What are some physical signs of Global warming?
Obvious evidences include increased atmospheric and ocean surface temperatures. Other evidences are shrinking glaciers, polar ice caps, and the Artic sea ice. Glaciers are among the most reliable indicators of global warming. Using Earth Observing satellites, scientists have been monitoring glaciers and have concluded that glaciers around the world are shrinking. For example, more than 110 glaciers have disappeared from Montana’s Glacier National Park over the past 150 years. Based on observations and simulations, scientists have predicted that the Glacier National Park will be glacier free by 2030.The polar ice sheets are massive glaciers. The Antarctic Ice Sheet extends almost 14 million square kilometers (5.4 million square miles), roughly the area of the contiguous US and Mexico combined. The Antarctic Ice Sheet contains 30 million cubic kilometers (7.2 million cubic miles) of ice. The Greenland Ice Sheet extends about 1.7 million square kilometers (656,000 square miles), covering most of the island of Greenland, three times the size of Texas.According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), the Greenland Ice Sheet has begun to decline. Most of Antarctica has yet to see dramatic warming. However, the Antarctic Peninsula, which juts out into warmer waters north of Antarctica, has warmed 2.5 C since 1950. A large area of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is losing mass, probably because of warmer water deep in the ocean. In East Antarctica, no clear trend has emerged. The figure below, from NSIDC, shows Greenland melt extent in 2017 compared to the 1981-2010 median.Another global-warming evidence is shrinking Artic sea ice. The figure below, from NSIDC, shows a rate of decline of 13.2% per decade (or 33,200 square miles per year) for the September sea ice extent between 1979 and 2017.
How many months of practice is required to climb the Mount Everest?
I went to Everest twice, in 2008 and 2010. I was fortunate enough to summit on May 28th, 2010. So . . . I had to train for the mountain twice. It is difficult, and requires a -lot- of self-discipline.In general, it takes people — at least those I think that train properly for it - between 9–15 months of steadily increasing workouts. Everest is both a physical and mental challenge, and people often greatly underestimate the -mental- training you need to do in order to keep your self going when all your body is telling you to do is stop, give up, and go down. Grinding out tough physical workouts, six times a week, for hours and hours on end, is great mental preparation for what you will be confronted with.Physically, yes, you need to be in the best shape of your life. You need your body in a position to extract all you can out of what you eat, climb ladders with a pack on with ease, and build up your fat and muscle reserves for the Death Zone. I lost about 25–30 pounds on my successful ascent, and was warned that you have to get to Everest “heavy” because you physically cannot eat enough when you are on the mountain to maintain your weight. You waste away, especially in the death zone, so you actually do not -want- to show up at base camp of Everest completely lean. You will have no reserves because by the time you get to Camp Two or so, pretty much all of your spare fat has been burned off. We were burning maybe 8–12,000 calories a day on a heavy climb day (like when you go from Base Camp to Camp Two all in one day . . . that is a very, very taxing day).To train for my second attempt, when I knew even more after my first attempt, I started my “Everest training” about 15 months before the climb. It involved running — steadily going from 3 miles to 6–10 by the end a few times a week. I trained on weights 3–4 times per week including extensive free weight use, and various machines to build up every muscle group you can. You use them all on Everest. Aerobically, did a lot of treadmill, elliptical work (to save my knees), and worst but best of all, going on a stairmaster with a 50 pound pack and 6-pound ankle weights (each) to simulate the weight of my boots. Imagine doing that at increasing intensity for not 10–15 minutes, but for 1–2 hours at a stretch. It is grueling. And I did it (a workout of some kind, alternating between aerobics and weight training) for 6 days a week - no exceptions. Even if I had to work late, I’d go to a 24-hour gym at midnight to knock out the workout on my training sheet.Slowly, steadily, your body leans out, toughens up, and you start building up the muscle mass you will actually burn off above 20,000 feet. The last 2–3 months, you have your most intense workouts but are also eating a ton because you don’t want to -lose- weight, you are actually trying to -increase- it. So it was bizarre to have a 3–4 hour workout, go home, and then eat a huge dinner with lots of protein and starches, followed by a big dessert. I am six feet tall and left for Everest at about 190 pounds, and came back just a bit above 160 pounds - my clothes were almost falling off me.But you know? It was worth it. Even doing it twice. And for those thinking about climbing Everest, this is what it takes to go there strong and increase your odds of actually making the summit. Success in climbing any big mountain, I think, is directly related to how much time you put into the mind-numbing grind of working out, and working out -hard-. No shortcuts.
