jia Jiang, he adventures boldly into a territory so many of us fear: rejection. By seeking out rejection for 100 days, from asking a stranger to borrow $100 to requesting a "burger refill" at a restaurant, Jiang desensitised himself to the pain and shame that rejection often brings and, in the process, discovered that simply asking for what you want can open up possibilities where you expect to find dead ends.On day 3 of the experiment, Jiang decided to ask for Olympic symbol Doughnuts at a cafe!To his surprise, the Doughnut maker took him so seriously! She started making charts, plans, seeking suggestions, and finally, after 15 minutes, she came up with this;Not only that she even said that the Doughnut is on her!That video got 5.7 million views on youtube as on today!How did he do that? I know it is rude to ask him to show his salary slip or a copy of his bank pass book pages recording the credit of the salary amount.Have an elderly relative ask casually if the salary includes the value of perquisites or not, if it is gross or net or pre tax or post tax. Pretend that you have assumed that it is his net salary and ask casually what the approximate CTC is. A skilful relative will be able to make it look like he is wanting to know what the company pays in general for people wanting to join that company and citing some fictitious ward of a a friend or relative who was trying to decide whether or not to join the same company.Ask friends or acquaintances/ contacts who are in similar companies about the credibility of the figure he or his parents have quoted.If you inquire officially with the HR department, they may not reply. They are bound by confidentiality rules. They can at most certify that he is working there but will not disclose the salary.If the matter is really important, then, throw diplomacy or tact to the winds.Just produce a file containing your own records, both education and employment experience and salary income and offer it to him for his perusal and say you would like him also to do the same to you. Producing your own records first, lessens the blow. Including a page right on top that shows your horoscope chart cushions the blow even more. Never mind if you don’t believe in horoscopes. This file and a request for a similar file will send the message better than a blunt message. Rather than asking for a single page of information which is of most interest, you ask for a set of documents, in which you include proof of salary.Be prepared to risk the alliance falling through. If it does so solely because of this, then do not grieve. Consider it as an admission of guilt and as a case of good riddance.The last desperate and expensive alternative is to contact a Detective Agency. If they can’t find out, nobody can.GV
