And this is if we even bother to differentiate bastard swords from longswords at all.Now that we sort of have an idea of what a bastard sword is, we must next tackle the question of “better at what and in what context?”You see, if you’re fighting on foot, wearing mail, and carrying a shield an arming sword is objectively better. Sword and board is a very well understood weapon system, and there’s really no reason to compromise the efficiency of the arming sword in this scenario for the odd chance you may want to put both hands on it.On the other hand, if you’re fighting in plate harness, then the bastard sword is objectively better. Your armor is good enough that you don’t need a shield, and in such cases it is better to put both hands on your sword for the added strength, control, speed, and leverage two-handed use entails, even if there is no reach advantage.If you are fighting on horse the bastard sword is probably better, even if of identical blade length, because you can slide your hand to the pommel and coax a bit more reach out of it.But what about edge cases? Our classic adventurer, who may find himself fighting in and out of armor in a dungeon or in town, and only so wealthy as to afford one sword? In a dungeon he will fight in armor with his shield, but in town he will shed both and have only his sword. I think then it depends on just how dangerous the dungeon and town are. If town is around as dangerous as the dungeon, then I’d suggest the bastard sword. He’s as like to need it in town, and putting two hands on it is damn useful if he’s got no armor for defense. That extra leverage will be useful in the bind. If town is far less dangerous, then I’d suggest the arming sword. He’ll mostly be using it with his shield in the dungeon and only needs it for incidental fighting in town, so it’d be best not to compromise it’s primary usage.Now if you know you’re going to be fighting with only one hand on the sword, it’s best to use a one-handed sword. After all, they’re optimized for it. But if the handle is long enough to get two hands on it, even if just barely, from a purely mechanical sword-usage perspective (ie ignoring armor and shields) it’s more efficient to put both hands on it.Original question-Between an arming sword and a bastard sword, which is better?
